Orientation

The subject of love and everything in between is such a debatable subject with someone like Beatrice.

Who the Hell do you think you are, talking like that? Showing off this fraud that love is beautiful when in the end it's filth. I'll turn you into maggots and then we'll see whether he still loves you. I'll show you that he's only had his eyes on your flesh!

Throughout the course of the series, it is said that Beatrice did indeed share some sort of relationship with Kinzo Ushiromiya - or, rather, that he constantly pursued her. She's referred to as his 'mistress', and it is said that he did at once ask for her to marry him quite a few times. Though, there are scenes where she shows some pity for him, and while she may or may not have had some feelings for Kinzo ( at least, it's obvious that she doesn't completely hate him, rather - despite what she does to him shortly after, the two do share some conversation with one another ), she can be indifferent or downright cruel to him - burning him to death or even letting him get eaten by goats without any hesitation.

However, it is also hinted that Beatrice may have been abused, and perhaps even sexually harassed by Kinzo as well.

Though, it is shown that Beatrice is indeed bitter towards the subject of love; going in a rage during a few scenes in the series when spoken to about it for a short period of time. Although there's scenes when she openly says crude things about regarding her more personal life - this does not change the fact that something that has not been yet revealed has happened to her. Though, many things regarding her character as a whole is subtle during the course of the series so far. Kinzo did indeed lock her inside of a mansion, and there is a possibility that he might've kept her where Eva had found the gold in Episode 3 (there is a bed in the room, and quite a few other things).

However, she does ask eventually during a certain scene;

"Why am I unable to love?"

Uncertain, bitter, yet, there's still a part of her that may or may not want to trust in that emotion yet again. The scenes regarding Shannon could be hinted as a bit of jealousy - Furniture being able to love and that love being able to grow while Beatrice was betrayed by the person who pursued her and supposedly cared about her.

Yet, throughout the series we see her develop so much as a character in general. Though, Beatrice is nothing but a child. She selfish, possessive, and even naive in some of her own actions. Yet, throughout the course of canon it is obvious that she is heterosexual. She is not blunt with her own emotions, but Beatrice is a character of subtle words - or rather, everything about her a mystery. Reading between the lines. Her views on love may be the same way. Though she does fall for a character in canon, she has never blatantly stated to him that she loves him.

Why was I born? Why do I love him....?

Without love, the truth cannot be seen. Without love, we can't do anything. And it through that love and development that Beatrice gradually changes into the character that she is now.

Appearance
Seemingly elegant, but all the same, she can appear malicious at first. One look, or movement from Beatrice can make it easily known that she's dangerous. Though, from first glance, one wouldn't be able to tell that she was a witch.

However, despite the elegance that she carries, Beatrice can be anything but, when someone sets her off, or she gets carried away with herself. Even if she's good at deceiving others, the expressions that Beatrice can carry at times can make her emotions obvious.

She does have two different outfits; the dress she wears in the portrait of her. This is something that she wears for most of the series - the dress bearing different patterns of wings. The wings are something of a repeating theme for those in the Ushiromiya family, despite that she does not carry the blood of the family. It's nothing less then fitting for the second Master of Rokkenjima and the Ushiromiya family. In this outfit, she carries a golden pipe with her constantly. This is the source of her powers.

The other outfit she wears is something that's seen when she's actually roaming around on Rokkenjima as a 'human piece'. When she actually speaks with other family members and servants (save for the Battler she plays against in her game), she's seen wearing this.

Her hair is often tied in a bun, however, there is a time in canon when her hair is undone. Her appearances with her hair down make her appear to be much younger

She also wears the ring that only the current head of the Ushiromiya Family may wear.

Abilities
Beatrice bears the title of Golden Witch. She upholds her reputation as being the alchemist to the Ushiromiya Family - being able to create gold upon will. Of course, she's a witch. Creating gold from no where is really nothing to her.

As an Endless Witch, Beatrice can kill and revive a life or object as many times as she desires. Despite this being used to create happiness for others in the past, Beatrice has been known to use these powers for evil in the past.

Anything said in red is the truth. However, the red can be either used to her advantage, but if used wrongly, this can also lead to a disadvantage. Though, the red isn't absolute.

She commands many demons and can summon them once her power regains the strength required for such a feat. She also has control of 'Furniture' or 'Servants' to do her bidding. After all, Beatrice isn't one to do most tasks with her own hands - or in her case, with her own magic, unless she is whimsical enough to carry out the task by herself.

Personality
Dangerously Genre Savy. Tsundere. Evil is Stylish. Foe Yay. Lotus Eater Machine. Troll. Moe.

Cold, temperamental, fickle, cocky, cruel, and stubborn. But at the same time, she's childish, selfish, emotional, and at times, even naive to her own emotions. Beatrice is indeed complex.

At first glance, Beatrice seems nothing but twisted and cruel; using others for her own goals and playing with human's lives as if they were nothing but toys (but, if you can fix a toy once it is broken, wouldn't you have the courage to break it over and over again?). However, part of Beatrice's personality is the fact that she can be indeed deceiving. Beatrice doesn't tend to think before she goes through with what motives she may have, and this can lead to her own downfall.

Though, she is indeed known as a Great Witch. She carries the elegance and dignity that then Golden Witch is known to have to others that may call to her. And in her words, she's 'merciful to those who respect her, and brutal to those who do not'. She tends to act friendly to those who do indeed show respect for her. For example; in Episode 2 when Shannon had helped Beatrice, and vice versa, the two would sit down and have tea as if they had been friends for a long time. Though this later appeared as though she had only been using Shannon for her own goals, she had given Shannon presents, and had even openly spoken to Shannon about herself.

Though, she is a witch. She won't hesitate to play tricks or pranks on others, if only for entertainment purposes.

However, chances are that she will not make herself known, or show herself to others without wanting something in return. Whether it's something to aid her, or something that will amuse her later on.

However, if there is one thing she does tend to show annoyance towards, it's to others that completely deny her or ignore her very existence. And again, she tends to show agitation towards those who do not show respect towards her. She is after all, alchemist of the Ushiromiya Family and the one who currently holds the title of Endless Witch. Beato is definitely not a force to be reckoned with. Again, she can be cruel. She won't hesitate to act against someone who challenges her. - Even if it is said later on that she does not enjoy killing or torturing others, reviving someone after death isn't a challenge for her.

That is another part of her personality. She can lie without any problem. Though it has been proven in Episode 5 that she did not enjoy killing others over and over again, she had repeated many times before then that she had no problem with torturing others, because it was enjoyable.

She might act as a dignified witch in front of some, but to people like her Teacher, they see a much different side of her. For example, when Battler refuses to speak with her, or face her in their game, Virgilia sees her visibly showing her frustrations in an manner that very few would see. She shows a side that is completely different from the dignified and elegant witch that human's tend to see ('rolling their head around a table in frustration', or asking her Teacher what she should do to make Battler accept her once more).

She can also be quite slow. Even if it has not been proven if she is actually the murderer in each arc - the ways the murders were carried out were extremely brutal. Whether it was tearing the victims faces off, or taking out others organs and filling their stomachs with candies - she appears to be without mercy at first. When Battler finally confronts her about this, she acts as if a child is being punished; not knowing how to react, and having trouble realizing why he could be so angry. As said earlier, if a toy can be fixed after being broken, wouldn't a child want to break it over and over again? The same could be said with human lives. Aren't things fine, as long as they can be revived again?

However, every murder had been on a whim, if only to show that it was definitely a witch that could have committed the crimes.

Despite having the reputation of being cruel to others - there are times when she can be selfless to those that she considers close (as rare as those moments seem to be). However, she is not often vocal about her own goals, and this again, can lead to others misunderstanding her own motives.

Though, she is indeed deceiving, and at times, clever. In Episode 3, she had almost completely tricked Battler into thinking that she had fought to redeem herself as a 'good witch', when in reality, most of the good deeds she had done was nothing more to make him believe that witches indeed do exist.

Despite being known as a great witch, it's obvious she has several flaws to her personality. She tends to be emotional in a negative way - visibly growing angry or frustrated when something doesn't go her way. As said before, her goals are more then often misinterpreted, and her plans backfire against her.

Though, it's obvious that there is times when she shows affection for the one's she considers precious, or close to her. For example, she had helped Maria's stuffed animal gain an actual, living body. She does tend to playfully tease and joke around with those she considers friends as well.

Despite the fact that she can lie quite easily, there are times when her emotions are easy to read. Though he is her opponent, it's obvious that she has fondness for Battler. She is often seen asking Ronove how he might be doing, or asking how to cheer him up, if she's told that he's upset. It's through those scenes that we see a much more silly side of her personality. There's even a scene where Battler refers to Beatrice as a 'tsundora'.

Keep in mind though, she is stubborn when it comes to her own pride. She won't admit or show any sign of weakness easily. Rather, even if something is painful for her, she won't admit to it.

She can be quite awkward when it comes to actually showing affection towards those she likes. During the White Day Filler Chapter, she had attempted to give Battler chocolates, while gloating that she had made the chocolates, despite that being a lie. Battler refused these chocolates, and she became jealous and bitter, threatening to hurt her own servants for what had happened.

She enjoys things like tea parties and sweets quite a bit. If there is anything Beatrice tries to prevents, it is boredom. After all, boredom is the one of the only poisons that can kill a witch. But, if her existence is completely denied, this can also lead to her demise.

At the point in cannon she will be played from, she has given up hope in achieving what miracle she hoped to achieve through Battler.

This is perhaps one of the most significant development in her character at this point. Although she wants nothing more then her death (her last challenge to Battler before going into a comatose state could be called a suicide attempt), at the same time, she wants Battler to finally end the game. Although it's very subtle, when a character tells her that Beatrice took Battler's family away from him - she appears to look guilty, and upset at the accusation, if only for a moment. However, she does not deny the fact either.

Canon History

There are some who seek to find happiness for the entirety of their lives.

Beatrice is one of those people. Someone who sacrificed the right to have a happy ending to meet someone she loved. Someone who knew the consequences of being an Endless Witch when they asked to have power.

Yet, despite this tragic fate that seems to be set for her--

The only thing she desires is that said happiness.

Beatrice was not the name she had in the past- rather, the name Beatrice is granted to those who gain the powers of an Endless Witch. This type of witch has the power to revive something over and over again - whether it’s a human, or an item. However, the powers aren’t something that all witches can gain easily.

There is one scene where Virgilia (Beatrice’s teacher) repairs a broken vase with her powers, but shortly afterwards, the vase breaks again. When Beatrice asks her why, Virgilia replies that ‘it seems that I could not make the vase forget its own fate. It was only repaired for a short while.’

Despite that Beatrice only gained that name when she became a witch; her real name has not been revealed yet.

Her past is only hinted in the story so far. However, from what we can gather in the story, Virgilia, one of the past Beatrice’s, had taught her magic - and instead of using the Endless Magic to bring people happiness like it was supposed to, Beatrice used that magic during her eventual game for the sake of killing others; not realizing what the worth of that life she would throw away so easily was.

Throughout the course of Umineko’s story, you see her mentioned again and again as the ‘witch of the forest’. Kinzo Ushiromiya - the head of the wealthy Ushiromiya family - tells his children to never wander into the forest, because the of the witch living inside of the forest. In actuality, a human was living inside of a hidden mansion located deep within Rokkenjima’s forest - a place where Beatrice resided when she was human.

Rokkenjima is a small island located in Japan - Kizno owns it as his own private home with his four children. It’s one of the only settings of the story.

However, the Beatrice living inside of the mansion at the time did not have her powers; rather, she didn’t even know who she was.

She was a mere human.

According to Beatrice, Kinzo had summoned her using black magic, and even though he had little magic flowing through his veins, she answered his summoning even though it had been such a slim chance. It was revealed that because of Beatrice, he had been able to receive so much gold - but at the price of his own soul. Upon meeting with the witch, he had fallen in love with her, despite the fact that he married someone else. However, it is said that it was an arranged marriage, and he might not have loved his wife to begin with.

The next time he had summoned her he sealed her inside of a human body, and locked her up inside of a mansion. Though the rumor was that Beatrice had been his lover, the story has not officially clarified that. Though, he did court her over and over again, Beatrice never agreed to take his hand in marriage. As a result of this, Kinzo locked her inside of the mansion and told the young woman that she would not be released until she agreed to marry him.

In order to prevent Beatrice from escaping the residence, Kinzo told her that the wolves in the forest would surely get to her.

So, she never left on her own.

She would often ask Kinzo and the servants that worked there who she was, but would never receive an answer.

Years later, Rosa (one of Kinzo’s children) had wandered in the woods after a fight with her family, and had somehow found the hidden mansion. It was there that she found Beatrice.

And though Rosa was scared of her at first (because of the rumored forest-witch), she quickly found out that Beatrice was completely innocent - and Beatrice would become excited easily at the talk of things that were outside of the mansion. That is to say, if one were to meet the human Beatrice, and the witch Beatrice, then there would be no similarities at all besides physical appearances.

Knowing that this person was completely harmless, Rosa took Beatrice outside of her home. The witch had been cautious, not knowing if it was dangerous of not, but followed behind the young girl like a duckling would to its mother-and Rosa, who had noticed that the sun had begun to set (and knowing the dangers of the forest at night)-decided to try to take a shortcut back to the harbor, and tried to climb down a cliff leading to the beach with Beatrice.

Due to the difficulty of climbing down a cliff with her dress and heels, Beatrice missed a step, fell off the cliff, and landed to her death on the beach. Her soul finally separated from the human flesh that had become a cage and had trapped her soul. She then finally regained all her memories again as a witch. But this time, most of her powers were lost, and she could hardly maintain a form.

So, she took another form-

That of a golden butterfly.

After that, some of the servants of the Ushiromiya had began to say that they saw a golden butterfly fluttering around the mansion at night - but they must never, ever chase after it, but respect it instead. After all, there wasn’t a servant (or ‘furniture’, as some call themselves) that didn’t know about the second master of the island (Beatrice)-who didn’t know about the person in the enormous portrait in the main room of the mansion.

Sometimes, servants would claim to hear footsteps in the middle of the night, or they would see a light go on that had been off previously.

The rule is to always, always respect her. There was a servant in the mansion once that didn’t believe in Beatrice, and had chased one of the butterflies - and as a result, had been injured shortly after being hired in the manor.

Legend of the Golden Witch
❛I pray from the bottom of my heart that tonight turns out to be an intellectual, yet elegant night.❜

It’s not to say that Kinzo didn’t have plans to bring her back - after all, he already knew quite a bit about Black Magic, and summoning different beings. He didn’t have an ounce of magic in his veins, though, and this proved to be extremely difficult. It could be that he created a riddle to bring her back. Yet, it's been said that this riddle could have very well been written by Beatrice as well.

But, for what kind of goal?

To lead someone to gold?
To prevent a disaster?
To bring back a lost love?

The epitaph is as follows;
My beloved hometown, the bountiful river running through it. You who seek the Golden Land, follow it's path downstream and seek the key. If you follow the river downstream, you will find a village. In the village, look for the shore the two will tell you of. There sleeps the key to the Golden Land.

He who lays his hand upon the key shall travel under the rules below.
At the first twilight, you shall lift up as sacrifice the six chosen by the key.
At the second twilight, the surviving shall tear apart the two who are close.
At the third twilight, the surviving shall praise my honorable name on high.
At the fourth twilight, gouge the head and kill.
At the fifth twilight, gouge the chest and kill.
At the sixth twilight, gouge the belly and kill.
At the seventh twilight, gouge the knee and kill.
At the eighth twilight, gouge the leg and kill.
At the ninth twilight, the Witch shall live again and none shall be left to live.
At the tenth twilight, the journey shall end and you should reach the Golden Land.

The Witch will praise the wise, and should bestow four treasures.
One shall be, all the gold from the Golden Land.
One shall be, the resurrection of the souls of all the dead.
One shall be, even the resurrection of the lost love.
One shall be, to put the Witch to sleep for all time.
Sleep peacefully, my most beloved witch, Beatrice.

The words under the portrait is rumored as a riddle to where Kinzo’s tons of gold were hidden.

Though the members of his family had tried to solve the epitaph to acquire the tons of gold that the witch had given him, no one had been able to accomplish that challenge.

The story centers on the riddle, and the actual sacrifices that happen to bring back Beatrice.

Though, she isn’t a completely mythical being in the island. As revealed in Turn of the Golden Witch, she can show herself to only Kanon and Shannon.

During Legend of the Golden Witch, the first ceremony begins for the sacrifices during the family reunion. However, because of the absence of one family member for years, they couldn’t start the ceremony without him. When Battler does finally show up for the family meeting, Beatrice gives a letter to Maria - the youngest child, and one of the only people who believe in her.

The letter is as follows;

Welcome to Rokkenjima, everyone of the Ushiromiya family. I am serving Kinzo-sama as the alchemist-adviser of this house and my name is Beatrice. I was serving him obeying a contract that extended for many years but, today, Kinzo-sama sentenced the end of that contract.

Consequently, during today, I’ll have my duty as alchemist-adviser of the family to come to a closure, so please be understanding of that. Then, I must explain one part of the contract to everyone here. I, Beatrice, did loan a vast amount of gold to Kinzo-sama but with a certain condition.

As for that condition, he will return me all the gold by the end of the contract. And as an interest, I can accept everything of the Ushiromiya family. Upon hearing this, everyone will probably lament as Kinzo-sama is being too merciless.
However, Kinzo-sama, in order to give a chance to leave the wealth and fortune to everyone, added a special clause. Only when that clause is satisfied, I’ll eternally lose my right to collect the gold and the interest.”

――Special clause――

When the contract ends, Beatrice will have the right to collect the gold and the interest. However, if a person who disclose the hidden gold of the contract appears, Beatrice must eternally and completely abdicate of this right …From now on, the collect of the interest will be performed but, if whoever one person among everyone can satisfy the special clause,

Everything will be returned including the part already collected.

Furthermore, as an outset of the collect, I already have received in my custody the “Finger Ring of the Head of the Ushiromiya Family” that indicates that he succeeded the inheritance of the Ushiromiya family.

Please, confirm with the wax seal.

About the hiding place of the gold, Kinzo-sama already publicly announced it at the inscription under my portrait. The conditions are equal to all the people who can read the inscription. If the gold is disclosed, I will return everything. With that, please, enjoy to the fullest your battle of wits with Kinzo-sama.

I’m praying from the bottom of my heart that tonight turns out to be an intellectual and yet elegant night.

――Beatrice the Golden

Yes, her game is simple-

Unless someone can solve the epitaph of the twilight, people will die for her revival, and for the sake of the Golden Land. In the first story, no one had tried to solve the epitaph and as such, some had been killed and sent to Purgatory.

The story is never quite clear on what the Golden Land is at first, though it can be similar to how people might describe Heaven - a peaceful, happy place where everyone is equal-where there is no work that has to be done for servants, and everyone that had died in the past can be revived with Beatrice’s powers.

During the Tea Party in Legend of the Golden Witch, Beatrice makes her first appearance to the readers. Witches, though, cannot maintain their powers if enough humans do not believe in her existence. Because Battler didn’t believe that she was a real witch, and all of the murders that had happened during the ceremony were done by a human culprit, she could not maintain the form of the people whom she brought into the Golden Land with her, and they fell apart - their souls devoured by demons of Hell.

He challenges her - and she agrees to a game with him. They will repeat the ceremony over and over again, debating with each other on whether witches are real or not until one of them surrenders. Battler will argue that witches and magic don’t exist, and Beatrice will fight to prove that she herself is real.

Turn of the Golden Witch
❛Even if you try to search for me, it's useless. Even if you try to escape from me, it's useless. Even if you try to deny me, that's also useless.❜

In this arc, she finally makes herself known on the island, and becomes one of the guests staying in the mansion. The ceremony begins again, but the deaths are much more brutal and harsh this time. Whether it’s killing the first six sacrifices by tearing out their organs and stuffing their stomachs with candy inside of a chapel, or if it’s merely killing two lovers before they can say their last words to one another.

It's through this arc that she's nothing but seemingly cruel and ruthless; killing because it's 'fun' and doing what she can to make Battler surrender to him. She's merciless, cruel, and doesn't hesitate to kill others.

In this game, Battler does surrender to her - and becomes her furniture, but her quickly recovers from this during the Tea Party and challenges her yet again.

Banquet of the Golden Witch
❛The vase was very beautiful, rich with history and value. But the vase easily fell, and smashed. Lives are that fragile, that easily... lost. By the loss of a single life, the whole world would be filled with so much sadness. ... I cried even more at how terrible that would be.❜

In Banquet of the Golden Witch, one of the family members does finally solve the epitaph’s riddle and finds the gold. Eva’s ‘child side’ becomes the new Beatrice, and the other Beatrice before her becomes known as just Beato - a nickname she asked Battler to call her, as it’s only something that people close to her may call her.

There is one scene that Battler and Beato observe as the new Beatrice (EVA-Beatrice) kills for one of the Twilights, and instead of merely murdering the person for the sake of the ceremony, she takes advantage of the endless power that only Beatrice can use - reviving and killing over and over again for her amusement. Beato, not knowing the harm in such an activity, laughed at what EVA-Beatrice was doing, causing Battler to grow even more cold towards her.

He told her that he didn’t want to see her after that - that there was no way that he could accept someone as cold as her as his opponent in a game. This is the first time we see Beatrice grow emotional at Battler’s actions - she grows frustrated, and rambles on about how there shouldn’t be any harm in something like killing. Why should a child worry about breaking a toy when it can be easily repaired? This is the sort of thinking that Beatrice seems to follow when it comes to murdering others.

After that, she shows a softer side to herself - requesting that the murders not be done so brutally, and wanting to prove herself as a ‘real witch’. Her teacher, Virgilia, tells her that the Endless Magic that she had used for evil beforehand was originally supposed to be used to bring happiness to others - and because Beatrice had never used her magic for such a thing, she was not a real witch. Because of this, another side of Beatrice’s personality begins to reveal itself - Beato tries to revive those who had fallen for the sake of the twilight, no matter how hard it is with her powers weakened. She even tries to sacrifice herself just so two lovers can spend a little more time with one another.

This, too, proves to be a trap set for Battler to agree that she is a real witch - that the entire time, she was merely acting just for the sake of his surrender.

( Yet, there's still a part of her that shows she doesn't enjoy it. She doesn't like tricking him like that, pretending to be cruel.

So... Is it that she's merely pretending to be kind? Or is it that she was merely pretending to be cruel to him for the sake of her game? )

However, he again, challenges her.

Alliance of the Golden Witch
❛ ... That's right, I am fighting only to be killed. ... It was promised that through my tragedy, I would meet my end, was it not...?❜

In this portion of the story, the writer reveals how Beatrice taught Maria magic, and how she helps to give one of her stuffed animals a more human-like form- Sakutarou. She had begun to teach Maria more and more black magic to do horrible things. To kill, instead of revive. However, she does it as a request to help Maria soothe her anger. To help her best friend, and someone who she was so fond of.

There is a contest for the grandchildren of the Ushiromiya family - if they can complete a challenge successfully, one of them will become the new head of the family. She challenges Battler and asks,

‘Ushiromiya Battler has a sin. What is it?
People die because of Ushiromiya Battler. Because of a sin he committed seven years ago.’

When he cannot remember, her mood changes completely, and instead of being ecstatic about her own revival, she becomes silent, and cold towards others. Killing when being talked back to.

Feeling exhausted, bored, rejected, lonely, Beatrice attempts to close up the game completely. Freezing the game for eternity - leaving the pieces and mysteries both left to be abandoned for all eternity. In her words;

She'll leave 'Battler to be covered in dust to let it pile up to his shoulders'.

Because Battler's sin is that he cannot remember the promise that was so important to her. What is the point in continuing something she made so she could be near him for - if he can't bother to remember her?

She even goes as far as to erase Battler's soul from the game completely - and runs away with another witch in her alliance, MARIA, to reside in the Golden Land for what she hopes to be an eternity. However, it takes two people to create a universe such as the Golden Land. When Ange takes Maria from that paradise that Beatrice has created, the world shatters, and Beatrice is forced to return to her game.

Because she cannot run, cannot escape from what was originally hers. She's chained to it until the two observers of her game grow bored.

Beatrice is trapped in this game for eternity. Two other witches - Lambdadelta and Bernkastel - have made a game out of observing Beatrice’s own challenges - to watch her and Battler fight against each other for eternity. Despite knowing that Beatrice’s chances of winning are zero - they will still force her to continue. In a way, Beatrice has always been a prisoner since the moment that Kinzo sealed her inside of a human body.

And so, because she cannot do it herself, she begs for Battler to take her life. She provokes him, mocks him, does what she can to drive him into enough rage to finally kill her. To finish the game for good. And he almost does, with his theories of the truth that happened on Rokkenjima. In other words, it's a attempted suicide. This is perhaps one of the moments where we see how much Beatrice has developed as a character. With portions of the scene like this, you can see that she's not just closing the game for her own sake, but for Battler to return to his family as well.

And she entrusts him with her very heart - asking him to crush it, to destroy it. If she is to die, she wants the truths of her game to go with her. Or... Did she merely entrust Battler to take these secrets from her?

With one final challenge to Battler, she finally asks;

"Who am I...?"

End of the Golden Witch
❛Virgil guided Dante through Purgatory ... taking him to where Eternal Lady Beatrice waited at the summit. So... the deepest party surely wasn't the bottom, but the peak of Mount Purgatory. And there... the Eternal Lady has always been waiting for Dante.❜

She still doesn't die. Rather, she does live, but she doesn't do anything. She doesn't speak, doesn't show any emotion. She's almost lifeless, in other words. Battler was the one who put her in this state - because she had allowed him to deny her so much that it had destroyed her physical form. He even has to go as far as lifting things for her - helping her to drink tea, because she cannot do it herself.

It's revealed in End of the Golden Witch that did not commit any murders, deaths, or harm anyone for the fun of it. Rather, she had nothing to gain or lose. She hadn't even started the game to torment Battler.

... So, why?

Because Beatrice believed that being cruel was the only way to push Battler towards finding the truth. She believed so strongly that he could find the truth, even though the chances were small. Even if it would be a miracle that he could solve the riddle that she had given to him.

However;
Without love, the truth cannot be seen.

And when Battler tells her that he cannot remember a promise that he made so long ago - her gamepiece finally says that she's given up hope. That even though he tried to save her a few times during the course of the fifth game - even though he's been doing what he can to ease her pain, that she would rather die then live on knowing that he cannot remember the promise they made.

And eventually, she passes on. When she finds that Battler has been defeated by Dlanor and Erika, she finally allows her body to crumble.

And the supposed 1,000 year old Witch would cease to exist. She would finally be granted a tragic ending, as it was foretold.
