[Prompt]

The door fell closed behind her, the light fading from her vision, and she spotted the door at the other end of the walkway, tall and wooden with iron cast fixings. She saw it and she knew-she knew that was her way out. She knew it when she felt the hope flare in the pit of her stomach.

She was tired and she didn’t know why, but that wasn’t going to change anything. She was running, her feet pounding against the stone floor, legs aching and her arms screaming for her to stop, but she couldn’t. She was so close to freedom and fresh air and happiness and life and she couldn’t stop now. She needed to get to the end. There was no stopping her. Not now.

Her lungs screamed, begging for relief, and her feet cried out in pain against the pavement but she wasn’t relenting. She was going to get out of here, go home, live her life the way it was supposed to be lived, not let these things torture her spirit any longer. She was done, and she wanted to get out more than anything.

Her hand closed around the iron handle, and she couldn’t surpress the smile, the relief, that was now coursing through her system, and she let her fingers close around it, pulling back with all the power she had, everything she possessed, and launched herself into the light of the outside world, letting it engulf her and take her home.

The door fell closed behind her, the light fading from her vision, and she spotted the door at the other end of the walkway, tall and wooden with cast iron fixings. She had no recollection of where she had come from or where she was going, but she knew that that was her way out. She wanted it more than anything, to feel the heat of the sun on her skin and the wind blowing off the water, or anything that was remotely human and resilient. She wanted more than anything to feel human again, and her humanity rested behind that door.

So she was running.

She was running as fast as she could, running on nothing but adrenaline and hope, and hoping it would be enough to get her to the door without her collapsing on the way there. She needed to get there, and she needed to get there now, before it was too late, and she couldn’t do anything more for herself. She needed to get there before she stumbled and fell, and wasn’t able to get up again.

She needed to get there before she had no fight left.

She needed to get there before they found out what she was trying to do and dragged her back to the pit where she belonged.

Her hand closed around the handle, pulling it back harder than she had anticipated and stumbled back slightly, but not far enough to keep her from running into the light, unable to fight the smile that was launching itself across her features.

The door fell closed behind her, the light fading from her vision, and she spotted the door at the other end of the walkway, tall and wooden with cast iron fixings. She had no recollection of where she had come from or where she was going, but she knew that that was her way out. Her body ached, and she stumbled forward, wanting to move forward, needing to move forward, because she needed to get out of here.

If it was the last thing she did, she needed to be free.

Her legs felt like jelly, but she pushed herself forward, not running just moving, keeping her body from falling apart. She needed to, was determined to not let herself fall. She’d come so far, and she wasn’t going to let them get the best of her. Not this time. She was going to win. She had to. She didn’t have a choice.

Her hand closed around the handle, and she pulled with everything she had, needing to feel the sun, feel the heat of the daylight surround her, and she launched herself out and into the world. She collapsed forward, knowing that so long as she landed on solid ground and not the stones of the world behind her.

However, her feet weren’t there to support her, and all she could do was keep her body pitching forward, her body striking the stones. She felt the pain course through her and hit the every nerve and sensor in her body, and while she tried to push herself up, she just couldn’t do it any more.

She could feel herself breaking, and there was nothing she could do to stop it.
