Summer Chapter 5: Thrills, Screams, and Sweetness
“Ikou” I took Haruka-chan’s hand as soon as she stepped out “Ne Yamada-kun, are you sure you’re fully healed?” I smiled at the girl walking alongside me “Don’t worry…it’s been six days already. Thanks to you, I was fine by the next day…I told you so, didn’t I?” I ruffled her hair and she blushed. I grinned. “C’mon. We’ll miss the train”
We rode the Odakyu Line and got off a Yomiuriland-mae Station, then took the bus to get to Yomiuriland. The line was short since we arrived at 11, an hour after the park opened. I paid for two One-Day Passports and we got in quickly. “So, what do you want to ride first?” I asked Haruka-chan, letting her see the map. “Let’s go to the farthest part of the park first then finish off at a ride close to the entrance” she said and we set off to the White Canyon, a wooden roller coaster located northeast from the park entrance. The farthest attraction was actually the Crazy Zoom and Crazy Boom, but we both agreed to pass those rides and go straight to the White Canyon instead.
As we reached the place, I stood perplexed at the structure in front of me. I was quite the sucker for roller coasters after all, but Haruka-chan was a girl who adores thrilling rides and I just couldn’t tell her that. “Uwa~ I’m so excited!” She looked at me, her blue eyes shining in expectation, very adorable. “C’mon” I led her to the waiting line. As our turn came, I took a deep breath and braced myself for the ride. We took the seat at the tail, and my heart was pounding very hard since I was very nervous. Haruka-chan on the other hand seems to be impatient for the ride to begin. It was as if she could be jumping up and down on her seat if there weren’t anyone else around. Seeing that, I couldn’t help but let out a soft laugh and I felt the nervousness begin to disappear. The White Canyon wasn’t as bad as I thought it was, and I actually enjoyed it.
“Now for the next one!” She took my hand unconsciously and led the way. It was cute to see the usually timid Haruka-chan so excited and I smiled widely. We walked to the other side of the park and finally arrived at the SL Coaster. Still hand-in-hand, we got on the ride. SL Coaster was even less thrilling than the White Canyon, and as a result I was not bothered by it.
“Let’s go in the Haunted House then afterwards the Bandit” she smiled excitedly at me. Hearing ‘Bandit’ made me gulp. That was the most thrilling ride in the park, based on what I have heard and I guess I just had to brace myself for it. And so, we went into the Masuda-Okada’s Haunted Mansion with my mind full of the Bandit.
The darkness of the haunted house made me come back to my senses and I felt Haruka-chan’s grip on my hand tighten. “You’re actually not good with haunted houses are you?” I asked her. “Um..maa” she said softly beside me, the excitement in her voice still evident but was mixed with worry. “It’s okay, I’ll be with you the whole time.&rdquo Good thing I’m not afraid of haunted houses thought to myself.
And so, our journey began. The atmosphere in the haunted house was very dark and damp. It was made to be cold, and it fitted the air of spookiness perfectly. We walked slowly forward, and I heard Haruka-chan’s whimper and I held her hand tighter, trying to calm her. We reached the first door and I opened it unsurely. We walked in and Haruka-chan’s scream filled the air as the first surprise popped out of nowhere. She hugged my whole arm in fright and I blushed madly Thank god it’s dark imagined how embarrassing it would be if she saw how scarlet my face was.
“S-sorry” She stuttered. She started to pull away and my free arm shot out and stopped her. “Just stay like this” I said softly. “O-okay” it was dark and I couldn’t see it, but I was pretty sure Haruka-chan’s cheeks were as red as mine right now.
“Thank god it’s over” Haruka-chan breathed out in relief as we exited the haunted mansion. She let go of my arm, her cheeks tinted pink just as I thought it would be. “Why do you still go in even though you’re scared?” I asked her, curious. She screamed everytime a ghost popped up but seemed to really enjoy it. “Because it’s actually fun” she said to me, grinning. I couldn’t stop myself and ruffled her hair again. “Now let’s go to the Bandit” she turned away, trying to hide her blush.
“Wait” she stopped her tracks. I headed to the vending machine nearby and bought juice. “Here” I handed it to her “You must be thirsty after all that screaming” “Thanks” she drank as we walked “Here, Yamada-kun, you must be thirsty too” she held out the juice to me. I took it and drank the remaining content and tossed it into the recycle bin we passed by. “The Bandit” Haruka-chan said in awe as we reached the waiting line. I stared at the rid Oh dear thought and readied myself.
“Yamada-kun, daijoubu?” Haruka-chan asked me when we got off. “Yeah, I just need to calm down a bit.” “Shall we have some lunch there? It’s way past noon” she suggested the ‘Twinkle’ on the map after I had calmed down. “Sure.” I agreed “Ah, sorry, could you go ahead? I need to go to the bathroom” “Okay” she said and we separated halfway while I headed for the bathroom.
I used the bathroom as an excuse and headed out to the Stone House we passed by a few moments ago instead. It might be a bit lame but I just realized that today was the 30th f August, which marks a month since I first confessed to Haruka-chan when a beautiful silver necklace with a sapphire hanging on the display of the shop caught my eye. I went inside and bought it without hesitance and asked for it to be wrapped for a gift I’ll find the right time to give this to he I put it inside my backpack and walked the path to the Twinkle.
After some fine Chinese food at the Twinkle, we headed for the other rides. Time flew by as we rode on Wave Swinger, Loop Coaster MOMOnGA, went inside Miracle Wan Room, rode the Space Jet and Sky Cycle, got on a Classic Car, and tried the Frog Hopper.
“I can’t believe it’s already five” I said as I read the clock. The park closes at six, one more hour. “Let’s ride the Ferris Wheel” Haruka-chan said. “Let’s get some takoyaki first” I said, a bit hungry from all the excitement. She giggled “If you say so”
After eating takoyaki, we finally rode the Ferris Wheel and rose slowly. “Uwa~ Fujisan da!” Haruka-chan got up from beside me and stared out the window. “Haruka” I called out “Hn?” she turned to me, looking a bit surprised that I called her without ‘chan’. I grinned “I’ll call you that from now on if you don’t mind” “Sure” she smiled sweetly “Um…” she hesitated “Eto….R-Ryosuke” she spoke out softly and blushed. Hearing my name coming out from Haruka’s mouth, my stomach did a somersault and I smiled widely. “By the way,” I searched my backpack and retrieved the gift I bought before “for you. It’s a celebration of our one month anniversary.” “Eh?” “Open it” I said.
“It’s beautiful, thank you” she turned to me when she saw it. “Want me to put it on for you?” I stood up and took it from her hand “Eh?” I ignored her and stepped behind her. She lifted her hair up and I put the necklace around her bare neck. “There” she turned around and I was surprised by the closeness of our faces. Judging from the look on her face, Haruka was as well.
I leaned closer and planted a sweet kiss on her lips. The sudden halt of the Ferris Wheel broke our kiss and I blushed. “Sorry I was so sudden” I told the red faced Haruka. “Nnn.” She shook her head slightly “it’s okay” she said softly, looking at me shyly. I patted her head, too embarrassed to kiss her again and sat back down. “Come” I patted the space next to me and Haruka sat there.
“By the way, I still haven’t met your mother. How is she?” I tried to make a conversation to release the embarrassment after the kiss. “Oh, she’ll be back from her trip to Seoul in two weeks” Haruka responded. We then chatted until the ride was over.
Calling it a day, we went out the park and rode the train back home. I was staring out the window of the train when I felt a weight on my shoulder. I turned to see that Haruka had fallen asleep. I stared at her sweet and peaceful face for a few seconds, smiled, and kissed the top of her head.
What a wonderful da I patted my girlfriend’s head softly.
