It hurt so much.
The pain in her stomach.
The twisting in her heart.
She was hooked up to every machine one could think of, and in the distance of her mind, she heard the bleeps and the voices around her. She could feel it inside, something was horribly wrong. Her child was struggling to live, and at this point, so was she in spite of the fact that one of the two things she lived for was no longer with her. She clenched her fist and opened her eyes, but they didn't want to stay open. She fought the overwhelming urge to go back to sleep, to slide into unconsciousness and let the black wash over her and comfort her.
--I have to keep fighting...--
She heard more muffled voices around her.
“...close...just a little more...”
In the fading light of her mind, the last thing she hear was a baby's cry.
Then she gave in to the merciful black.
Nashi lie in bed, her body turned to face the window and away from the door in her room. She still felt heavily sedated, slow, sluggish, out of step with her reality. She was still in emotional shock, not only from the loss of her husband, but from the uncertainy of her child's well-being. It had been 24 hours and she had gotten no word. She was still fighting the sedatives they had given her and now she was winning - she felt more awake than she had since she collapsed in front of the King. Even so, the fact that she was awake only made her painfully aware of her loss. Akuma was her life, her partner, her soulmate. He was her everything and now he was gone. How was she going to deal with the emptiness inside?
Dr. Izaku entered her room and quietly closed the door. The fire that had always been inside of Nashi, at least in his eyes, seemed to have just been extinguished. He hadn't even been there for the entirely of Nashi's event - as soon as Nashi came in, there was another emergency on the other side of the hospital, for there was a Tournament match that had gotten out of hand and there were injuries and casualties right and left from it. As soon as he had the chance to get away, he rushed to Nashi's side.
“Nashi...how are you feeling?”
“Where is my baby?” She didn't move, and her voice sounded distant and lifeless.
Dr. Izaku paused before he continues speaking. “He didn't survive, Nashi. The cord was wrapped around his neck.”
[He.]
“A...boy...?” Nashi shivered. Her world grew colder by the second. “I heard him...crying...he was crying....” Nashi sounded quietly disbelieving but as her words drifted off, they too were tinged with an unbearable sense of defeat.
Dr. Izaku nodded in response to her question, but she didn't see him. He then walked towards the bed and put a gentle hand on her shoulder. “I am sorry, truly I am, about your losses. Akuma was a good man, loved by everyone, none so much as you. We are all going to miss him, and if there's anything I can do...”
“I want to go home.”
“Are you sure that's the right thing...”
“I [said] that I want to go home. There are things I need to finish up there.”
“If you need another place to stay...”
“I don't [want] another place to stay. Lake Shingo will be allright. When will I go home?”
“I wouldn't recommend...”
It was now that Nashi finally turned around to face Dr. Izaku, a cold glare in her eyes. “Why do I have to keep repeating myself for you? What part of 'when will I go home' are you failing to comprehend?”
Dr. Izaku was a little taken back by the harshness of Nashi's words, but he knew what Nashi was capable of in a highly emotional state, so he backed off and answered her question. “We'd like to keep you one more day. Then we'll get you back home.”
“Fine.” Nashi turned back around towards the window. “Please go.”
It had occurred to Dr. Izaku that maybe he should have said more in the way of comforting things to Nashi, but it only seemed as if his words would fall on deaf ears right now. It was still too soon for her. He nodded and left, the [click] of the door as he left being the loudest sound in the room. Nashi closed her eyes tightly. For once in her life, she felt nowhere near as confident as she sounded.
