Day Four: Working Without Restriction.

As students, we have become accustomed to responding to prompts pretty easily.  Teachers have been telling me “write about this” for as long as I can remember.  Even here, in the Eng. 105 classroom, our entire curriculum is developed around these prompts.  You grade has been affected ultimately by your ability to effectively respond to the prompt and adhere to all of the parameters of the assignment.

So what will you do without limits?

In my own classes, students panic when we are offered the opportunity to write a “free poem.”  What do you do when confronted with a blank piece of paper, a white computer screen, and you don’t have a specific goal in mind?  We talked a lot earlier in the semester about writer’s block-how we freak out about the simple idea of writing, let alone writing from and for ourselves!

Today your assignment is to write a poem, song, short story, or creative-non fiction piece about anything you want, so long as it is neither offensive nor obscene.  In all actuality, this is probably the most difficult of all of our Livejournal assignments thus far.  I want this piece to come from you.  This piece should inspire and impress me.  If you are really struggling, go back and read through our previous three assignments.  See if you can pick a single word or idea out of one of those prompts-steal it and make it your own.
