A rainbow was stretched across the dark grey sky, its pastel colours the only brightness in the city. A lone man was walking along the pavement, hands buried deep in the pockets of his hooded jacket. His head was bowed, hiding his oceanic eyes from the world. He exuded an air of happiness, the feeling contrasting with his stance, his shoulders hunched over and head bowed. He shivered, despite the warmth the air held, as the wind traced a line down his spine, ruffling his hair from behind. He looked up to the sky as sheet lightning flashed violently across it, and paused, counting and waiting for the thunder. It soon came, the sound tearing through the sky and, suddenly, as if the thunder was the sound of the clouds ripping open, rain began to fall.

The droplets were small at first, only big enough for Matt to feel them if he held his hand out, like a child being told to shut their eyes and hold their hand out, waiting to receive a present, but soon the rain began to pour down, and Matt started to walk again, breaking into a run and feeling the water droplets striking his skin. His arms were held up, shielding his head from the rain as best they could. The rainbow had been gone for a while, vanquished by the storm. The day had been replaced by the dark night, the sky dotted with stars where it was visible between the still-heavy clouds. The bright, round moon was half-hidden, peaking out from the cover of the clouds where it could. Matt stopped, shuddering as a raindrop ran down the back of his neck, and looked up at the sky, his arms slowly dropping to his sides. The water falling from the sky dribbled down his face and he sighed, smiling happily, starting to giggle maniacally. His eyes fell shut and he just stood, not caring that he was getting soaked through. He tilted his head further back, exposing his body to the elements as completely as he could, his arms stretched out behind him. Unbeknownst to Matt, who was still absorbed in the sounds of the storm, the feeling of raindrops hitting him and running down over the sharp angles of his face and the smooth skin of his neck, a figure came running out of the building to the side of him, jacket pulled over its head.

“Matt, what the hell are you doing?” the figure, Dom, shouted as he ran closer, breaking Matt’s trancelike state. “You’re soaking, come inside!”

He came skidding to a halt at Matt’s side, the layer of water covering the pavement providing no traction, shivering as the cold began to bite and pulling his jacket on properly.  His skin came out in goose bumps and he gritted his teeth to stop them from chattering.

“It’s nice out here,” Matt murmured, reaching for Dom’s hand and taking it in his own. “The rain, the night… it’s beautiful.” As Matt turned to face him the moon came out from behind the wispy end of a heavy-looking cloud and shone upon one side of Matt’s face, shrouding the other side in shadow. The skin of his cheekbones seemed to almost reflect the light cast upon them, his cheeks dark and the hollows of his eye sockets hidden in almost complete blackness. He was ethereal and graceful, with his face half-hidden in shadow and rain streaming down his skin.

“You’re beautiful,” Dom whispered, raising his free hand to cup Matt’s cheek, wiping away the water droplets that clung to the skin. He squeezed the hand that was in his and stepped closer, Matt turning on the spot so his body was facing Dom. Leaning in slowly Dom caught a glimpse of blue before he closed his eyes, pressing their lips together softly. The rain continued to fall, their hair starting to stick to their foreheads and tendrils curling at Dom’s neck. Dom stroked his thumb over Matt’s cheek as Matt deepened the kiss and twisted his fingers in Dom’s hair, tugging gently. They broke apart when the burning need for air became too much. Panting into each other’s mouths they both smiled, hands falling from hair and face.

“Come on,” Matt said, gently pulling on Dom’s hand. “Let’s get inside.” Dom smiled, squeezing Matt’s hand and following him in. They slowly climbed the stairs of the building, not caring that they were leaving a trail of water drops on the shiny floor that glittered in the artificial light, refracting it so every drop produced its own rainbow, pastel colours in the grey building.
