Were other resources in such great supply?

I think it depended on where you went. Most places were just islands with economies separate from the rest of the world, so each place had its own resource problems. We did come across a desert island where it hadn't rained in years and water was a very sparing thing.
The oceans themselves are ... well, you always take for granted that they're there, but they're by no means safe to sail on. Or a good drinking supply, for that matter.

I suppose a desert of water wouldn't necessarily be much different than a desert of sand.
