In the last 48 hours I've more then likely spent about 20-25 hours playing video games and I'm waiting for my guilty catholic conscious to bitch about it. I feel as though I just stole a slice of warm delicious pie from an old ladies window, then was caught and let in to feed at her dinner table while she tells me nostalgic stories of her past. It's been a comforting experience.
Like a young Aladdin justifying his theft out of necessity, I can't help but believe this sort of experience is almost owed to me. School and work for an entire semester has starved me of my gaming habits leaving me to game roughly 8-12 hours a week instead of my old high school habits of 40-50. It felt warm inside that house, and for the sake of portal, the cake, not the pie was quite delicious.
So let me describe to you this moist and multi dimensional cake.
The top of the cake was covered in geometric figures, that one could argue, looked to be at war. The kind lady; what was her name again? Ah yes, Mrs. Elite. The first slice that she offered me had the strongest looking geometric ship, which i believe had a score of 2 million, 240 thousand, or some such, the number became meaningless after which all achievements had been unlocked and 2 million broken. Needless to say, it was edible and flavorful.
Under the delectable ship was the basic frosting that to be honest originally disappointed me at first sight. It appeared to be your ordinary white sugar frosting, with a plan boring outer appearance. Mrs. Elite called it her Lumines Live coating, a different variation from her hand held offerings. I've never tried the PSP version of Lumines, so I'm not really sure how it works, is it really just a series of menus? Mrs.Elite could not comment. I don't really know what I expected when I downloaded it, but I expected a main kind of game like what Poke'mon Puzzel League or Tetris Worlds have. In any case, while Lumines on the 360 may have originally disappointed me, the main game is genuinely fun and unique. The harder achievements being hard enough that it'll take me awhile to get, but achievable enough that I'll keep coming back to try and achieve them.
After the delightful frosting that Mrs. Elite made herself she thought it necessary to apologize for the top layer of her cake, saying something about it not belonging to her, and it's existence in her cake a strange kind of mystery. Why she would apologize I do not know. The top of her cake was infused with the greatness of Zack and Wiki which is filled with unique innovation. I actually finished the game recently and enjoyed about 95% of it. I argue that two parts in the last two missions are extremely annoying in that they make you solve puzzels in ways that you hadn't done in the rest of the game. Introducing new gameplay mechanics and vocabulary in levels where you're supposed to use things you've already learned is really annoying in that you're trying to remember what you learn and trying to apply that knowledge only to discover that you're stuck because the game is still adding new stuff. Which is cool, but seems fruitless for it's final missions. Anyway I had a blast with all it's twisting and pulling wiimote gestures that truly made it a exclusive Wii experience.
Under Zack of Wiki lied more of Mrs. Elite's Frosting which I don't think I need to comment on because its quite popular and known across the land. Portal. I had already beaten it so I spent some time in the last 36 hours beating the advance maps and trying to acquire some speed medals, but I'm pretty sure anything above silver is fucking impossible. Then again my FPS experience is quite minimal.
The center layer of this cake was tasty, but in a shameful way. I wasn't sure if I should enjoy it, I looked to Mrs. Elite and she only murmured something about it “not belonging” and that these “mysteries are something else.” How do these things keep ending up in her cake? Anyway, the game play in this layer seemed contrived and the story convoluted. Something about Lost Jerusalem, god, space, mechs, testaments and robots designed to look like either A) little girls or B) voluptuous women. It's certainly an acquired taste. Personally I like the skill system, that has you acquire skill points from battles to learn new skills or traits or bonus stats, mean while the game forces characters to acquire specific skills by forcing certain characters to learn certain spells at certain levels. So while you may teach your healer attack moves and raise her attack, the main game will probably focus on her magic and MP with her level ups. Those same level ups will probably also teach her essential cure spells or attack spells. So each character stays assigned a certain “class” so as a player you're really choosing the idea of making character X focused or Character X balanced. Seeing as how the game has no PVP, the player can't really go wrong in either choice leaving the options less stressful then something like Digital Devil Saga or (might i say) Poke'mon. If you hadn't guessed that layer was made up of XenoSaga 3
As I've said this cake is multi-dimensional. Following XenoSaga 3 was Mrs.Elites super exciting frosting that she made out of some imported products. It was actually very good and familiar. I've completed it a number of times, but now I get to complete it with achievements. Castlevania Symphony of the Night, is still the best Castlevania game and everybody still needs to play it.
Finally but not least is the bottom layer of Half-Life which I felt I should play because the Orange box is 3 parts Half Life 2. So I actually Gasp! Started playing a PC game, it felt awkward at first, but I've gotten used to it and I'd say that yeah, I actually enjoy it. A PC game and a FPS, wtf!? This is going to be a great year and it was a great way to finish up my cake. Story wise it's left me un-impressed from what I expected, but I'm hoping Half Life 2 will make up for that.
And with that I'll have to finish sharing my experience because I have to leave for work because in the next 30 hours I will have to spend 18 of them working or traveling to work! Not to mention another 7 to sleep. Ugh!
I figured that would be a more enjoyable read then saying I played:
-Geometry Wars
-Lumines Live
-Finished Zack and Wiki
-Portal some more
-CV:SotN
-Half Life
-XenoSaga 3
Yeah I've been pretty obscene lately.
