Autumn Chapter 4: A Warning
Days pass by and suddenly we were at the 11th onth of the year. Haruka’s birthday was coming soon. Unfortunately, her wish to celebrate this year’s birthday with her father isn’t going to be fulfilled, for Henry passed away two weeks before today. Neither Haruka nor her mother were surprised when Henry left that day, because after all, they were prepared for it, and had spent all his remaining days having fun as a family. They had let him go with a peaceful smile on their faces.
“Na Haruka” I broke the silence between us as we took an afternoon a stroll around the usual park “Hn?” she replied shortly “Is there anything you want right now?” I asked, looking at her. She stayed silent for a while, and replied with a shake of her head “Not really” she spoke out, turning to me and stared straight into my eyes. I nodded my head slowly. “Is there any reason as to why you’re asking?” she wanted to know. I smiled at her and said “It’s almost your birthday you know” “Ah” she finally realized today’s date and smiled embarrassedly.
“You really shouldn’t forget things like this you know” I ruffled her hair with my free hand. “Jaa, how about I take you out for dinner? It’s been a while since we ate together someplace nice” I said with a hint of guilt in my voice. She flashed her sweet smile to me “It’s not your fault…I know you’re busy. I’m happy with the way we are now…you’re still always by my side despite all the things you have to do” I felt my cheeks grow hot and faked a small cough to hide my embarrassment. “So…it’s a date?” I returned to the original topic. She nodded and I grinned happily.
“What are you planning to buy her?” Yuto asked curiously the next day. Chinen nodded vigorously beside him, obviously wanting to know the answer as well. I smirked mysteriously, keeping myself silent and teasing my two best friends. “Fine, don’t tell us…it’s not important anyway” Chinen puffed his cheeks like a kid whose candy just got stolen. I chuckled at his childishness and gave in. “Nothing that special. Just a bracelet” “E~h boring” Ohgo passed by, obviously eavesdropping “specially made and has our names carved on it” I finished my cut sentence, making her stop her tracks right there and then. “Why is it that my boyfriend isn’t as romantic as you are?” she rolled her eyes at her boyfriend “Hey!” Yuto protested, getting up from his seat. Ohgo laughed “I was just kidding Yuto. You know I still love you” Chinen and I faked a gag from our seats hearing her say that while Yuto just blushed from where he was standing. “I’m getting it from the shop a day before her birthday, they promised me it’ll be done by then” I informed them, trying to get rid of the cheesiness of Ohgo Suzuka’s line from my head. “Haruka-chan will definitely love it” Chinen grinned. “I hope so” I shared him my doubt.
I calculated all the things I’ve planned to do on Haruka’s birthday as I took the road back home after practice. However, since the practice was pretty intense that day, my mind went a bit hazy and I stopped my tracks, taking a deep breath to get my focus back. It was then when I heard a shuffling sound form behind my back. I froze on the spot and sharpened my hearing. Silence greeted me yet I didn’t continue to step forward still very alert of my surroundings. After half a minute or so of silence but the sound of the chilly wind, I decided I must’ve just been hearing things and began to walk again.
I didn’t rush my steps since my body felt exhausted and the night was peaceful, the sky clear and the stars smiling brightly at me. I felt I could drop on the road and just sleep right then and there, I was starting to drag my feet as exhaustion started to take control of my limbs Tap tap tap heard Am I hearing things? There’s definitely more than one sound of footsteps, which means one of them isn’t my own quickened my pace, but not too much and I heard the might-be-person speed up as well, falling into rhythm with me. I took an abrupt stop and turned around. No-one was behind me. A chill went down my spine. I was sure that was not some retarded thing like a ghost. That was definitely a person. I counted to three inside my head and made a dash towards home.
The experience that night didn’t stop in just one day. I felt someone following me almost every day for the whole week. I tried to get it out of my head, trying to be positive and just hope that the person was not some stalker but just a paparazzi who had too much time on his hands. However, something inside me says that the one following me is much more dangerous than I wished he could be.
“You look pale” Yuto told me as we headed for the school gate “Is something bothering you?” he looked concerned. I shook my head “Nah, I’m probably just tired from all then busyness this week” “By the way, you’re taking the bracelet today right?” Chinen asked. “Yeah” I smiled “Do you want to come?” I asked, knowing him very well and saw his eyes light up. “Definitely!” “Well then tag along now” I led the way.
“I had expected something great, but that bracelet is better than I thought!” Chinen ssaid as he eyed the bag in my hand that held the now gift-wrapped bracelet. “I’m glad you think so” “What do you think, Yuto?” “I’m thinking I should give Suzu something like that once in a while” he grinned goofily. Good thinking mate” he punched my shoulders lightly. “Thanks” we stopped at the intersection “Jaa na” I waved them goodbye and we parted ways.
The street that led to my house was as deserted as usual. I walked in my normal pace and breathed in the crisp air of autumn. I sighed happily as I pictured the smile on Haruka’s face when she opens the gift tomorrow. I got home without a thing troubling my mind or bothering my heart.
I dropped myself onto my comfy bed and lay face-up, staring at the while ceiling, still having a visualization of my plan for tomorrow. My cellphone rang and I retrieved it from my pocket, opening the message that was received. It was from an unknown address.
You’re gonna regret going tomorro I gritted my teeth. I didn’t know why but I felt deep hatred inside the message. This person was not giving me a false threat.
