Series/Fandom: Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
Deviance: 1
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Species: Half-elf
Canon Used: Tales of Symphonia/Dawn of the New World - Video Game canon.
Appearance: Richter is a handsome young man with long, red hair and green eyes. He's always seen wearing a pair of silver glasses. Dressed in a slate gray/purple stylized suit with lavender detailing, Richter wears a white shirt under it. The collar of his jacket has a sort of 'feather' design in the same lavender color as the rest of the detailing. The main part stops at his waist, with trailing parts at the waist. The sleeves are rolled back revealing the end of his white shirt and brown gloves. He keeps his sword and axe's sheaths at his side and back respectively.
As Richter is taken from after the Perfect Ending of Dawn of the New World, there is now a deep red jewel on the left side of his forehead, just above his eyebrow. As it's roughly the same color as his hair and he doesn't appear to bother to comb his hair at all, it's not all that easy to notice. Unless it catches the light... Or he does one of his hair flips.

A red haired man with a penchant for purple. Psychology: In the reunited world of Aselia - and the split worlds of Tethe'alla and Sylvarant before it - half-elves experienced heavy discrimination by both humans and elves. Richter was treated more-or-less the same as his fellow half-elves; locked away in the basement of the institute and largely ignored by the human population (save for when the half-elves made some scientific breakthrough or another). While the amount of time he spent in the Academy is unknown, it's hinted at in game that Richter spent most - if not all - of his life prior to Aster's death in Sybak and had to endure being treated as something less than human. A lot of Richter's personality and antagonistic attitude towards everyone has to do with the atmosphere in Sybak.
As a former research at Sybak, Richter knows a lot about the world of Aselia, the mana that it relies on and the Summon Spirits that are tied with them. His ability to analyze his environment is top-notch and Richter can easily pick up on small clues that help him navigate through ruins or an enemy's attack patterns. After all, he was able to come up with a counterattack for one of Ratatosk's trademark attacks after only seeing it twice (and with a two year break in between both viewings). Richter also seems to have a very good idea of how combat and military organizations work as he was the one who reorganized the Vanguard, a resistance force formed by the oppressed Sylvaranti to rebel against the Tethe’allans oppression, into the military force it is seen as in game.
Richter as a person is definitely someone who takes some getting used to. He’s harsh and doesn’t like to mince his words. Rather, he feels that emotions lose meaning once they are put to words and subsequently doesn’t like to say anymore than is necessary. Subsequent conversations with him usually result in the redhead snapping at his poor conversation partner regardless of age, gender or species. The man doesn’t seem to have much in the way of sympathy. Despite all that, Richter is surprisingly honest; he barely lies to Emil in game and seems to prefer avoiding a topic all together over lying about it. Instead, he tends to offer only small parts of the truth, such as his explanation as to why he was helping Norton reclaim books that he had sold from the Sybak library and his ‘original reason’ for seeking Ratatosk’s Core.
Once one gets past all the angry snarls and harsh words and earns Richter’s trust though, he is fiercely loyal and dedicated to those he cares about. Unfortunately, the only person to have actually tried to befriend Richter also ended up unintentionally colouring all subsequent relations that Richter had. Aster will always be the one person that the half-elf holds in highest regards and he neither wants nor particularly seems to care about forming any other lasting friendships outside of the one he had.
He’s strong-willed as well. The Centurions’ Cores affect the human heart and mind negatively and tend to drive people to madness when they are touching a Core for any long period of time. Richter was in contact with Aqua for over two years and, in spite of his actions, never succumbed to the madness that had afflicted the leader of the Vanguards, Brute, or another member of the resistance. In fact, Richter wound up affecting Aqua instead… Granted, his actions during the two years between Aster’s death and the game were fueled more by grief and anger than anything else but doesn’t it say something about a person when they can still operate despite crushing guilt and grief?
Speaking of guilt and grief, Richter spent the better part of two years saddled with grief over Aster's death. It coloured many of his actions during that time - his plans for revenge and, later, how he interacted with Emil - and though he hasn't quite overcome his grief Richter's come to terms with everything that's happened. At the very least, he's not nearly as antagonistic towards Ratatosk now as he was prior to getting his ass grassed.
Other Skills/Abilities: As a half-elf, Richter can sense the mana signatures of humans and elves. Which can be useful for identifying who is what.
He is also capable of using magic. His specialty lies in Water aligned spells (including healing spells) and Darkness, though his Mystic Arte is a Fire based one. Richter is also quite skilled in physical combat, using a sword and axe in combination. His combat artes use magic and physical attacks together, resulting in a fighting style that is unique to Richter.
As mentioned above, Richter was a researcher at Sybak before he was a member of the Vanguard. Suffice to say, his level of knowledge is pretty high on the scale (though his expression is pitiful).
Other Weaknesses: Poor personality aside, Richter has this gigantic soft spot for Aster and, by association, Emil. It's very hard for him to say 'no' to them or to find it in himself to actually hurt them.
He also can't cook to save his life.
History: Born in Tethe'alla, Richter was a half-elf researcher in Sybak. As such, he was locked in the basement along with other half-elves and so avoided and ignored any of the humans who he met. The status-quo remained the same until he met a young human boy who befriended him and left him with a few memorable words.
"Courage is the magic that turns dreams into reality."
The two of them eventually started researching mana together; particularly that of the Summon Spirit Ratatosk. Aster had theorized that Ratatosk helped control the flow of mana using monsters, and that the recent instability was the result of Ratatosk and his Centurions' sleep. So, the two went to meet with the Summon Spirit. The results were disasterous. Having been previously betrayed, Ratatosk had lost all trust in humans and killed Aster after they boy asked him to help monitor and manage the world's mana once more. This prompted Richter to lash out at the newly awakened Ratatosk which forced the Summon Spirit back to it's core form. Tenebrae, the Centurion of Darkness, prevented Ratatosk's destruction by taking the core and fleeing the Ginnungagap.
At that time, Richter began formulating a plan for revenge against Ratatosk... And how to deal with the consequences of that act.
When the game starts, Richter was in Luin looking for Marta. He comes across Emil (or, more accurately, Emil collides with him) being bullied in front of the statue of Lloyd. Richter chased off the bullies only to be stunned by the sudden reappearance of his dead friend. He brushed off the blond's questions but meets up with him again later when Emil tries to thank him for helping, only for him to become flustered because of Richter's cold demeanor. Richter broke the awkward conversation by asking Emil if he'd seen a girl named Marta and then reprimanded Emil for being so nervous. Before he left Emil's company again, Richter gave him a few words of encouragement and the courage phrase that Aster had told him.
The two met again when Emil returned from the dried up Lake Sinoa and told Richter that he'd met Marta there. Of course, this prompts Richter to try and shake more information out of Emil until the mayor interrupted. With permission to explore the Lake Sinoa Cave, the two set off towards the lake bed. There, they encounter Emil's uncle, Alba, who started to tear into Emil about coming out to this place and how much of a pest he was and so forth until Richter - reminded of the times where he was treated this way in Sybak - intervened. One can easily say that in the brief meetings he had with Emil in the beginning of the game was enough to give the poor boy conflicted opinions about the red head.
While in Lake Sinoa Cave, Richter teaches Emil the basics for fighting and the two form an awkward sort of mentorship (Emil is incredibly meek around the cold Richter and Richter unconsciously lashes out at the Aster lookalike Emil). It wasn't until they neared the end of the cave that Emil found out Richter's true intention; to kill Marta and reclaim Ratatosk's core on her forehead. That had been Richter's plan to start with... But Emil stopped both Marta and Richter before they could hurt each other. Marta took the opportunity to escape and Richter had to ask the Centurion of Water, Aqua, to help him move Emil away from the entrance so he could pursue Marta and the core on her forehead.
Except he ran into Lloyd instead. Suffice to say, the fight was rather one-sided and Richter was left injured and barely conscious. He passed out shortly after Emil appeared again and isn't seen or heard from for some time.
It turns out that Richter had been running around completing a fetch quest in order to procure some books that had been (illegally) sold from the Academic Resources Building in Sybak. At some point, he returned to the Church of Martel located in Palmacosta (probably to find some more information) and ran into Emil once more. A member of the Vanguard appeared shortly after Richter and Emil started conversing and revealed that Richter was a member of the Vanguard as well, though he defended Emil all the same. Once again, Richter tried to talk Emil out of his journey with Marta to collect the Centurion cores and awaken Ratatosk but to no result. To a certain extent, it was reassuring to see Emil growing a backbone, but it didn't help the feeling of guilt that the older man felt at the prospect of having to fight the young boy. It still didn't stop him from attacking Marta anyway. Only the intervention by Tethe'alla's Chosen Zelos stopped that murder attempt (Richter left a warning to Emil regarding Alice before departing). After this encounter, Richter tried to avoid encountering Emil and Marta for the large part.
Of course, it still doesn't stop him from running into Emil whenever the boy's alone. After their foray into Triet Ruins, Emil encountered Richter again; a brief monster battle in which Richter helped out later, the two started to talk about how the blond was suffering from strange dreams of Richter killing him. Knowing the truth of those dreams, Richter does what he can to console the other before departing, saying that he would spare him and Marta this time.
The next time they meet, Richter had cornered Marta while Regal and Emil were trapped in another part of the Temple of Ice. He mentioned briefly that he hadn't meant for Emil to witness the murder but his resolve won out over his guilt and Marta was 'killed'. Suffice to say, Richter was rather peeved at the whold 'ninja log' trick that Sheena pulled there. Once he found out it was a fake from Alice at least.
Despite that setback, Richter continued searching for various lost texts and items that he would need in order to achieve his goal. Part of the requirement meant he had to find the Cores (or perhaps he was just collecting the Centurions' Cores to maintain a guise of working for the Vanguard), one of which belonged to Tenebrae. In protecting Emil and Marta, he had been forced to return to Core form when a monster controlled by Alice was forced to self-destruct. Aqua, being a Centurion herself, noticed the suddenly influx in energy and tipped off 'Master Richter'; the two arrive at the alter in the Temple of Darkness just before Ratatosk and the others find their way in. Despite the pleas by Marta's party (or demands, in Ratatosk's case) Richter wasn't going to return Tenebrae's core to them. The only way they could reclaim their friend was through force, and Ratatosk was more than happy to oblige. That was the debut of Ratatosk's special technique, Ain Soph Aur. Richter had seen the attack once before - when Ratatosk had used it to kill Aster. With his new pact with the demons of Niflheim, Richter was able to counter the move and render it useless. The huge strain that all the rampant energy put on the Temple was too much though and everyone was caught in the subsequent cave-in. Richter was saved by Aqua and decides against chasing after the gang.
Their next meeting was in the Cape Fortress while the group attempted to rescue Zelos' sister, Seles, from the Vanguard (specifically, Alice and Decus) Before they could strike down Decus, Ricther interferes and defeats the party.
"I won't ask you to forgive me. You can curse me in hell instead!"
In the end, Richter couldn't kill Emil. Even though he suspected that the boy might be possessed by Ratatosk or was Ratatosk, without enough evidence, Richter could only see Aster. The half-elf withdrew and isn't seen by the group until they arrive in Sybak to try and find some answers for what was happening to Emil, who was starting to slip into 'Ratatosk Mode' with more alarming frequency. Richter is seen there again and Emil follows him into Cape Fortress for one final confrontation.
"This is fate. It was bound to be like this from the beginning... Most likely from the moment you were born."
Next meeting; Lezareno Building Number 2. Richter is confronted by Lloyd, Genis, Sheena and Zelos and defeats all but Lloyd, who is exhausted by the time Emil, Marta and Presea arrive. The party attacked and defeated Richter, but Ratatosk - never one to let his opponent escape unharmed - attempted to use Ain Soph Aur one more time to knock out Richter for good. Tired but determined to kill Ratatosk despite Emil's appearance, the half elf reflects the attack back at the party. The counter is quickly followed by Richter attempting whole heartedly to kill Ratatosk once and for all, an attempt that is foiled by both Marta and Lloyd. Unable to use the power of the Demons of Niflheim for extended periods of time and tired from his previous fight, Richter had to make another hasty retreat courtesy of Alice's monster Aramis.
His goal was within reach though. With the Sacred Stone in hand, Richter could seal the door to the Demonic Realm using his own body's mana; Ratatosk would not be needed and he could bring Aster back. When it came down to it though...
Richter simply wasn't strong enough.
In the end (and probably for the better). neither Emil or Richter's plans to seal Niflheim in the Ginunngagap succeeded. Instead, a strange sort of compromised was reached; the old seal for the Door in the Ginunngagap could no longer seal the demons of Niflheim so Richter would have to go through with his original plan as Ratatosk created a new seal. Like Aster before him though, Emil had left enough of an impression on Richter for him to come up with a new proposal for Ratatosk. As Ratatosk could split himself into two - a Core and a human self - Richter was willing to offer himself as the new host for Ratatosk's Core so that Emil (also Ratatosk) could return to the surface and live the life that Aster wasn't.
While it was far from what he originally intended... In it's own way, Richter got what he set out to achieve two years ago.
Canon Point: A few weeks after the Perfect Ending.
Reality Description: His world is a tale of a precarious and delicate balance. A fragile world both before and after it's reuniting, Aselia's mana balance was thrown off due to the original Kharlan Tree dying and Ratatosk's sleep. Even without the supernatural energy balance, the balance of power between the different races that lives together in the world has always, always been biased. Richter is more acutely aware of the discrimination than some others by the fact that he was not only a half-elf, but one who was unfortunately born in Tethe'alla.
The worlds are united only in name.
Tethe'allans, with their superior technology and wealth, look down upon the Sylvaranti who live in poverty, ignoring the fact that the wealth that they boast was at the expense of the Sylvaranti. Though the original heroes of world regeneration tried, discrimination and dissatisfaction runs rampant throughout the land. Despite this though, there are signs - small as they are - that there is change afoot. The mana imbalance is being corrected by Ratatosk and the strange weather phenomenon that plagued the world for two years has already subsided. As for the people... Well, that's what the Heroes of the first game are working on.
