I have a confession to make.
While I've managed to get the hang of quite a lot of cooking the last few years, baking remains beyond me. Cookies I can do, but anything else could be used as roofing tiles.
On a nuclear bunker.
So when I'm making something that requires sponge cake I use one of those sponge mixes from Sainsburys. They're only 23p a packet, plus any eggs I might have left over from a pancake frenzy we had several days ago. Tonight I've made
Eve's Pudding, so I stirred a little cinnamon into the dry mix before I made it up.
I'm embarrassed to admit the result is awesome. Seriously. I wish it was made from scratch, but no, it's a damn packet mix and some cheap Gala apples, so I'm wavering between pride and shame here.
In other news, the first tiny shoots are visible from the herbs. And the winner is...*drum roll*...the oregano! I'm so pleased- everything seems to be so late this year (anyone seen any daffodils yet?) that I was worried my kitchen windowsill might be in for a crop failure.
ETA: There are little pale specks in the basil that look as though they might be shoots come tomorrow. Can't wait!
