Character Information:
Full Name: Winry Rockbell
Series Taken From: Fullmetal Alchemist
Power Retained: N/A. Winry has no powers of which to speak.
Background: Winry Rockbell grew up in a village called Rizenbul. It was a tiny place settled in some grassland, where everyone knew each other. It was a tight-knit community, despite the acres that usually separated homes. She was the only child of the two doctors, Sara and Urey Rockbell. Her grandmother on her father’s side is Pinako Rockbell, and an automail mechanic and an engineer.

Winry grew up along with the Elric family, consisting of Edward, Alphonse, and their mother Trisha. Her memories of their father Hohenheim are vague, since he left when they were all very young. The Elrics were like a secondary family and home to her. From a very early age Winry studied her parents vocation, but she always seemed more interested in automail. Since automail engineering requires a good amount of medical knowledge she tried to create a balance between the two. Her life was mostly an idyllic one. When not spent pressed into her parent's medical books, or her grandmother's tools, she and the Elrics would spend time together exploring the plains and hills of Rizenbul.

Things took a turn for the worse when she was about six years old, Winry’s parents entered into the Ishbal War as doctors helping the Ishballan. Shortly after this, Trisha fell victim to an illness that had spread throughout the village, and she died, leaving the two Elric brothers in the care of Pinako. Unsurprisingly the two of them had a very difficult time coping with this, especially considering the absence of their father. Winry tried her best to be there for the two boys that she considered her brothers, but with their mother gone they just became more and more distant. The picturesque life they had led up till then had started to crumble, and it only became worse from there on out.

Some time later, two significant things happened. One was the death of Winry's parents while they were on duty out in Ishbal, serving both Amestrians and Ishballans alike. They had been killed by an Ishballan monk known only under the alias of Scar, a man that they had saved, but whom, in his distraught and frenzied state over the crimes Amestris had committed against his people, attacked them. The second was Edward and Alphonse finding a teacher named Izumi who would show them the ways of martial arts and alchemy. The two boys went away to train under her in her hometown of Dublith. During this time, Winry was similarly engrossing herself in her training as well, training on how to create automail and on a more theoretical level, take care of patients. The Elrics' time with Izumi was short, but they were able to learn a lot from her--most importantly, in doing that, they were able to gain what they believed was necessary to enact their plan.

The plan of reviving their mother. They didn’t realize that in attempting this illegal action they were breaking the most important rule of alchemy, that of equivalent exchange: giving up the same amount for what you receive. They had all the necessary ingredients for a human body, however there is no price that can equal a soul and that ended in disaster. Edward lost one of his legs, and Al his entire body in the process but Edward gave up one of his arms to attach Alphonse’s soul to a suit of armor.

Both boys, particularly Edward, were a mess after that incident, and it was thanks to the effort of a man from the military by the name of Roy Mustang that he was finally able to snap Ed out of his depressed state. He had come searching for them believing them to be much older, and in the process found the remains of their failed attempt at human transmutation. Accompanying him was one of his subordinates, a woman by the name of Riza Hawkeye who at first Winry acted rather impertinent towards. She had come to hold some resentment towards the military as a whole, feeling them responsible for so many tragedies that had befallen their country, frightened that they were now trying to steal Ed and Al, and of course, the murder of her parents. In the end, however, after they talked Winry came to hold a great deal of admiration for the Lieutenant, and was inspired to do her best to support the Elrics, even if that meant supporting Ed in his role of dog of the military.

Thanks to that push given to him by Mustang, Edward made the decision that he would join the military, so that he and Alphonse could have access to research materials that would hopefully give them what they needed to learn how to fix their bodies. Edward got automail, and managed to learn how to control it in one year---an accomplishment that usually takes much longer. They left for the military shortly thereafter, and would visit for the occasional tune up to Ed's automail, but other than that they were dedicated to their task. As testimony to this, one of the first things they did when Ed was certified, was to burn down their house.

One day, however, the two boys return and Ed's arm is completely and utterly destroyed. Though she is pissed beyond belief, Winry and her grandmother work for three days to complete a brand new automail arm for Edward. Unfortunately Winry makes the mistake of forgetting one bolt in Edward's new automail which ends up being a big problem indeed. As far as she knows, it's partially responsible for landing Edward in the hospital after it gave out in a fight he was in.

Winry began to get more involved in the story when she went to Central to fix Ed’s automail when he was unable to come to Rizenbul. There she met Maes Hughes, a member of the military and one who had become friends with the Elric brothers. She too grows very close of him and the rest of his family and she is able to shed some of her fears on him concerning the two Elrics viewing her as nothing more than their mechanic, when for always she has considered them brothers despite their lack of blood connection. He is able to quell those fears, explaining that people like Ed and Al don't like to burden others with their troubles. This in turn helps her to be able to quell a feud happening between Edward and Alphonse, when Alphonse begins to wonder if Edward completely fabricated him and all his memories, a fear fueled by Edward's inability to communicate a fear he has long since wanted to speak with Alphonse about. The real fear, and something that Winry and her grandmother have always known, was Edward's belief that Alphonse must blame him for everything that happened.

From there the Elrics decide to pay their teacher in Dublith a visit. Seeing that Ruhr Rush Valley, the automail capitol of Amestris, is on the way, Winry insists that they take her along so that she may visit it. A thief by the name of Paninya steals Edward's state watch and Winry manages to catch her, but in typical fashion her real reason in doing so was so that she could examine her automail legs. Winry is very impressed by that handiwork and convinces Paninya to take them to her mechanic. He is a man named Dominic, and Winry pleads with him to make her his apprentice but he absolutely refuses no matter how many times she asks.

A storm brews trapping everyone in Dominic's solitary home at the worst possible time, just as his daughter-in-law starts to give birth. The bridge that serves as the fastest way to Rush Valley has been broken and cannot be fixed even my alchemical means, so Dominic leaves to take the long route and return with a doctor. Knowing that waiting so long for a doctor could be detrimental to both the health of the child and the mother, Winry takes things into her own hands and manages to safely deliver the baby, even though she only worked from theoretical knowledge. In return for doing this, Dominic hooks Winry up with another very skilled and fabulous automail mechanic in Rush Valley. His name is Garfiel, and when Edward and Alphonse continue north to Dublith, she remains behind to apprentice under him, gaining many clients and friends in the process.

The next time the Elrics pay her a visit is, when once again, Edward has heavily damaged his automail and is in need of repairs. Through them Winry meets Ling, a prince from the eastern country of Xing, and his guardians Ran Fan and Fu. Together all of them return to Central for various reasons, Winry's being that she wants to see Hughes once more. Upon returning, however, they learn of Hughes death, and how Maria Ross is currently the suspect in his murder. Winry pays a visit to Gracia Hughes and Elisia, family of Hughes in an attempt to console them and come to terms with his death as well. Edward eventually appears as well, and explains to all of them the circumstances under which Hughes died.

A series of events occurs thereafter in which Winry is uninvolved, but leads to the Elrics trying to lure Scar out in an attempt to capture him. Winry happens to overhear news of their involvement in this while out in the streets, and becomes frightened for their safety, giving chase to the two. She manages to finally reach them, Scar included just as Edward reveals that Scar was the one who killed her parents after they had saved him. Shocked and overwhelmed, Winry loses herself and attempts to kill Scar, but is stopped and protected from him by Ed, while Al drives him away. Ed remains with her for a while to console her, and after ensuring her safety returns to help Al.

Winry goes back to return to Rush Valley at the request of her clients, and at the train station makes a vow with Edward that the next time she cries at his behest, it will be from happiness. She realizes as the train rolls away, that she has fallen in love with him.

When next Winry appears with the Elrics, it is after they have traveled to the north, to the border of Drachma and Amestris. There she is essentially a hostage to keep the Elrics in line. She creates new automail for Edward, more fitting to the snowy climate of the north, and Ed and Al are upfront with her about the situation, filling her in on most of what is happening. Kimbley, the man overseeing the Elrics and Winry, is on the trail of Scar and Ed joins him. Winry too comes along under the pretense of wanting to ensure that Ed's automail worked well, but in truth she too wanted to see Scar again. When the two finally confront again, Winry treats some of his wounds, and asked him why he did what he did. Winry realizes that killing Scar would be a hollow victory, and that her parents would not want her to become a murderer; that someone has to be the one to stop the cycle of revenge and violence, so while she by no means forgives Scar, she decides to take the higher ground.

Having had a degree of closure with him, she comes up with a plan to help him escape, along with getting her out of being a hostage. Under the pretense that Scar has captured her, he uses Winry as a hostage of his own to get out of Briggs safely. He, Winry, Mei Chan, two chimeras, and eventually Al as well travel south and split up along the way. Finally in Liore even Alphonse stays behind with his father, and Winry continues with some accompaniment till she reaches her home in Rizenbul.

Edward, with two other chimeras, and Ling who has now become integrated with the homunculus Greed are there and Winry is once more filled in on what is happening. Edward tells her of the danger that is approaching this country, of the Promised Day, and advises her to take Pinako and flee. Instead Winry gives him a good whack with her wrench and tells him that he will do what needs to be done without fail. Edward and his company leave and Winry faithfully and patiently awaits them.

Before very long, however, Winry becomes a little concerned as she hears Den start to become very excited. She can only imagine that perhaps Ed was returning for something, seeing as how late it was, and so she ventures out of the house to suddenly find herself somewhere she does not recognize. Baffled she turns around, but instead of finding her own home sees a house on a hill. Having very little option, Winry enters.

Winry was similarly worried about Yuuri, and she just couldn't shake that nagging feeling of others. Two others. If she was right, then they probably had three people to keep a look out for, though honestly she would welcome just about anyone right now. Even if it wasn't a face she recognized, or exactly someone friendly, it would still lead to more answers than wandering around aimlessly as they were.

It was perhaps one of the most unsettling experiences of her life. In her travels from Drachma back to Rizenbul, Winry had seen quite a number of different cities, even a couple Ishballan havens which were incredibly rural, gatherings of a people who had lost everything. It had been such a sad sight to see these proud folk, driven away from their homes and struggling to make their ends meet against a prejudiced world. Yet there was something that made the sight before her now more dismal than that. Within the eyes of the Ishballan people she had seen hope, and determination. This place, with its lack of any sort of life, had absolutely none of that.

Winry stopped to consider both Miranda's question, and her own train of thought. She was being ridiculous, drawing unnecessarily depressing notions on whim. Right? No, perhaps not. Even if this place wasn't Death City, despite all signs pointing to it, whatever occurred here--for surely something had, was a tragedy.

For Winry, there was only one way to make sure that this place was indeed, and so she went from a walk to a run.

"I honestly am not too sure. First I want to check something and from there, well, I guess our best bet would be to try and find someone in this place." The chances of that happening weren't looking too hot, but they didn't have very many options.

Sample First-Person Post:Well it took me a bit to put this thing back together, but boy was it fun checking it out. I've never seen anything like it before, definitely not like the phones us commoners are stuck with. Still not entirely sure just how it works, but I'll figure it out eventually.

For now I guess I should figure out just what exactly this place it. [yes, Winry's priorities are a little skewed] This is a communication device, right? Are the residents of this place always so charming as to lock people in? If they were aiming to scare I'm just irritated, and have to say their sense of humor is rather poor.
