Excised from verse 2: My long-standing advice not to attack someone without a reason stands true, but only as long as you're not being threatened by anybody. If you're being threatened by someone, they are motivated by one or more of the following factors:
1) They do not subscribe to any particular theory of multiplayer. They are attacking you randomly.
2) They currently control a large, vigilant creature and you control no blockers. They are attacking you because you are very weak.
3) They lost to you in a previous game. They are attacking you because you're currently a better player than they are.
4) They know that you are the only player in the game that can remove a permanent of type X that they are relying on. They are attacking you because killing someone is better than counterspelling them.
5) They believe something erroneous about you. They are attacking you because a third party has manipulated them.
6) They believe you are about to combo out. They (and likely several other players) are attacking you in an effort to defuse the threat you pose to the game.
