Chapter Fifteen
“Sir, Jaejoong-sshi just called to inform you that he’s scheduled for an executive meeting with Kim Corporations. It’s currently TBA, but he says he’s vying for the end of next week.” Yoochun’s secretary said as he walked into his office. She followed him into the room, organizer and stylus held in her hands.
“Yes, all right. Thank you, Mi Young. Is there anything else? I don’t want to be disturbed for the rest of the afternoon if necessary.” Yoochun shrugged out of his coat, thinking twice about taking off his jacket. The weather was getting colder.
“Of course, sir. Just one last thing,” she said, adjusting her prim and proper, black-rimmed glasses in a nervous gesture Yoochun was sure she wasn’t aware of. “Changmin-sshi sent a missive while you were out to lunch. He says to expect him at four o’clock.”
“Did he say what for?” he said, taking a seat behind his desk.
“No, sir, he didn’t specify.”
Yoochun paused to think, the absence of his usual flippant manner disconcerting. “Tell him to push it back till five and I’ll treat him to dinner. I want a reply immediately.”
“Yes, sir, I’m on it.”
“Good. Other than that, Mi Young, please direct redirect any calls or people to be dealt with tomorrow.”
“Yes, sir.” She exited the room quickly, most likely puzzled about his recently subdued behavior. He wouldn’t be surprised is his assumptions were correct; he knew he’d been more reticent lately, courtesy of one Shim Changmin. It came with things coming into perspective. Far from Jaejoong’s coddling and eagerly welcoming no-nonsense nature, yoochun had slowly, but surely come to terms with himself, and that meant rearranging his priorities.
First and foremost was, of course, the good of the company. Looking back, he was slightly disgusted with himself. While he didn’t regret his decisions, he certainly could have handled things better. Everything was more complicated than it had to be, and all because he couldn’t keep his foot out of his mouth and his head out of his ass. He was lucky Kim-no, just Junsu-hadn’t sued his ass.
Yoochun sat at his desk, completely unproductive for a long moment, contemplating his next plan of action. Now that he’d successfully prioritized his priorities, he had to think about making them happen. He had a clearer head now, any biases he might have had against Junsu tamed and pushed aside. The man was virtually faultless, pulled into all of this by the same people-their parents, or so they called themselves, meddling in their adult children’s lives to ensure continuous money and power for themselves.
He’d tried to make amends of course, and after having shared an amiable afternoon drinking coffee together, Yoochun thought things would progress smoothly. He wasn’t entirely wrong, though he wasn’t quite right either. Rather than progressing or digressing, things seemed to have come to a standstill. He hadn’t talked to the man since their afternoon coffee almost two months ago! Yoochun was sure Junsu’s secretary was already feeling harassed with his constant phone calls.
He was being avoided, obviously. Yoochun knew because Hye Bin rang him often and all but gushed about how wonderful and attentive and downright fantastic Junsu was. It seemed the other man had time to sit through hours of Hye Bin’s piano playing (and she played very well, so even in his head Yoochun didn’t think this was a point for himself) but couldn’t take a moment to answer his call.
Now normally, Yoochun hated to be avoided, but Kim Junsu had a plausible reason to avoid him so Yoochun couldn’t really fault him for that either. Except it’s been two months. And in that two months, Yoochun could proudly say he’d become a different person. For Junsu to continue avoiding him after a whole two months would be ridiculous.
So the question was…how to get his attention?
“Hyung!” Changmin declared as he barged unceremoniously into Yoochun’s office and successfully interrupted what could have been a moment of genius. “I have good news for you.”
Yoochun all but growled, contenting himself with an exasperated sigh instead. “What? What is it Changmin?”
“Well, somone’s in a mood.”
“Didn’t Mi Young tell you I didn’t want to be bothered? I said I’d meet you at five.”
“I couldn’t wait.” Changmin said, a flicker of something clouding over his eyes before it was gone in a heartbeat.
“What?” Changmin stopped in front of Yoochun’s desk and looked down at his hyung. His gaze was disconcerting, making Yoochun feels all sorts of uncomfortable.
“I talked to Jaejoong hyung this morning,” he said.
“You slept over again?” Yoochun asked, but not like he didn’t know the answer. Changmin had more lax hours than Jaejoong these days, especially since the transfer. He often stayed the night at the eldest’s house to baby sit, not minding the free food and lodging, made even better by his immense fondness for Jaejoong’s charge. Yoochun couldn’t help but feel a little guilty since it was his fault Jaejoong was transferred after all. Not to mention he hadn’t visited Ji Yool in weeks, despite claiming he was her favorite uncle.
Changmin nodded, flippantly waving it off as nothing much. “He’s getting blue prints of their hotels and scheduling an executive meeting.”
“I know. The meeting’s for next week and he said the blue prints would come around four. That’s why I wanted to meet you at five,” Yoochun explained, “so that you could take a look at them before talking to me, and then I could buy you dinner. Are you sleeping over at Jaejoong hyung’s again?”
“Yeah, why?”
“Great, then we can buy dinner to go and eat with Ji Yool. I’m thinking of sleeping over too.”
A moment passed in silence after Yoochun’s words, Changmin’s inscrutable gaze boring into him.
“That’s not what I came here for,” Changmin said quietly.
“Oh? Then, what?”
Changmin came around to stand next to Yoochun’s swivel chair, eyes smoldering. “I’ve been good, don’t I get a reward?”
“Reward?” Yoochun repeated. He had an idea where this was going. “I remember I pay you very well Changmin-ah, anymore and you could buy the company from me.”
“Exaggeration doesn’t suit you hyung. I wasn’t thinking about money.”
Changmin leaned down and kissed him hard. Yoochun didn’t fight it.
--
“So we’re good then, right Junsu-yah?” Jaejoong asked, feeling accomplished. Junsu nodded, slightly uncomfortable with Jaejoong’s familiarity. To say he didn’t trust the man completely was an understatement, but neither was it a lie. “You have nothing to worry about. Just leave everything to me.” That made Junsu even more uncomfortable.
“Jaejoong-sshi-”
“Hyung. You can call me hyung, Junsu-yah, -sshi sounds so impersonal.”
Junsu hesitated. “All right. Uh-Jaejoong…hyung. Even if you seem perfectly capable of doing things on your own, but I’d feel more comfortable if you found someone to help you organize.”
“Well, I suppose that wouldn’t be a bad idea,” Jaejoong mused. The more he thought about it, the better it seemed. Junsu couldn’t help but notice the odd gleam in his eye. “No, no. Actually, you’re right. I think I will find someone to help organize. In fact I know just who to recruit.”
“Oh?” Junsu asked curiously. Jaejoong hyung always seemed so…interesting. A bit flighty but surprisingly proficient. “Who?”
“Ah, don’t worry about it Junsu-yah, just know that the party will be a success.”
“I never doubted that.”
“Didn’t you?” Jaejoong said with an inflection that implied he knew about Junsu’s lingering distrust. “Well, never mind about that,” Jaejoong waved flippantly. “Just one last thing. About Hye Bin…”
“Yes?” Junsu asked, a little wary but once again curious with the older man’s train of thought.
“I didn’t give you the whole ‘Oppa Talk’ in which I threaten you and warn you off from her before the wedding, and I also think that it’s too late to give it to you now since you’re married and all but I just wanted you to know,” He leaned in closer, as close as he could get with Junsu’s desk between them. “You seem like a nice guy Junsu, so I don’t see the need to warn you or threaten you. But Hye Bin’s a sweet girl. She’s quiet and shy at first, and maybe that’s not your type, but give her the chance and she can make you happy.”
Junsu was left momentarily speechless. “Um. Uh-”
“Don’t hurt her, Junsu-yah,” he said and was gone before Junsu could even begin to form a coherent sentence.
I don’t plan to he should have said. I hope I don’t is what he felt like.
The rest of his day was uneventful, his scattered thoughts lending to his lack of productivity. Hye Bin was at the center of every thought, feelings mixed and unidentifiable, Jaejoong’s words adding to the confusion.
Hye Bin was a sweet girl, and they were very compatible. He didn’t know about love, but he garnered an affection for her that he couldn’t deny. It made him happy to see her happy. It felt nice to have someone to come home to, to live for someone other than himself. He had no doubt that Hye Bin could make him happy. She was doing it now.
But did he make her happy?
He wasn’t sure, and he didn’t know how to ask without embarrassing himself. She seemed happy and she’d said so a few times but then those had all been very vague. Junsu had never been great with women either, so what did he know?
He sighed, shaking his head as he tried to get back to work. No use thinking about things that weren’t a problem anyway. He and Hye Bin would deal with their relationship in parts, working things out when they needed to. No need to over think things now when everything was going so well. Better to work on things that were a problem.
“Hee Bon,” he said into the intercom. “Can you please connect me to Park Yoochun-sshi’s office please? Thank you.”
“Yes, sir, right away.”
Junsu waited a moment, deciding to put the phone on loudspeaker. He should really get back to work. He turned on his computer, typed in his password, and opened several files that had been emailed to him by department heads. Looking at the files, Junsu couldn’t help but groan. He really should have started much earlier.
“Excuse me, sir,” Hee Bon’s voice sounded. “I’m sorry, but Mr. Park is currently unavailable. His secretary says he’s in a meeting. She also asked when would be a suitable time to call back.”
“That’s fine then, Hee Bon,” Junsu said a little put off. “Tell them I’ll just call back some other time.”
“I will, sir.”
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome, sir.”
Junsu sighed again, leaning back into his seat, fingers idly tinkering with his side burns. Well, what did he expect? That the other man would jump to answer his phone just because Junsu called? He certainly seemed like it, with the amount of phone calls he’d bombarded Hee Bon with. Junsu was just a little embarrassed because it’s what he’d expected.
--
“Shit,” Changmin groaned as Yoochun licked his cock clean. “I don’t care what Jaejoong hyung says. You’re better with your mouth.”
“I’m glad you know,” Yoochun smirked, moving up to kiss Changmin on the mouth. He snuck a tongue into his mouth, letting Changmin taste himself on Yoochun’s lips. The younger man moaned, hands, behind Yoochun’s neck to deepen the kiss. Yoochun pulled back while he still could. “Changmin-ah…”
“What is it hyung?”
“Changmin…I don’t think we should do this anymore.” Changmin stared at him for a moment, uncomprehending.
“What? Why?”
“Let’s not play dumb, dongsaeng, it doesn’t look good on you.” Yoochun said gently, carefully watching the play of emotions on Changmin’s face.
“What?” Changmin repeated, honestly confused. “I don’t understand.”
“It means that this,” he signaled to their disheveled clothing and the bit of come still on his fingers, “This thing we’re doing, isn’t just for fun anymore.”
“I hope you’re not trying to flatter yourself by implying I might be in love with you,” Changmin countered, some of his usual sarcasm returning.
“Not with me, Changmin-ah, not with me.”
Changmin looked at Yoochun sharply, the inkling of condescension he found there fueling more than his embarrassment. “You should continue playing dumb, hyung, it looks better on you.” He stood, embarrassed not because he wasn’t wearing any pants or had Yoochun’s cock down his throat half an hour ago-but because his hyung was more perceptive than Changmin had dared think.
“Changmin,” Yoochun said, placating, as Changmin mechanically fixed his pants. “You know I love you and I more than enjoy our times together, but you shouldn’t be doing this stuff with me when you have someone you want to do it with. I don’t want to be used as some kind of replacement either.”
“Hyung I don’t-”
“I know, Changmin, I know. But that’s what it’s starting to feel like.”
There was nothing but the rustle of clothing for minutes that seemed too long, silence heavier than it’s ever been between them. “Yoochun hyung…” Changmin began.
“No, it’s all right,” Yoochun said with a fond smile, coming close and pecking Changmin lightly on the lips. “It’s not like I’ve ever said no. But I don’t think I should say yes anymore either. You’re still young Changminnie, you shouldn’t be trying to run away yet. Run towards.”
Changmin bit his lip in an unconscious gesture of uncertainty. Yoochun was going to miss being able to kiss it away. “Towards? You think I can do that?”
“It’s about time that you did, dongsaeng,” Yoochun said, unable to resist ruffling his hair a bit. “Let go of the past and embrace the future. Work that bit of charm you know you have and I guarantee you, I’m not the only one who won’t be able to say no.”
“Thanks, hyung,” Changmin said with a fake gag and a roll of his eyes. “I’m fine with this.” Changmin mused, suddenly sobering.
“Surprisingly, I am too. I’m going to miss your mouth Changmin-ah.” Yoochun said, with a leer in Changmin’s direction.
“Not as much as I’m going to miss yours,” Changmin returned shamelessly, taking the bait. Yoochun watched him leave with only a tiny bit of melancholy. It’s about time he straightened out not only his company, but his life too. He sighed, feeling light, courtesy of Changmin’s talented tongue and a mix of his own self-awareness.
“Mi Young,” he called, sticking his head out of his office to hide his rumpled clothing, courtesy of Changmin’s equally talented hands. “Have any calls for me come in?”
“Yes, sir,” Mi Young replied immediately. “There were two from clients in the Gyeonggi-do district, they want to know when the next shipment will be coming in. The Head of Sales also called to tell you that he’ll email you the quarterly reports by seven instead eight tomorrow. There are also personal messages from your mother and Hye Bin-sshi. Also, Mr. Kim Junsu called but since you were busy he said he’d call again some other time.”
“He didn’t leave a message?” Yoochun asked, a little too hopefully.
“No, sir, he didn’t,” his secretary replied.
“Did he say when he was going to call back?”
“I’m sorry, sir, he didn’t either.”
“Thanks then,” He said, pushing back into his office. So Junsu had called. Well, there was something to smile about.
--
“Good night Ji Yool-ah,” Changmin said into the little girl’s hair, kissing her temple and slowly tiptoeing out of the room. Just as he gently closed her door, the sound of another one opening interrupted the silence. “Hyung,” Changmin called out, walking out into the foyer. “You’re home.”
“Hey,” Jaejoong replied, removing his shoes and putting them away. Hanging his coat in a closet, he asked, “Ji Yool’s asleep?”
“Yeah, just now,” Changmin replied, “Did you eat yet?”
Jaejoong nodded his assent. “Had dinner with Yunho-yah. How about you?”
“Yoochun hyung bought us dinner. He was going stay over but something came up.” Changmin said, following the older man into the kitchen. “You seem to be getting pretty close to this Yunho guy.”
Jaejoong laughed. “Is that what it looks like?” He took out a bottle of soju from the fridge and offered one to Changmin, who shook his head. Jaejoong settled on a stool and shed his suit jacket, laying it haphazardly onto the table. Rubbing his neck he sighed, “I guess so.” A small smile played onto his face and Jaejoong failed to notice the tightening of Changmin’s mouth.
“Hyung!” Changmin said loudly all of a sudden. He remembered Ji Yool sleeping and promptly lowered his voice. “Hyung,” he said more quietly but with no less determination. “There’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you.”
“Huh?” Jaejoong asked, taking a sip from the bottle. “What is it Changmin-ah?”
“You see, um-the thing is, I-I-” Changmin stuttered, heart racing. He watched Jaejoong, who looked at him with curious, encouraging eyes.
“Go ahead, Changming.”
“Well you-a-and me-it might sound kind of sudden but-” Changmin took a deep breath, trying to calm his nerves. It was now or never. Run towards. “Hyung, I think I-”
“Appa?” Ji Yool said, rubbing her eyes as she stood at the kitchen door.
“Ji Yool-ah,” Jaejoong said, quickly abandoning his soju on the table to take the little girl into his arms. He shot Changmin a look that said we’ll talk later before saying to the little girl, “Why are you awake, baby? Did you have a bad dream?” The little girl nodded, wrapping tight arms around Jaejoong’s neck and nuzzling her nose into his shoulder.
“I woke up and no one was there,” she whispered with her eyes closed. “I thought you and Uncle Changmin left me. I was so lonely, appa.”
“Shh…it’s all right, it’s all right,” Jaejoong said as her voice wavered and tears threatened to fall. “Don’t cry, baby. We’re still here, see? No one’s going to leave, okay?” She nodded still fell onto her chubby cheeks, red staining the supple skin. “Let’s put you to bed.”
He glanced at Changmin while walking out the door, to which the younger man just waved him away. Ji Yool needed her appa and Changmin could wait. He’d been waiting for a while anyway; he could stand to wait a little longer.
