I think parents are really important. I mean super super important. So important that I don't think that parents REALLY understand how important they are. Every interaction, every opinion, approval, disapproval, every secret they did or did not keep, type of involvment or lack thereof imprints on a child's brain. And has much as a child wants to say "You're being stupid so screw you," it's really hard to actually mean it.
