Amendment 3, the Marriage amendment, will be on the Utah ballot on November 2nd.

I have never seen a more misleading political campaign in my life. There are all kinds of commercials on TV, signs around town, and conservative politicians that are pushing for this amendment. But their biggest selling point is that it supposedly ONLY defines marriage as being between a man and a woman. That's all. In the TV commercial, a girl reads the "entire" amendment and then says "that's it, there's nothing else to it." Well, actually, there is a lot more to it. It reads as follows:
ARTICLE I, SECTION 29
Be it resolved by the Legislature of the State of Utah, two-thirds of all members elected to each of the two houses voting in favor thereof:
Section 1. It is proposed to enact Utah Constitution Article I, Section 29, to read:
Article I, Section 29. [Marriage.]
(1) Marriage consists only of the legal union between a man and a woman.
(2) No other domestic union, however denominated, may be recognized as marriage or given the same or substantially equivalent legal effect. That second part about "legal effect" is the part that I am concerned about. Of course, it's pretty vague, which makes it easier to misinterpret. This is the part of the amendment that writes discrimination into the constitution of our state. This is the part of the amendment that denies basic rights to a same sex couple - rights that ANYONE in this country should be entitled to, regardless of religious or moral belief.

But the folks who drafted this amendment don't want you to know about that.

VOTE NO ON AMENDMENT 3!!!!
