French Singers - Chanteuse Françaises PART I

Jun 22, 2008 11:29

I'm French Canadian. While I am proud to be French and proud that it is my first language I barely listen to French music. I find that in Québec, while we do have several very talented and original musicians and artists, none of the French music produced really appeal to me. And, like everywhere, we also have the very not good mainstream/pop music that I really, really don't like.
After being in Korea for almost a year now, speaking English everyday, being surrounded by English and Korean speaking people, and only hearing/speaking French for about one hour every Sunday with my mom, it is with a little shame that I say that I'm losing my French.
I never thought you could say that about your first language, but it is a fact. Of course, I will never lose it completely, but whenever I speak French now, I feel weird, I feel like all my words are coarse, I constantly search for my words only thinking of English ones. Hell, I THINK in English.
So maybe it is why I fell a need to reconnect with my language.

Plus, I not only like trying new things, I also like RETRYING things that I had previously disliked (whether it's food or music or art...I'm pretty adament about not liking sports though...)

So, not one to be discouraged by my slight dislike of French music, I looked around and found some artists that I REALLY like. Some of them I knew before, but only listened to them on a very rare basis. I decided to give them a serious listening session and boy am I glad I did!
So here I am to share them with you. They are all female singers, because somehow I am most of the time attracted by female voices.

Ironically though, they are all from France, not Québec.
Well, I said I was somewhat proud to speak French, not that I was a hardcore patriot. I never quite understood that feeling anyway.

CAMILLE

Behind the cut you will find a (very) small biography, pictures and songs to listen to. If you are very interested in one of her album, and cannot find it/afford it I am willing to upload them for you so you can have a good listen. Then, if you really, really like it, please buy it.

Camille (Dalmais) is a 30 years old French singer born in Paris.
She studied ballet and has an interest in Bossa Nova music and American musicals.
She speaks English fluently (her mother in an English teacher) and you can find English songs, or songs containing English lyrics on her albums.

In Le fil, the "fil" (thread) is a drone that pertains throughout the whole album over which Camille sings. She also uses her voice as an instrument to find innovative sounds.

I really, really like her. She is original, but still accessible. She seems to have so much fun when she sings and perform that I can't help, but be enchanted by her music.

I'm also a big fan of the 2007 Pixar's movie "Ratatouille". I was very happy to discover that the lovely theme song "Le festin" was sung by her.
