Chapter Six

Heat, like sharp points, licked at his shoulders, the water searing from the showerhead serving to clear his befuddled thoughts. Sleep had become a foreign thing after Yoochun’s abrupt, late-night phone call. Tossing and turning in bed for nearly half an hour had left him frustrated-doubt and worry swirling at the forefront of his mind.

He hated it, that he couldn’t understand. That comprehension continued to elude him in his quest to aid his troubled dongsaeng. Yoochun was like a brother to him, the validity of flesh and blood irrelevant in the face of their intangible bond. Yoochun knew him as much as he knew himself, better even, and it was the same vice versa. They kept very little from each other, both privy to the other’s thoughts and musings. As of now, however, Jaejoong felt as if Yoochun was sand: rapidly slipping through his fingers. He couldn’t decipher the younger man anymore, could no longer predict his moves as if they were his own.

How had they come to this? Reduced to guessingly blindly instead of knowing with an eerie certainty without the use of words? It bothered him, grated on his conscience until it was almost a physical pain. Jaejoong had to know. To comfort. To understand. It was the only way he could deflect the attention from his own inner turmoil.

He shut the water off slowly, not wanting to stop the pleasure of the scorching of liquid heat but knowing it was time to get out. Jaejoong made quick work of toweling himself and once again donned his sleeping attire. However, he took one look at the tousled sheets of the bed and was immediately averse to idea of lying down once more. He would never be able to sleep, even if he tried.

Instead, he left his room, padding quietly to a familiar door down the hall. Turning the knob slowly, he poked his head through first, courteous even when he knew the room’s only occupant would be sound asleep. By the light of a decorated butterfly nightlight, Jaejoong was able to make out the tiny lump that was now his charge. He moved farther into the room, his already quiet steps muffled by the thick carpet. He sat in a rocking chair near the bed, content to settle there for the remainder of the night. He wouldn’t be able to sleep, but he’d be happy to keep watch.

--

“Hyung, you’re here again.”

It wasn’t a question, more of a statement and one that Changmin thought was worthy of being said. He paused from typing in marketing data on their new line of handheld electronics to catch Yoochun shrugging his shoulders, the gesture saying, I couldn’t help it. Changmin was happy for the intrusion however, the letters starting to blur in front of him from staring at the computer screen for too long. Not that he’d ever let the older man know that. Yoochun might actually start to think he was welcome there or something.

“What, come for another tête-à-tête?”

“Is that code for ‘blow job,’ because I’d love to. But sadly, Changmin-ah, not today.” For once, Yoochun surprised him by completely bypassing this supposedly ‘uncomfortable’ couch and sinking, instead, into the straight-backed chair directly in front of Changmin’s desk. The younger man raised an eyebrow at the surprising words and the equally surprising, subsequent actions. He didn’t think Yoochun had even noticed there was another chair in his office, never mind actually sitting on it.

“Well this is new.”

“Tell me about it,” Yoochun agreed. “I’m actually here on actual business instead of a random excuse to annoy you.”

“It’s things like that that make me wonder how you’ve kept this company alive with the minimum amount of work you put into it.”Changmin remarked, his words half true.

“I resent that,” Yoochun replied, trying to glare but ending up in a pout instead. “I work. You know…occasionally.”

“Right.” Changmin snorted derisively. “Sitting at your desk playing online games on your computer doesn’t count as work, hyung.”

“Oh, and sitting at your desk watching soft-core porn is?” He couldn’t resist the urge to roll his eyes at his dongsaeng. “Labeling a folder ‘Special Videos’ only makes people want to snoop around more. “

“This coming from the hyung who gave me the download sites in the first place.” Changmin glared, genuine irritation and not to mention a little embarrassment fueling the action. “Why were you on my computer anyway? That’s an invasion of privacy.”

“As the president of this company, I have the right to monitor what my employees are doing,” Yoochun replied. “For the most part, I only did it to annoy you. I just never thought I’d find something so interesting. But it’s not like you put much effort into hiding it. Honestly Minnie, ‘Special Videos’?” He sent Changmin a look that clearly said, what the f.uck? “If you really didn’t want anyone to see them, you could have at least come up with something more original.”

“Whatever,” Changmin huffed, a little too embarrassed to think up a suitable reply. “Why are you here again?”

“My, my, touchy aren’t we?” Yoochun threw him a knowing look, one that Changmin pointedly chose to ignore. He refused to be goaded onto the same level as his childish companion. “But you’re right,” Yoochun conceded. “Business is business and I can tease you another time about your choice of viewing pleasure.”

“Get to the point hyung.”

“God, what is it with people and getting to the point these days? Can’t a man participate in a little verbal repartee every now and then? All right, all right, I get it,” he added when Changmin sent him a withering look. Yoochun settled himself comfortably-or as comfortable as he could be-into the stiff chair, elbows propped on the armrests and fingers steeped to a point above his abdomen. “I’m going to have dinner tonight, with a few important guests. I was wondering if you’d like to join me.”

He shouldn’t have even had to ask. Changmin was sold the moment he’s said ‘dinner.’ But his interest was piqued at the mention of guests. Through Jaejoong hyung-who had called him earlier that day, complaining about Yoochun’s late night phone call and how he didn’t get any sleep because of it-and through the office grapevine, Changmin had a pretty good idea who the guests were. They would undoubtedly be Kim Junsu and his business associates.

“Dinner, as in food that you will be paying for?”

“Yes, Changmin-ah,” Yoochun answered with an unnecessary roll of his eyes.

“I’ll definitely be there.”

--

“Ri In, how’s she doing?” Junsu asked as he watched Hye Bin and another co-worker squeeze themselves into a small cubicle. Almost immediately, they were engrossed with what was being shown on the computer screen, the spark that had been missing in Hye Bin’s eyes since the wedding once again coming to light.

“She’s doing pretty well,” Ri In replied, also watching the pair, she and Junsu watching from the entrance. “Actually, more than well: she’s fantastic!”

“Really?” Junsu asked, a little surprised, but proud.

Ri In nodded. “She’s got a pretty good eye for advertisement. Knows exactly what’ll sell and what won’t. I thought she’d be a newbie, since she’s young and comes from a rich family and all, but I’ve got to say…she’s really impressive.”

“She did grow up in the business environment, so that’s not too big of a surprise. Still, it’s good to hear.” Junsu said, happy with her reply. He’d known Jang Ri In for a while now, and if there’s one thing he knew about her, it was that she was honest. They’d risen through the ranks of the company together, both starting out at the very bottom of the chain and working their way up. Even if Junsu had been the heir to the company, he’d been through every available position: from janitor to mail boy, from secretary to his current position as President. Ri In, being a regular intern-turned-employee had been alongside him and experienced the same training before completing it and becoming Kim Corporation’s Manager of Advertising. Through their shared hardships blossomed a dedicated friendship. “What are they doing now?”

“They’re looking at possible publicity procedures. Now that we’ve merged with Park Enterprises, we’re not just a hotel chain anymore, so we have to consider a lot of new advertising angles.”

“Isn’t that a little too much for her first day of work?” Junsu asked, concerned.

“Not at all,” Ri In replied. “Since she used to work at her family’s company, she’ll be able to provide good insight on their products, and like I said, she’s got a good eye for advertising. Combine those and we’ve got a solid marketing strategy.”

“As always Ri In, very well thought out.” Junsu complimented. “We could use someone like you on the Board.”

Ri In allowed herself a tiny smile and an eye roll, a small testament to their strong friendship, even with the gulf created by rank between them. “And you could use a break. This is what, the millionth time you’ve asked me? But my answer is still the same. I don’t want a promotion-I’m happy overseeing Advertising.”

“I wasn’t asking,” Junsu countered cheekily.

“That doesn’t mean you weren’t going to.”

Junsu shrugged nonchalantly and looked in Hye Bin’s direction, waving a little to catch her attention. She saw it, beamed at him, and returned the wave before once again becoming engrossed with the project in front of her.

“I’d ask you how was this past week of ‘marital bliss’, but seems like I’ve got my answer.”

“Huh?” Junsu said, his mind returning to Ri In’s now-contemplative expression.

“You don’t love her-that much is obvious-but you like her, so I guess that’s a start.”

“Yeah,” he murmured, a little uncomfortable with the sudden change of subject but knowing he’d have to satisfy his friend’s curiosity sometime. “We’ve all got to start somewhere, right?”

“That’s more like it,” Ri In responded, with a fond smile. “You’ve been down lately; I know the whole getting married thing wasn’t easy. I’m glad you’re being a little more optimistic.” She gave his forearm a reassuring squeeze, the gesture so quick he doubted anyone else would have noticed it. Nonetheless, it had been full of the encouragement he near-desperately needed. And for that, Junsu was thankful.

“I’m glad too.”

A/N: Hello! Chapter Six FINISHED! Sorry it’s a little late, school has kept me going insane the past week. The quarter’s ending and I’ve been bombarded with projects. Still, I took a break every now and then…the result is this chapter =]] I know some people were expecting the Yoosu, but I couldn’t do it! I wanted their meeting to be…BETTER. But with school being major hectic right now, I knew I wouldn’t be able to give their initial contact any justice. So the YooSu x JaeHoMin meeting will be put off until next week. For those of you who’ve read my first three One Shots, you’ll kind of guess who Jaejoong’s watching in the first half of the chapter. Also, those three one shots will shed a little light on what’ll be happening in Chapter Seven. I’m already planning it. I think it’s going to be pretty long. Of course, you don’t need to read the three one shots, but Chapter Seven will make a little more sense if you do. All three can be found on my Livejournal =]] anyway, thanks for reading =D

p.s., How do you like Ri In? is it obvious that I’m a SuYin fan? Before there was YooSu, for me there was SuYin =]]
