Fear, Despair and Memory ext_1355837 August 23 2012, 12:11:11 UTC
The fear of fear (fear is a sort of pain) , expressed in the letter comes from the right intuition that the real expierenced fear comes up, every time it is rememberd, with the same intensity. A small part of fear is due to the unkonwn of the future occurence of the feard actions and ist consequences, while despair is(=) facing unavoidable pain.
Unfortunmately western psychlogical tinking, especially so far at it is incoporated in polirtical thinking, is doing always the third and fourth steps, without any clear defintions.

I oriental tradition, because of the hard suppression of despotism there, there are a lot techniques concerning pain (which fear is a sort of), namely faqirism. One of the main features is to maintain logical thinking and expression of it, especially on a social strategic level. Fortunately the letter demonstrates a good condition from this point of view of the imprisoned.

The general mathematical rule, that a minus is to be countered by a plus is applicable to the imagination associated to feelings too (details are left to the reader).

Foucault has wirtten a lot about "controlling and punishing", and scenes like the one described in the letter occurer there too.

Power and restistance, put in the techniques of "discplin and control", which is the regime of an early industrializing stage.
