CHAPTER NINE
It was funny, actually. At least in his head it was. Jung Yunho was nothing like he’d imagined, yet everything all at once. He’d expected the long legs and imposing height. The broad shoulders and slightly superior set of his jaws were no surprise either. There was an unmistakable air of refined masculinity about him; Jaejoong wasn’t the least bit disappointed. He was, however, intrigued by what he didn’t imagine, what he hadn’t expected: the luxurious shoulder length hair that was nearly identical to Yoochun’s except it was shorter and manlier somehow. The bowed mouth with a full lower lip that was just itching for Jaejoong to nibble between his teeth was highly fascinating too. It was the only remotely feminine aspect of his face, yet oddly fitting, Jaejoong decided. It offset the torrent of masculinity that seemed to ooze off him in waves.
Except those eyes.
They were neither masculine or feminine, nor were they arrogant and imposing. They were a vast, open space coated in liquid chocolate. If eyes were the window to a man’s soul, then Jaejoong could see right through Jung Yunho. Expressions, thoughts, fleeting sparks of something flitted behind brown orbs and Jaejoong thought that, given time, he’d like to be able to read every single one of them.
The question was, how much time did he have?
The taller man paused in his exit of the elevator, as Jaejoong had known he would. He didn’t want to sound cocky or conceited, but he fancied himself unforgettable. Jung Yunho was doing a good job of cementing the idea, surprise and recollection settling themselves in his eyes and face. And Jaejoong had to wonder. How was it that this man could be a lauded, in-demand attorney with a reputation for being stoic and pokerfaced when on the job (because yes, Jaejoong couldn’t resist and had done his homework) reveal everything through those eyes? Jaejoong liked to think he was good at reading people. Then again, maybe he was just seeing what he wanted to see. He’d been known to lie to himself on more than one occasion.
The surprise and recollection weren’t only on his face. They were in his voice too.
“Kim Jaejoong?” Ahh…that voice. He’d expected that too. Had spent many a countless night imagining what it would sound like without a myriad of lines and circuits separating them on the phone. So far, Jaejoong conceded, anything about Jung Yunho had yet to disappoint him. His voice was smooth and low, not quite the silken rumble that Yoochun’s could fall into when he put his mind to it, but like heated stone. It could burn you or soothe you, and Jaejoong didn’t know which he preferred. He decided he didn’t need to decide right now.
“You can call me Hero,” Jaejoong said, reluctant to give his business name when only thoughts of getting intimate with Jung Yunho clouded his mind. But this was neither the time or place for such thoughts. He was here on Yoochun’s account and for once in his life he could truly say he disliked his dongsaeng with a passion. Yoochun was, figuratively, the only obstacle between him and the refreshingly handsome challenge standing momentarily bewildered in front of him.
It happened quickly. Yunho was suddenly snapped out of his trance and then-ah…well, there it was. That courtroom face. It wasn’t so much that his expression changed-more like he ceased to have one at all. His eyes shut down, his features hadn’t moved, not a muscle had twitched, but Jaejoong could no longer tell what went on beyond those now-glassy orbs. He was a little put off by being shut out, even if the other man had ample reason to.
Yunho cleared his throat to give himself time to think. He hadn’t expected Kim Jaejoong-or was it Hero now?-at all. Nor did he expect to meet him so soon. Yunho was used to being given a certain amount of time to examine and analyze information, and though he’d already picked apart their phone conversation and constructed a mental character profile of Kim Jaejoong, nothing could have prepared him for the real thing.
“I’m-”
“I know who you are.” Jaejoong interjected with a tiny smile and a slight tilt of his head. The result was an exquisite inquisitive gaze that was too sharp for Yunho’s comfort. “Jung Yunho: Yunho to friends, U-know to the rest of the world. Age twenty-four, the first born son and the second Jung in Jung & Jung, Attorneys At Law. Shall I go on?”
“Impressive,” Yunho nodded, finally finding his voice. “And it’s U-know to you. You seem to know a lot about me.”
“Not at all,” Jaejoong replied, refusing to acknowledge the slight sting of rebuke. “You’d be surprised at the amount of information you can find on the web with the help of someone internet savvy.”
“It’s not surprising actually,” Yunho returned with a smile to match the alluring one on Jaejoong’s face. “Kim Jaejoong: Jaejoong to friends, Hero to the rest of the world. Age twenty-four, the last child out of eight and the only boy. Shall I go on?”
Jaejoong couldn’t fight the grin that spread unbidden across his features, reaching his eyes to make genuine amusement plain on his face. It transformed his countenance from someone seemingly unapproachable into someone highly amiable. Yunho didn’t think he liked this face any better than the slightly cold demeanor of moments ago. The non-hostile expression was making it harder for him to concentrate, and Yunho didn’t appreciate the distraction.
“Touché.” Before Jaejoong could say more, they were joined by two others.
“Yunho hyung,” a stoic looking young man called out. He emerged from the inner office, followed by Yoochun, who wore an outwardly composed expression. But Jaejoong knew that face. A brow was slightly cocked and one corner of his mouth was quirked almost imperceptibly. And Jaejoong knew that face.
It was triumphant and more than a little smug.
Kim Junsu had been the biggest hurdle. But if Jaejoong was sure in his assumption-and Jaejoong was rarely wrong. He had an uncanny sixth-sense when it came to these things-then Jung Yunho would also be a hurdle. A different kind of handsome and probably not as big a hurdle as Kim Junsu, but a hurdle nonetheless. Now, if only Jung Yunho would comply.
“You’re here,” Junsu directed at the new arrival. He found it a little odd that his hyung was conversing with the enemy’s friends so easily. He figured it was due to lack of recognition that Yunho hadn’t already hapkido’d anyone down the elevator. “And you must be…?” he looked expectantly at Jaejoong who didn’t look the least bit surprised to be addressed.
“Hero.” Jaejoong offered, extending a hand. They shook hands, any semblance of a smile or welcome devoid on Junsu’s face, even as a round of introductions ensued. “I assume we’ll be having dinner?” Jaejoong slid a glance in Yoochun’s direction, knowing the answer even before the other man answered. There were no bloody knuckles and telling bruises; he knew they were lucky not to have been involved in an all out brawl-which, really, with Yoochun’s half-assed plans, were never too far in the horizon-and thrown out.
Jaejoong caught the tail end of a silent conversation between the two other men, not unlike the one he’d had with Yoochun moments ago. Junsu nodded in grim acquiesce, to which all Yunho could do was follow. He’d encouraged Junsu to take this course of action, the thought of pointless court appearances because of irreconcilable differences enough to make him inwardly cringe. There were so many other things he could be doing. Besides, he thought, a sweeping gaze taking in Jaejoong’s handsome, suit-clad form. The evening was looking decidedly better.
--
Right. This, he mentally pointed to the determined woman striding towards a nondescript door off the side of the lobby-this is not good. It was safe to say that Changmin had not planned to meet anyone he was even remotely acquainted with at Kim Corporations’ main offices. First of all, he was too loyal to his own company-even if he liked to rub it in Yoochun hyung’s face that he could work anywhere he wanted at the drop of a hat-to ever associate with the corporation. Second, he didn’t get out much anyway, and the only acquaintances he ever acquired were the ones he met at business functions-and those people remained acquaintances because at the end of the night, even after a couple of shots of hard liquor, they were still not worth more than a minute of his time. And third, Yoochun would call him mean and coldhearted-which really wasn’t that bad anyway, since Changmin was vaguely aware that there was some truth in the accusations-and then whine about it. Changmin didn’t know how a twenty-something adult and boasted himself a man, could whine so frequently and so incessantly without losing his dignity and self-respect. He thought he’d already resigned himself to the fact that Yoochun hyung was shameless, but really. When the man started to whine, Changmin had to wonder where the older man’s pride was going-or if he had had any to begin with.
So, what was Park Hyebin-or was it Kim Hyebin now?-doing here?
“Noona, wait!” He called out as the older woman reached the door. He was so surprised to see that it opened up to be an elevator instead that he almost didn’t notice the small woman at his elbow.
“Well, this is certainly awkward,” the woman said when she was finally acknowledged. She had a slight accent-Chinese maybe?-and Changmin could feel warmth seep into his cheeks for his rudeness. “I’m Jang Ri In. You probably weren’t expecting me. Or Hye Bin either, judging from your earlier reaction.”
“Yes, you’re right. I’m-”
“Changmin, I know.” Ri In smiled. “And in my defense, the only reason I know that is because Hye Bin practically yelled it out in a nearly empty and mostly silent lobby.” Changmin found himself smiling suddenly-which was really inappropriate considering the timing. “Wasn’t stalking you. Really. I don’t even know you.”
“No, I understand. I was just-”
“Yah! Hye Bin-sshi!” Ri In interrupted to call out to their mutual companion who was now stepping into the elevator without them. “Slow down! There are people following you!” Hye Bin reacted, seemingly hearing them for the first time. She held the elevator doors open until they reached the lift.
“I’m sorry, Ri In-sshi.” she apologized when they stepped through the doors. Then, to Changmin. “What are you doing here Changmin? Is oppa with you?”
Changmin nodded reluctantly. Hye Bin noona always had been a little scary-to him at least. Not that he would admit that to anyone. Most especially not right now: alone and in front of a virtual stranger whilst being enclosed in a dimunitive space that could or could not plummet them to their deaths, depending on Hye Bin’s mood. Which didn’t look too good right now, so no, no mention of her being scary. Even if her eyes were spitting fire and nearly burning holes through his ridiculously good looking, yet ridiculously overpriced three piece suit (which he’d only bought at the insistence of both his hyungs that he looked ridiculously good in it). Thankfully, he was saved by his new acquaintance.
“Hye Bin-sshi. If you glare any harder, you’re going to burn a hole through the poor boy’s clothes.”
Changmin bristled slightly at being called a boy-and a poor one at that. He was making nearly six figures, he could hardly be called a beggar-but decided that beggar’s couldn’t be choosers. The reprimand, though spoken lightly, had stopped the glaring.
“Who else is with you Changmin? I know it’s not just you two. Where there’s smoke, there’s got to be a fire. Is Jaejoong oppa here too?” Hye Bin visibly fumed when Changmin nodded. “Great. The whole gang’s here,” she said with more than a little sarcasm. “I’m so sorry Ri In-sshi. You could have just left. I know we were planning on dinner but…”
“Don’t worry about,” Ri In replied with a nonchalant wave of her hand. “I’m used to putting dinner on the back burner for work purposes. I can always coerce my mother into giving me free, heart-disease-inducing, but-oh-so-delicious food another day. Besides,” Ri In slid an intrigued glance in Changmin’s direction. “It looks like this place is more interesting anyway.”
Changmin had no time to ponder the meaning behind that look or those words before the elevator slowed and the doors were sliding open. At his initial, sweeping glance, he was a little surprised but somewhat relieved to find that there was no blood, no brawl, and no gore. He stepped out first, Yoochun hyung seeing him earliest. “Ah, maknae! You’re finally here,” the older man said with a grin. “I was beginning to wonder if I had to page the whole building to find you. I want you to meet Kim Junsu-”
He only spared a glance to the man standing impassively next to Yoochun. He kind of figured that was Kim Junsu anyway. There was another man however, with his back turned, and Changmin couldn’t help but feel a jolt of familiarity. The breadth of the shoulders, the ramrod line of the back, and the unmistakable way the obviously pricey suit embraced that powerful frame-Changmin would know that back anywhere.
No. Please, no. Please. It can’t be. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please not--
“-and his legal advisor, U-know. They’ll be joining us for dinner.”
U-know?
For a moment, Changmin was filled with a ridiculous amount of relief. It couldn’t possibly be! He was being ridiculous-which, he had to admit, happened quite a lot when he was with Jaejoong and Yoochun hyung. And then said man turned and Changmin was face to face with a man he swore he’d never lay eyes on again-even if it killed him.
Changmin figured that only the good died young.
He certainly hoped heaven was better than the hell he was facing-again.
A/N: Hello again!! I know I haven’t posted in a while, even if I posted pretty regularly in the beginning. Really sorry for that. My schedule’s not as congested as its been for the past few weeks, so hopefully I’ll be able to post consistently again =]]
So, in this chapter we discover some pretty interesting things =]] I kind of wrote this all in one go, and its kind of late right now, so there hasn’t been enough time for me to second guess my work and go all overly-critical on it. But I’m sure when after I post it and get a night’s sleep-no good in front of it because I just don’t sleep well these days-I’ll look at it tomorrow and be absolutely HORRIFIED. Not to worry though. That’s just my initial reaction to all my work.
Anyway, hopefully this chapter isn’t too bad. I actually know where it’s going and have been going through possible scenarios and probable endings during my short hiatus, so rest assured, I WILL finish this series =D
I also posted a knew fic a few days ago, so I’d really appreciate it if you’d all take a look at it =]] Updates for that will be slower, but I only plan for it to be a few chapters long-maybe four or five, including the epilogue-so it shouldn’t be too bad =]]
As always, thanks for reading! Comments are <3 and I promise to reply to them-as well as any older, unanswered ones-as soon as possible =D Bye bye!! *waves*
