The way I interpreted that analogy when I read it is that a new and glorious age has dawned and that things are great and they are just going to get better. In the case of the book, it is neurogastroenterology research that is being discussed. In the case of the ad, it is the economy and social structure of a nation. I think.
In any case, that was the most interesting preface to a book that I've read in a long time.
