So about a week ago, Eirik started rating his music and decided to have a top 20. In the end, he was more discriminatory than he intended and ended up with a top 17. As he was compiling his music, he told me that he wanted to see what my top 20 were. As he was asking for me to do this, I knew that this would be a hard task. I could easily give you a top 20, hell, even a top 10 of my romantic songs, or depressing songs, or heart-felt songs, or 90's sonogs, but OF ALL TIME?! This was going to be rough, but I decided to step up to the challenge.
I started the same way he did, rating my music on iTunes. This was kind of easy...until I realized that I ended up with 100+ songs with 5 stars. I dragged a select few of these songs into a play list that I called "My top 20". Not any song was going to make it into my first draft of top 20. These songs had to include the following qualities:
1. The song had to have lyrics I could sing along to. I didn't necessarily have to have the lyrics memorized, but they had to be catchy. Catchy songs tend to be good, and if they get me to sing along, then I know they're good.
2. Only one of the songs in my top 20 doesn't have lyrics, but the lyrics in the songs had to be good. I had to like the message in the song and the song had to be well-written.
3. The song had to have a strong memory attached to it. As I listen to songs, I can usually think back to a time when I first heard it, what i was going through when I heard it or decided to like it, or the song gives me a feeling of remembering listening to this song often.
You'd think that after going through these conditions that I'd have it narrowed down close to 20. I ended up with about 50. Condensing it to 30 was easy...but I felt done at 30. Deleting any more songs would feel like deleting a memory. Kind of like in Eternal Sunshine except ALL the memories were good.
After a few days of listening to these 30 songs, I slowly started deleting a few here and there, and I finally ended up with 20. And without any further adue, here are my top 20 songs of all time... (in alphabetical order).
