So upon stumbling on a comment by a fellow livejournal member on this blog that hasn't been updated for a very long time, I figure it might be a good time to update those who follow, have followed, or simply stumbled on this little treasure trove of movie reviews.
To answer everyone's question, yes, I'm still alive, as evident with these very words right now. Yes, I still watch movies with a critical eye, with my favourite movie last year being Australia's Animal Kingdom; The Social Network being a close second.
So far this year, my favourite film has been 50/50 and my most recent trip to the cinema was the recent remake of Footloose, which was surprising in some ways, disappointing in others.
The reason why this blog has not been updated was life: working at something you may have heard of called Blockbuster to finance my education was a pleasant experience and this kept me very busy, but I have since moved on and access to certain films is very difficult where I am. You see, after renting 10 movies a week and watching most of them at no charge, paying for films can be a little difficult. That and I have a moral dilemma in regards to streaming and illegal downloads: 1) in that they were the reason the video store clerk is now extinct, a job that I felt greatly contributed to society, believe it or not, and 2) that understanding the effort that goes into filmmaking, downloading something just feels wrong. I downloaded only once in my life and when I watched the movie, I could feel nothing for the film because the voice of guilt speaking softly in my ear the whole time.
Now, if you have a chance to Google, Google the words "Banff, Alberta" and you'll see beautiful images of great mountains, tall green trees, and majestic ski hills.
What you won't see is the distinct lack of accessibility to cinema. There is one movie store, which I don't rent at because it would develop into an out-of-control expense, and one grungy movie theatre.
There are also two libraries that I have employed here, who impressed me at first with recent titles such as: Jane Eyre, Rango, True Grit, Barney's Version, but the selection can only be so large before you've seen everything they have to offer.
At any rate, my hope is that if you've stumbled on this blog, feel free to browse around at your leisure -- though livejournal has made some mods I can see that make it now impossible to search my directory of reviews.
Lastly, if you know anyone who is looking for a new hobby, suggest doing what I did here. It's fun, it's challenging, and it forces them to look at things with a critical eye. I've shot my fair share of Nazi zombies on Call of Duty and it isn't nearly as much fun as everyone says it is.
Okay, maybe it's a little fun, but I digress...
Till I write again or find the time,
Albert
