I have thought about doing this for the longest time.. music rules the majority of my life and its a form of expression that is the most relatable no matter where you're from, your life situation, or what you know/believe about yourself. music brings so many together and i know for sure that this list will grow but for the last 6 years, i've dedicated myself to music in a very intense way and through this journey, i have come across each of these songs and feel the need to share. (oh and obviously there are thousands of songs that i have missed or maybe forgotten but i couldn't bring myself to delete any of these)
I recommend listening to these songs as you read through the explanation behind them..
01. "Bittersweet Symphony" - The Verve
Okay, a lot of people think of this song as the theme song of their lives and i do too. But for a second, i'm going to pretend that i am the one who discovered this song. This song is just... gosh.. amazing. It's filled with this epic classical background music that makes u feel like your are living in the movie of your life as you are listening to it. Then the words are about how you are only doing your best, you are making the choices that were the most right at the moment and you are entitled to the life you are living. it is soley yours. there is a reason that so many people connect with this song. And as for me, personally, my life has been filled with so many moments where i needed to make drastic choices that affected the rest of my life and who i am today and i feel like this life is really mine. this song reminds me that i feel that way.
02. "Flower Duet" - Lakme, Act 1
the first time i heard this song, i stopped everything that i was doing, sat back, and emersed myself in the music. I even, without really being aware of it, was kinda trying to stop breathing because i found it distracting from the song it was so beautiful! this song is a perfect example of timeless music that represents the true beauty that life is.
03. "The Weight" - The Band
This is my roadtrip song. without a doubt. always has been. because there is just something about this song that feels at like 'hopeful for the next adventure' at the same time as 'at peace with everything until now'. perfect for any journey.
04. "Firefight" - Jimmy Eat World
I have all of Jimmy Eat World's albums so it's actually really weird that i picked this song. Jimmy Eat World is so much more than a pop/punk band with nice harmonies and catchy phrases. these guys are the real deal. artists with an observational and influential place in the world. I truly believe that. Everything they do is amazing and if any of you want an album to start off with them, listen to the self titled 2001 album. Anyways, this song, i actually had on repeat while reading a whole fanfic so it often reminds me of the storyline. However, this song is so memorable on its own. It is so fast and epic like the feeling you get once you make a decision, and things start to take affect but so fast that it's too late to go back now. its amazing.
05. "Time of Our Lives (feat. Vega 4) [Swiss-American Federation Remix]" - Paul Van Dyke
Wow, the amount of time i spent looking for this song was unreal.. NO ONE had the correct version from "Into the Blue". This song is on this list because in my opinion, it is the ultimate song for feeling like a young person enjoying the prime of your life with so much time and potential ahead of you.
06. "Space Monkey" - Placebo
The whole album is probably the most important album of my life. When i moved to a different country, where i had to learn a new language, new culture and make new friends, i was in this really dark/complicated place that no one can understand unless you've been there already. the anger that consumed me made me feel very alone. i listened to this album a lot while i was in this period which is kinda funny because it's not like its an angry or depressing album. it is however very twisted and spurs on different emotions that i think we don't let ourselves feel on a day to day basis. this song is the darkest and most original song on the album. i can't really explain why i love it so much.
07. "Where Is My Mind" - The Pixies
Funnily enough, for a few years i thought that this song was by Placebo. Only later did i realize that the version i had was just labeled wrong. So at least i was appreciating the original though i know that placebo did do a cover of it. (not a bad cover but not all that different from the original). i was 14 years old, and this song was the song that made me realize that i love music more than just as cool background noise.
08. "Emergency Exit" - Beck
Geuro is one of my favorite albums for sure. and this song was always that song i never could find myself skipping over. it's just so goddamn sexy.. i tend to see scenes in my head when i listen to a lot of songs and this song definately brings up certain fantasies when i listen to it ;)
09. "Fallen" - Sarah Mclachlan
I can no longer listen to Sarah Mclachlan without wanting to cry. there was an evening in which i thought i was going to leave my whole family behind because i gave up on the life they were trying to set up for me. it was the most difficult, lonely, upsetting night i have every had in my life. i literally sat upstairs on the roof of our house and cried for hours listening to this song on repeat. since then, i cant listen to sarah mclachlan.
10. "Inside of Love" - Nada Surf
For the longest time I, and i still am, aspire to fall in love. i have a lot of feelings and thoughts as to why i haven't yet but this song just kind of felt like my anthem for way too long. if u really want to get the full affect of this song, listen to it at 5/6 in the morning, just when the sky is this greyish blue, and watch the sun rise by yourself.
11. "Overweight" - Blue October
Loved Blue October for so long. One of my top 3 bands. this is the song that introduced me to them actually from a similar list by this girl who did, "100 songs Everyone Has to Have" a few years ago. They have the best lyrics hands down. its freakin poetry what they write. and this song is all about carrying the responsibility and burdens of yourself and everyone around you which i completely relate to.
12. "Oh My Stars" - A Weather
Sooooooooo pretty! This song is just so pretty i can't handle it sometimes, and there is this sort of moment in the song where you listen to it, it's like it literally gives you a "eureka" moment, of "oh, i'm in love with you.. well gosh..." it's like suddenly, you want to be touched by the person, loved, cradled, everything that feels good. I want to feel this way so bad it's unreal. i discovered this song only a few months ago but i cant stop listening to it since. it's become very important to me.
13. "Easy Silence" - The Dixie Chicks
This song is kinda funny cuz... on one hand it's pretty political and on the other hand it's a love song. I am very connected to both matters and do see the connection between them in this song. The world is often chaotic and horrific and moving too fast for our liking, and we should all strive to find someone who can sometimes make the rest of the world go away and give us a sense of peace.
14. "Break Stuff" - Limp Bizkit
Lol anyone remember them!?!?!? This is the first song i listen to when I'm pissed off. Without a doubt.
15. "Portrait of A Summer Thief" - Sounds Under A Radio
I just loved this song for a really long time. it's just so epic.
16. "Love Grows" - Edison Lighthouse
If I could sing, i would sing this song to kareoke. a lot of people would say that if they could sing, they would make a career out of it but my goal would be to kareoke to this song. i don't know why. its just one of those songs that it so full of simplicity, joy, and sweetness.
17. "Will You Return?" - The Avett Brothers
first young love. so cute. so innocent. pure. sweet. plus the rhythm is adorable. i always sing a long and dance to it whenever or wherever i hear it... it's actually gotten embarassing a couple of times.
18. "The Weight of the World" - The Editors
Wow... there is no voice that is as haunting as this guy's... everytime i hear a song by them, it's as if they leave an imprint on my bones. this song always reminds me that i could be living life in a more fulfilling way. that i need to. that it's worth it and it's beautiful.
19. "Are You In?" - Incubus
I always thought of this as a morning song. It was only recently after someone told me to see the video clip, did i realize that this is also a super sexy song. this song is on this list mainly because i have loved it for so long.. you know how when you love a song so long, it's like it just becomes one of those songs in the soundtrack of your life? there for so many moments and periods of your life that it will never "go out of style" for you.. this song is like that for me.
20. "Permission" - Sixx:A.M.
Discovered this song from a playlist for a fic. Filled with everything i love. Emotional rock with a grungey voice. these type of songs are my kryptonite :) The chorus makes me want to lift my hands in the air and sing along with the words.
21. "Sorry" - Buckcherry
This song is mainly on the list because of the line, "I love how you kiss, I love all your sounds" because I tend to squeal and jump around and meow and giggle and if someone where to say to me, "I love all your sounds", i would just melt. it's not only accepting my silliness but to adore it and to enjoy it is just.. heavennnnnn!! my dream.
22. "Assasin" - John mayer
This song kinda relays my fantasy... there is something so sexy in my mind if someone where to come and know that he can get just about any girl he wants and thinks that he can come and have the power in the relationship or whatever it is, and little does he know, the other person totally woos him over and he falls in love completely against his will. i think it is so romantic. and the real way to fall in love because i believe that there should be no effort made to do so. it should be totally out of control and amazing and passionate and wonderful. i would love to fall in love like that. with someone who didn't mean to but accidently fell in love with me as well. this song is all about that and written in such a playful way, i love it.
23. "Little Acorns" - The White Stripes
The original is with some dialogue in the beginning but i cut it out because i don't want to hear it everytime. This song is what i refer to as my bad-ass ass shaking song. yes, you read correctly. the beat is hypnotic and the only thing i move when i am dancing to this song is my ass. it's so fun. just try it :)
24. "Wrap You Around Me" - Sean Kingston
i LOVE LOVE LOVE Sean Kingston... this song is so top 40 and sweet and easy. i just wanna curl up with someone while listening to it.
25. "Lucky" - Jason Mraz feat. Colbie Callait
This song has become the song i sing to my little nephew whenever im helping him go to sleep. he always gets so quiet and it's become our little lullaby.
26. "Transatlanticism" - Death Cab For Cutie
I'm not a big death cab for cutie fan except for when it comes to this album.. this song i've only been listening to again a lot recently. lately, it's become my favorite song to drive to because it's so epic. so soft. so beautiful.
27. "Masse Oo Mattan" - Moshe Ben Ari
This song is in hebrew :) i have a lot of songs that adore in hebrew but this is probably my absolute absolute favorite.. hard to choose though. It's all about taking and giving in relationships. Very beautiful. I really hope you all will give it a try.
28. "Little Liar" - Joan Jett
Joan Jett is one of the best bad-asses out there and a great role model for women. This song is vulnerable yet not willing to be a victim at the same time. My other kareoke song would be this. Fine not kareoke. i would fuckin love to sing this with a band, tons of black makeup, and growl out, "little liar, i believe in you".
29. "Fresh Blood" - Eels
Holy mother of god.. this song is so freakin hot... and badass... and everything sinful and good. i want to have some sexy time to this song for sure.
30. "Starstruck" - Santigold
My striptease song :)
31. "She's So High" - Tal Bachman
My other theme song. I have a very silly personality a lot of the time... to the point where people think i'm actually on drugs or drunk or something. thats just in relation to the title of the song. more to do with the context, i often tend to feel like im a kind of different world of my own and i rather enjoy it.
32. "So Far Away" - Staind
Again, emotional rock with a grungey voice... kryptonite. I've played this song over a thousand times and yet it still hits a chord with me.
33. "Wonderful Life" - Zucchero
Took forever to find this version of this song and even when i did, it was after going a ton of videos in youtube. There should be more songs like this, so full of hope and wonder about life.
34. "Out From Under" - Britney Spears
This might seem really weird cuz it's britney but... a good friend of mine once told me, before i heard this song, that this song reminds him of me. i listened to it and, i find the sweet vulnerability to be rather disarming. since then, i consider this song mine.
35. "Hot" - Avril Lavigne
I'm sure a lot of you thinking, wait a minute... what this crap i am starting to see on this list!? first britney, now freakin avril lavigne!!!?? but wait, while a lot of the words in this song are crap. the chorus is just so.. young and carefree. this song is exactly how i feel when im running around with a boy and we're just silly and playful and stealing kisses every other corner. while i think avril is not the brightest or strongest singer out there, i believe her when she sings. she's a very simple girl. her music is not going to stay around 300 years. but she believes what she sings. i enjoy listening to her.
36. "Patience" - Take That
I love pop. And i love harmonies. But other than that this song is easy on the ears, the song is often how i feel whenever i start something with somebody. i am constantly needing space at first because while i have a lot of pain and walls, there is so much love that im dying to give and share. just have patience with me.
37. "Let's Live For Today" - The Grass Roots
This song is my motto for life. plus, the harmonic la's are just an awesome bonus!
38. "Turpentine" - Brandi Carlile
I like sitting on my roof at the end of the day and listening to this song. i loved this song for so long, it feels like my own personal song even though im pretty sure its famous..
39. "Undone (The Sweater Song)" - Weezer
Sexiest party song ever.
40. "The Origin of Love" - Rufus Wainwright
This song is a story of the myth behind the idea of Soulmates. how there were 4 armed, 4 legged, 2 headed creatures who were one day split into two and forced to find each other during their lives. the whole story is fascinating to me and just an interesting idea. but rufus' voice is what sealed the deal. not too high, not too low. just in a class of his own. love this song
41. "Open Up" - KoRn
This is the sexiest angry song i've come across thus far. full of frustration. full of movement. full of begging and at the same time, defiance. love it.
42. "Pure Shores" - All Saints
Sexy sweet song. if ipods were waterproof, i would listen to this song underwater.
43. "Bittersweet" - Apocalyptica
I can't find that many Apocalyptica songs that are like this for some reason. only a couple more. but this song in itself is just.. wow. epic and dark and emotional overwhelming.
44. "But the Best For You" - Scorpions
Love the Scorpions!! the singer's voice is incredibly unique. This song is playful and different and yet has a sense of vulnerability to it. it's one of those songs where i went through a time where i just couldn't get enough of it. wow i had it on repeat for weeks if not a couple of months. i still listen to it and get thrown back to that era of my life.
45. "Come Pick Me Up" - Ryan Adams
I try not to put recent favorites in these sort of mixes but this song just got it's hooks in so deep and refuses to let go. On one hand it's so romantic, on the other hand it's so heartbreaking. so much emotion. i just.. wow... definately made an impression.
46. "Icky Thump" - The White Stripes
Everybody has a song that they air guitar to and feel like a total badass... this one's mine.
47. "Everything" - Alanis Morissette
to have someone not only accept some of your flaws but to also be drawn to some of them...? wow.
48. "Over & Over" - Three Days Grace
can't you see how addicted i am to these type of songs? this particular song of course reminds me of a guy and we have had this on/off relationship for so long and there was something damge and addictive about it and while this song is so close and personal to me, it still reminds me of him each time.
49. "Mad World" - The Red Paintings
It's Mad World.. i have like 7 versions of this song but i think this is my favorite.
50. "Fairytale Gone Bad" - Rufus Wainwright
i dont know why i am so attached to this song but i am. it's not just any regular pop song. it stays with ME at least.
