Autumn Chapter 3: Grey Clouds Vanish After the Rain
“Haruka, I found it” Haruka snapped her head towards me “Really?” she lit up. I nodded, showing her the address I had written on a piece of paper. “It’s not that far away, though it sure took quite a long time to find” I stated “You’re sure you want to do this right?” she nodded with determination. “Jaa ikou” I placed a copy of the address before heading to the door.
I knocked the door that read ‘Room 407’ softly and heard a deep voice answer “Come in” I slid the door open and went inside. “Ryosuke-kun” the man on the bed said with a hint of surprise in his voice “How did you know I was here?” “I have my ways, Sir” I grinned, although quite shocked at how thin and frail the man had become in such a short time. It’s only been two weeks “I told you to call me by my name, didn’t I” he chuckled. “You’ve come to see me? I’m very happy” he let out a quite dry laugh, as if he wished for something more.
“It wasn’t just me who wanted to see you, S-Henry” I smiled “Wh-“ “How are you feeling Otou-san?” Haruka finally stepped into the room, a big bouquet of flower in her hands. “Haru-ka?” Henry said in disbelief, his eyes watering. Haruka set the flowers on the table and hugged her father. “I can’t believe I wasted so much time loathing you” she cried on her father’s shoulder “if only I knew” she sobbed “I’m so sorry” she wailed.
“Haruka” Henry spoke up, his voice thick “I’m the one who should be apologizing” he chuckled softly as a tear ran down his cheek. “I never expected for you to come and find me” he added as Haruka released the embrace. “I couldn’t leave things as it was…not after I knew the truth” she shook her head slightly, her lips quivering. She took a seat on the stool beside the bed, holding her father’s hand.
Henry turned to me “You don’t know how thankful I am” he smiled at me. I looked down to hide my embarrassment. I shook my head slowly, still not daring to raise my head or speak a word. “Ah” Henry suddenly said, his voice low and sad as he realized something “Natsuki……she’s…still angry isn’t she?” Haruka visibly stiffened at the statement. Henry sighed “Well, it’s not like an illness can erase one’s past mistakes in another’s eyes” he joked sadly “I’ve tried my best” he encouraged himself. I gazed at him sadly. I saw Haruka gripping Henry’s hand tighter and Henry smiled thankfully at her. A lump formed in my throat and I excused myself from the room.
I took deep breaths as I leaned on the wall outside the room, my eyes closed as I calmed myself down. The sound of footsteps startled me and I snapped my eyes open and turned to the source. My jaw threatened to drop as I saw the figure of Haruka’s mother making her way towards the room. I never thought she’d actually show up. From what Haruka told me, Akiyama Natsuki completely waved off the letter, still not wavering from what she believed happened 8 years ago. I bowed my head slightly to her as she passed by me and smiled in spite of myself as she went inside.
It was obvious that Haruka’s mother now believed what her ex-husband had said that day.
The sound of joyful chatter could be heard from Henry’s room not too long after and I grinned happily from where I stood.
