Character: Sango
Fandom: Inuyasha
Personality: Sango is a kind person at heart, but due to the events at her introduction she is very troubled throughout most of the story. She doesn't smile very often and when she does it's usually a small one. She's prone to falling into deep depression, especially after a negative run-in with Kohaku. She's constantly worried about him and whether or not he'll be able to continue living since he’s her brother and one of the few ties she has left to her past. She certainly isn't down all the time, but it's not a long trip for her and she's very rarely seen as being incredibly happy. Her regular demeanor is usually very calm and collected.

She's still able to remain strong mentally most of the time as well as physically. As a demon exterminator her strength and abilities are very impressive, but so are her intelligence and her fortitude. She is able to think incredibly quickly during battle and her tactical skills are top-notch. Considering that her main weapon, Hiraikotsu, is a giant boomerang, this makes a lot of sense. She has to be able to judge the strength, trajectory, and the surrounding conditions within only a few seconds. She's quick to use any other weapon or poison she keeps with her if it will better suit the situation. She is also very confident in her skills, almost to a fault at times as she'll try to take on more than she can handle.

Thanks to her job Sango is usually very helpful and willing to assist anyone in need (or perhaps that's why she does her job). If she hears of a demon causing trouble somewhere she'll usually at least want to investigate the situation and take care of it however necessary. While she can easily work in a team she tends to act independently, especially when it comes to battle decisions. Normally this aids the group, but at times it can get her into trouble.

Sango treasures her friends and family, especially after losing so many loved ones to Naraku's plot. Kirara, despite being a cat demon, is the only long-time companion she has throughout the series and Sango is very close with her. Despite her usual demeanor, emotionally Sango is rather dependent on the survival of those she cares about and is terrified of something horrible happening to them. This again is understandable after Naraku's attack but it's a double-edged sword. As mentioned before, simple encounters with Kohaku can leave her depressed for a while. Technically he’s already dead, but she still cares for him and gets torn over trying to find a way to help him or doing something about the terrible things he's done (though these are always under Naraku's influence somehow). Sango seems to blame herself for everything that’s happened to him and for everything that he's done. She also starts feeling guilty that she can't bring herself to dislike him after witnessing so much of it. Later she becomes very dependent on Miroku as well and any time he comes close to dying she gets incredibly upset and starts acting suicidal. Sango would do anything to insure the survival of her friends, but this especially applies to the two of them. She'll put her life on the line without a second thought and often gets herself wounded in the process.

Sango is very stubborn, especially when it comes to something or someone she is at odds with. If she wants to fight or go on a dangerous mission it's incredibly hard to get her to take "no" for an answer. She also has a very short temper and though she usually does her best to keep from snapping it's obvious when she's angry. This affects her more in regular personal situations, especially if Miroku is involved. Whenever he tries something perverted on her she slaps him. However, if she finds him womanizing elsewhere she clearly gets jealous and becomes angry enough that her mere presence scares anyone near her. This usually ends up with her behaving violently in some way again (like hitting him over the head with Hiraikotsu), though it happens more often after they're engaged.

For some reason Sango never actually calls Miroku by his name, at least in the original version of the series. She always refers to him as "Houshi-sama", which is a term in Japanese that someone would use to refer to a monk or priest who isn't very familiar to them with some respect. No reason for this is made obvious but it's likely that after initially meeting him she was trying to keep herself emotionally distanced from him given the losses she'd been through and his general behavior around women. Eventually this clearly hadn't worked but she kept denying that she had any feelings for him which probably made her keep using it. By the time he finally proposed the name had just stuck.

In spite of all her strength, self-confidence, and stubbornness she does have her girly moments. Like Kagome, she enjoys things like relaxing at hot springs and doesn't seem to mind gossiping about others in their group though this is common practice with all of them. Also, when Miroku actually isn't doing perverted things and is being genuinely caring she tends to get flustered and starts acting awkwardly.

History: Sango was the daughter of the chief of a village of demon slayers which was near where the legendary Shikon no Tama had been created. She was trained in their arts of extermination and eventually became one of the best in the town. Fate dealt a cruel hand, however. While on an assignment with a team including her father and her younger brother Kohaku, he was possessed by the demon and killed their father and the rest of the team before she could do anything. Sango tried to free him but was hit in the back by his scythe, leaving her unable to stop the estate guards from shooting him dead with arrows. Sango managed to survive her injuries and was told by a disguised Naraku that the half-demon Inuyasha was responsible for this. He loaned her a shard of the Shikon Jewel to help her defeat him.

Sango found the group and confronted Inuyasha, only to quickly learn from the others that the shard was only deadening her pain and her wounds had reopened. She also found out that Naraku was the demon responsible for it all. They took her back to her village to recover, but it had been completely wiped out by demons. Still wanting revenge but unable to do it by herself, she agreed to join Inuyasha and his companions. Her unique skills, items, and knowledge were an excellent addition to their forces.

Naraku's next act against her was to use a jewel shard to return Kohaku to life with a wiped memory. He bartered with Sango to steal Inuyasha's sword Tetsusaiga and give it to him in exchange for her brother. She finally agreed, but of course it was a trap. The others arrived in time to save both her from attack and the weapon. Naraku and Kohaku escaped, however, and he continued to use the boy as a pawn knowing he'd be a major weakness for her.

She warmed up to the group at varying paces, getting along with Kagome rather quickly. She also seemed to have no problems with Shippo despite his being a demon and she reached an understanding and eventual friendship with Inuyasha (though it's always hard to tell with him). The most difficulty came with Miroku and this was due to his irresponsible attitude, womanizing, and habit of groping her whenever he found an opportunity. This usually earned him a slap in the face or a hit over the head with Hiraikotsu.

Due to the relationship between Inuyasha and Kagome, whenever the group split up to fight or otherwise Sango was usually teamed with Miroku. After a while it started becoming noticeable that Sango was getting angry any time he did something lecherous with any girl, which was fairly quickly identified as jealousy by the others. When it looked like they might perish in Mt. Hakurei, she exclaimed that she would rather die with him than escape on her own without quite realizing what she was doing. Later, after Miroku’s womanizing got her so annoyed that she let her guard down and was taken over by a demon and nearly killed him, he essentially proposed to her. She agreed, but when she asked if he'd stop flirting he didn't answer. This actually didn't change their relationship much right away as one might expect, but it did lead to much more noticeable development.

The group continuously traveled, making friends and foes, collecting jewel shards, fighting various demons, and having run-ins with Naraku and his minions which included Kohaku. Those encounters were especially painful for Sango due to the terrible things Naraku was making him do and the fact that he didn't remember her. Eventually, though, Sango discovered that he had in fact regained his memory but by this point he was set on destroying Naraku even at the cost of his own life with Kikyo's aid because she claimed that the only way to kill him was by purifying the shard that kept Kohaku alive and completing the jewel with that. Sango was set on finding another way or convincing Kohaku to do otherwise so she wouldn't have to lose him all over again. Miroku was well-aware of this and nearly killed himself trying to pull Naraku in with his Wind Tunnel from miasma exposure. Sango did not learn the full extent of his injuries, but was still worried about him after that and did whatever she could to keep him out of another situation like that. She finally asked him if he was all right before they went to fight a bone-eating demon but he lied to her and said he was fine.

When they finally encountered the demon and began to fight, however, she found out he wasn't really completely okay. He could barely handle taking in any poison before passing out. The demon wanted to eat her main weapon Hiraikotsu because it was made from the bones of other demons and eventually to save them she put a dissolving poison on it and threw it at the demon, killing him but also making her weapon completely useless. They went to a demon that could repair it with special medicines and she had to enter a jar and calm the spirits of the demons whose bones were in Hiraikotsu because they were angry that she had used such a strong poison. Eventually they agreed after hearing Miroku's own conviction after drinking some poison he got from the same demon (which he also didn't tell her about). She got her weapon back with the added ability to cut through miasma because of the purification it went through.

Timeline: Not long after Hiraikotsu is restored in chapter 488.

Abilities: Sango is a very skilled demon slayer and knows how to use a wide variety of weapons and poisons to her advantage. She's very athletic and physically fit, which she has to be for her job and especially to use Hiraikotsu. She's good at spotting and judging things about her opponents or surroundings which she has to be given her usual weapon. She also had good tactical and analytical skills and can generally keep her cool in tough situations, though that doesn't stop her from being reckless at times.

Inventory: Sango has a lot of demon slaying equipment that she carries, for the most part, in a blue and white cloth she wears around her shoulders while traveling, but I will be cutting down for both things that are likely iron and the fact that it's just a lot. She'll have her main weapon Hiraikotsu, which is a giant boomerang made from the compressed bones of demons. She'll also have her armor which consists of a black body suit and pink guards also made from the remains of demons that she puts on crucial joints. Finally she'll have her wakizashi, a one-handed blade that she wears while in armor.

Sango has an animal companion as well named Kirara. She's a cat demon with two tails that's normally very small and cute. She has the ability to transform into a much larger creature that is able to fly, emitting fire from her feet and tails while "running" on the air.

Sample writing: It took Sango a moment or two to process what was going on. Her surroundings, the flora...wherever this was it wasn't where she had just been with her companions. Add to that the fact that she could see none of them but Kirara anywhere nearby, she was was doing her best not to let herself get worked into a full-out panic.

"Houshi-sama?!" she called, looking around in vain for a familiar face to appear. After thinking for a few moments she also added "Inuyasha?!" If he couldn't hear her there was definitely trouble.

After waiting for a bit with no response she frowned and began scanning the area again, trying to survey where she was. She'd been trapped in Naraku's illusions before, but this place was too surreal for it to be an attempt by him. Other than the sky being blue, nothing looked familiar to her. She grasped the handle of Hiraikotsu and watched and listened carefully. It didn't seem like any demons were around, but with something obviously off about the situation and the fact that none of her friends who could say they sensed their presence were with her she needed to be as vigilant as possible.

She glanced down at Kirara to see if she had sensed something but was only confused by how the small demon was acting. She definitely seemed to think something was strange, but instead of growling and being ready to attack whatever might be out there she seemed more unnerved than anything.

Perhaps she hadn't noticed it all this time because she had been so taken aback, but when Sango lifted her head to see if she could determine anything about their surroundings she realized there was something around her head. She used her free hand to take it off so she could observe it. "That's strange. It looks like something a child would make." One that had practiced a lot too, apparently. Sango wasn't sure what it meant and while her first instinct was that it was all part of what was looking like an intricate trap, discarding it could be part of the plan. She kept it in her hand for now.

"Come on, Kirara," she said, looking down at her again. "Let's figure out what's going on so we can get back." With that, she began walking in the direction she had been facing, the demon trotting along in her smaller form for now until they had a better idea of what kind of danger they were in.

Sample journal entry: [Sango still doesn't seem all that confident using this device, considering the curious stare she gives it for a few moments before speaking.]

Uh, I think I have a better idea of what happened here now, but I have a few more questions.

[She frowns a bit worriedly and when she finally continues she sounds almost urgent.]

Has anyone seen any of my companions here? One is a monk with some prayer beads around his right hand. [She pauses and glances away for a second, her lips tightening just a bit before continuing.] There's also Kagome and Shippou and... Well, if you've met Inuyasha I'm pretty sure you'd remember him. I need to find them if they're here...

[Sango pauses before continuing, now looking more serious.]

I'm also wondering what it takes to fight these Fae creatures if I ever need to. I have some of my weapons, but they're designed for killing demons.

[She stares in confusion at the screen for a few seconds before finally tentatively hitting a button just before the feed cuts off.]
