It is May 1st which means two things …
1. It is Leigha’s eighteenth birthday today. She is legal now. So watch out. ( Please try to enjoy your day. You turn eighteen only once, and in many ways, you've been burdened with adult responsibilities long before reaching the so-called momentous date. )
2. New music.
My new earphones need to arrive yesterday.
No, that wasn’t a mistype. I ordered them on a two-day service Tuesday night. They should have been here by Thursday/Friday. That’s extra money I paid right there! Rawr!
Angel by Massive Attack *
download I’ve been familiar with this song for years, but only recently found it. Consequently, it was right around the time I first saw Go, and the song is featured dietetically in a scene. This is a very sexy song. I really don’t know how else I can describe it. Massive Attack’s one of those collaboration bands that’s more about the music than it is the lyrics, at least it is for me. Download it.
you are my angel / come from way above / to bring me love
Art is Hard by Cursive *
download This is my current guilty pleasure at the moment. It’s a fun little snarky song, far from subtle in its criticism of the trend of self-deprecation, loathing, and whining bands pour into their music. I could quote the whole damned thing, because it expresses my thoughts perfectly. Another most download.
well here we go again / the art of acting weak / fall in love to fail to boost your CD sales / and that CD sells / yeah, what a hit / you got to repeat it / you gotta sink to swim
Bleed Like Me by Garbage
I’m not going to go into a rant about how much this CD is shaping up to be a disappointment. I’ll only focus on the good aspects of it. One of those four happens to be this song. It probably consists of the best lyrics on the whole album. And I can’t help it, the song reminds me of a certain character (can you guess who: “you should see me scars”). I wish it was a little angrier. When she sings that line, I was expecting wailing, and I was a little disappointed that I didn’t get wailing. What I got instead was cavalier nostalgia that’s borderline wistful. It reminds me a little of Dresden Doll’s Bad Habit in that respect, except Bad Habit is better I have to admit.
JT gets all fucked up in some karaoke bar / after two drinks he’s a loser / after three drinks he’s a star
Break of Day by Victory at Sea
downloadI owe this one to Tina. I can’t find lyrics for Victory at Sea anywhere and it’s beyond frustrating. This is one of my favorite songs from the album. I’m a sucker for the sorrowful morose songs that alternate between an almost acoustic setting, and then suddenly the drums and electric car crash in at different intervals during the song adding to the intensity. And the lead singer’s vocals are beautiful.
through the dark I can see past the lines of you and me / and then it’s like the break of day / I listen closely just to hear you say that you want, you want…
Drink Me Dry by Cassie Steele
downloadI don’t know anything about Cassie Steele. I found this song on a Boone/Sharon soundtrack. Is it possible to ship a couple you’ve never even seen on the screen? Because I only saw Lost for about fifteen minutes before growing bored with it, but I became intrigued by the shipping through all the soundtracks and from the descriptions of read of them. I’m … getting off track here. Boone’s dead. That much I know, which is where this song came in, I guess. This is another dramatic piece. I guess it’s mostly for Kathryn, since she wants more “death” songs. I couldn’t get one with “Death” or “Die” in the title, and for that I apologize. Hopefully this will due though. It’s uh … about still being tied to someone in death. Yeah. And it’s also in the minor key. It borderlines being melodramatic, but I still like it.
six feet under ground / how’d you like me now / I have set my pain at ease / now leave me heart alone with all my rotting bones / so my soul may rest in peace
Just a Little Girl by Amy Studt
downloadI just recently found Amy. She reminds me a little of Katy Rose and Avril Lavigne. This is my pop contribution to the list. The lyrics are a little cheesy, but when you take into account that this girl is supposedly fourteen/fifteen, you find yourself forgiving the simplicity of the music. Let yourself get past the first verse. It’s the catchy chorus that makes the song kind of fun.
cause I’m just a little girl, you see / but there’s a hell of a lot more to me
I’mmortel by Skinny Puppy *
downloadMy favorite song at the moment. This one’s thanks to my suitemate Lauren. Imagine this playing on the loud, throbbing base of her BMW. It’s a really fun song. Skinny Puppy has been around for a while. They’ve been dubbed the “godfather of industrial.” I haven’t heard any of their earlier stuff. I only know that when I listen to this song, it makes me want to brave the underground industrial club circuit to dance. The only complaint I have is that I feel cheated by the ending. The climax comes a good minute before the song ends. But it’s still good! Download it. Now.
it looks like something far away / inside the image grows and makes the shadow fade / behind your image posted on the wall / a crack is hiding, fighting for it all.
Laura by the Scissor Sisters
downloadOkay. I can understand why the Scissor Sisters wouldn’t be for everyone, and why you wouldn’t be able to listen to them at hours on end. But this song is really funny. The electronic/synth beats have me bouncing in my seat as I type this. And the way “Ch’mon” is sung during the hook makes me giggle for some reason. If you like the easy going, fun, danceable songs, this one’s for you.
Laura, can’t you give me some time / I got to give myself one more chance / to be the man that I know I am
Passive by A Perfect Circle
downloadA Perfect Circle keeps managing to find its way onto my play lists. I do detect a new obsession coming on. I love the lyrics of this song. I love the concept behind the song. But you know what I love the most? The way the song builds to the final climatic moment Maynard Keenan is screaming “Why can’t you turn and face me?! You fucking disappoint me!” The song builds in its anger, but you don’t really grasp that anger until the climatic end before everything simmers down. And you have to listen close for the reflective “passive aggressive bullshit” at the end of the song.
go ahead and play dead / I know that you can hear me
Porcelain by Moby
downloadThis is another song I’ve always been familiar with but only found recently. Kathryn, you might like it, because again, there’s death references in it. It even starts with “in my dreams I’m dying all the time.” I’m pretty sure this song has been used in commercials before. Or maybe a movie trailer. Or an actual movie. Either way. I think it compliments Massive Attack’s Angel very nicely. They both have that ethereal mood scheme going on in them.
I never meant to hurt you / I never meant to lie / so this is good bye / this is goodbye / tell the truth, you never wanted me / tell me
Something I Can Never Have by Nine Inch Nails *
downloadThis is one of Nine Inch Nail’s quieter songs. It’s off the debut album, Pretty Hate Machine, and it amazes me how before its time the album really was. I think it came out in 1989, or something? A lot of the stuff off the album sounds like it could fit in perfectly in present day, and I’m beginning to see just how influential NIN was for industrial music. But like I said, this song’s a quieter song, and not prototypical of what you might normally associate with “Nine Inch Nails.” Trent’s straining, desperate vocals dominate this song. The lyrics are horribly depressing. Reznor’s voice is so fucking intense in this. It’s great. Download it.
in this place it seems like such a shame / though it all looks different now, I know it’s still the same / everywhere I look you’re all I see / just a fading, fucking reminder of who I used to be
The Blower’s Daughter by Damien Rice
downloadIt’s that song from Closer. Slow, sad, and depressing. Kind of like the movie, though the song could probably hold its own. The lyrics are what immediately sold me. Damien Rice’s voice is a little annoying, but it’s ignorable when you pay attention to the acoustic guitar. And then these pretty female vocals kick in at the end. Because that’s what this is. A pretty, sad song. I think the lyrics below pretty much sum it up.
and so it is / the shorter story / no love, no glory / no hero in her skies
25 by Veruca Salt
download I’m starting to really like Veruca Salt. And I don’t think it necessarily has anything to do with the lyrics or the two main vocalists that alternated in the beginning of their run. It’s the little moments, like the bluesy guitar riff at the end of this song, that enhances the entire thing for me. Granted, the lyrics aren’t too bad by themselves. But Veruca Salt’s one of those groups that manages to present the entire package nicely. You’ve got pretty vocals that can wail and scream at the right moments, you’ve got unique lyrics, and you’ve got the music to match. The vocals in this start off so softly and quietly, that when the song suddenly gets louder, you jump in surprise if you turned the volume up earlier to hear it.
I’m afraid I will never change / it’s okay I’m not ashamed / I can say that my bed is made / you can bend me, shape me, anyway you can
Bonus:
Requiem For a Dream main theme
downloadA little instrumental bonus piece. The main theme from Requiem For a Dream. The movie wouldn’t be the movie without this song. I don’t think this song even needs an explanation. All the cool kids should know what it sounds like, because they’ve seen the movie. And if you haven’t seen it, then download the song, and if you like it, go see the movie. Few movies utilize diegetic sound as well is Requiem did.
