۞IC Information: ۞
Name: Vanitas
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep

Timeline: Just before the final battle in the Keyblade Graveyard- after disappearing into the dark corridors during his little chat with Ventus on Destiny Islands.
Age: 16

Appearance:
"You used to be too broken to talk back."

Before Ventus’ heart connected with Sora, Vanitas had no face. But he still had a body- thin framed, Vanitas makes up for this with a larger muscle mass than both Sora and Ventus. His body suit is also familiar, made of the same styling taken on by Riku in the original kingdom hearts, with the distinct differentiation caused by red, black, and dark blue.

He has the face of Sora however- by which I mean the face of a complete derp. His saving grace in keeping his far more evil status is the pigmentation of his eyes, a vivid yellow, and jet black hair.

Yet he still carries the power of a pout that can kill.

۞Abilities: ۞

۞The Keyblade۞
His main offensive weapon which is used as a bludgeoning tool. With an uncanny speed, Vanitas uses this to tear into his opponents and enhance his other, more magical orientated abilities. His physical and magical attacks are often combined to deadly affect, and he’ll stalk his prey across the battlefield, summoning large bursts of speed or even close range teleportation to gain the advantage.

Void Gear- Strength +8, Magic +4, Length- long.

Vanitas is also one of two key components in creating the X-blade; a blade that can only be forged when a being of pure light and darkness clash. This is a weapon to fear, with even the incomplete form allowing Vanitas the strength to shatter Ventus’ Heart Station, but send Aqua and Mickey flying away in a gust of wind caused by a mere sweep of his arm. The abilities as exhibited can be purely accredited to the power of the blade itself.

The blade is also said to have the power to call all keyblade wielders within the universe, to re-enact the Keyblade War. The amount of devastation that this could potentially cause is insurmountable.

۞Magic۞
In cohesion to his physical abilities and keyblade, Vanitas’ magic proves that his bite is many times worse than his bark. Usually, Vanitas will move away, into the air or dance to the side before throwing some of his more vicious attacks, but even close range Vanitas’ magic makes a common appearance.

-Dark Firaga: Large, deadly fireballs, used commonly to the extent that one makes its appearance in one of his many cutscenes with Ventus. Dark Thundaga is used to the same extent, both moves generally taking place when Vanitas is well away from his opponent, or in the air.

-Dark Infusion: In which Vanitas infuses his blade with darkness, causing its essence to seep off the steal in purple waves. It allows for a greater amount of physical damage.

۞Shotlock۞

Vanitas’ shotlock is known as the Dark Cannon; like all shotlocks, this is a concentrated, often lasting attack meant to wipe out the enemy in one fell swoop. Dark Cannon takes on a triangular form with spinning crystals revolving around Vanitas’ body in a clockwise direction, and the move itself appears to have a concentrated level of range- Vanitas can turn horizontally, but is unable to direct the beam diagonally or vertically.

۞Personal Abilities۞
-Physically, Vanitas is inhuman in many ways- his strength, his endurance, his speed are all exceptional, and like most cockroaches, he survives every battle and scrap with a laugh and the last word.

As mentioned above, he also retains the ability to teleport short distances. Levitation is not out of his grasp. Though most cut scenes do portray a more common usage of the Dark Corridors, his meeting with Ventus in the Lanes Between also proves that he’s capable of traversing them with little more than his own darkness to protect him.

۞The Unversed۞
"It happened when you and I were split into two. The negativity took shape as these monsters. They are what I feel-a horde of fledgling emotions under my control."

Vanitas is capable of creating and controlling a series of monsters and beasts known as the Unversed- made from the negativity of Vanitas and those around him. Though they appear as the second type of dark versed creature, they are the first to attack the realm of light, with a proposed four year timeline in which Vanitas ventures across the worlds and spreads the beings that are essentially an extension of himself.

They’re the only enemy thus far that do not have an immediate connection or want for the heart. Rather, they’re creation relies on the emotions that the hearts contain, and so despite the variety that the Unversed show, all do show the bearings of the emotion most used in their conception. Each Unversed portrays a signature styling of eye- gleeful, sorrowful, or furious. This may also affect the rate at which they attack a person, as Unversed with the signature ‘happy’ eyes are less likely to make movement in a timely manner.

The Cursed Coach, a boss from Aqua’s story in the Castle of Dreams is a good example of this simple manipulation on Vanitas’ part. Throughout the three protagonists stories, the jealousy of Lady Tremaine is constantly pronounced and expanded upon. The Cursed Coach brings this jealousy to a head, though it also brings about the demise of both Lady Tremaine and her two daughters.

A full list of the Unversed and their abilites can be found here, however on a basic level, it is important to note that Unversed seem to maintain two different branches. Physical Unversed are often ground prone, whilst all magical usage occurs from airborne or levitating monsters- a reflection of Vanitas’ own usage of magic. It’s also notable that there are very few styles of Unversed that actually use a weapon aside from their own body.

۞Personality:۞
From the very beginning, Vanitas is everything that a person would take as a heinous flaw in character, summed up and chucked into a single body. He is greedy, sly, violent, manipulative, callous, merciless- and various other negative words and phrases, though if insane is to be added to this list, then so must be intelligence.

Vanitas is the type of person who knows people, with abilities that strengthen his analyzing of their own characters and allow him to use his findings for all the wrong reasons. He enjoys and revels in chaos, but in stating that, the subtle path is usually the better one. If Vanitas was a cat, he’d be the type to ‘play with his food’. So long as there’s the smallest amount of confidence, faith, or trust left in a person? There’s something there to destroy. Vanitas shows a focus on making sure that others lives are specifically broken apart, often appearing and making the situation worse with mere shock value.

Vanitas has shown time and time again not only to be in complete control of himself, but exceptionally aware of the actions and movements of the people around him. He’s a pawn with a plan, one that deviates from the proper course whenever he deems it right. Likely his greatest flaw is having too much confidence in his own abilities and the plans laid out by himself and his master. When it comes to Vanitas’ superiority complex, the sky is honestly the limit… with absolutely no pun intended.

If he can play someone, he will. If he can make their life just that much darker, he will. Any tender subject of importance, any soft spot- he will find it, and he will take advantage of it. Vanitas is a cockroach in all but name, finding cracks in the walls where none were before and coming back time and time again, no matter how many beat downs he receives.

He is the body and driving force of a unique, intelligent darkness, and he lives up to this name with an insane laugh and the constant actions of one seeking complete and utter chaos.

۞History: ۞
Vanitas’ personality is reflected in the violent action that causes his conception. Ventus was originally the apprentice of Xehanort; a pawn and a potential vessel for Xehanort’s heart after the concept of continuing to live forever had come to him. Ventus was not capable of directing the darkness in his heart, however, and Xehanort, disgusted by his apparent weakness, ripped it out of him using the power of the keyblade. And so Vanitas was born, taking far more from Ventus’ heart than was needed, according to the secret reports.

With Vanitas’ created, Ventus was too weak to continue his own existence. It was determined by Xehanort that he would die, and so, Ventus was taken to Destiny Islands to live out the last few moments of his life. As a world that Xehanort viewed as ‘empty, like a prison’ the thought was that Ventus would feel ‘right at home’.

However, Sora’s heart then touched with Ventus’, allowing the boy to live, Vanitas to gain a facial appearance, and for Xehanort’s plans to change. He takes the boy to Eraqus and his two apprentices, noting Terra’s exceptional grasp on the darkness, and so his plans change further.

Cue four years in which, debatably, both Ventus and Vanitas are put through their own forms of training and honing of skills. It’s a gap that is needed for Xehanort to both cement his plans, and for all pawns upon the board to be ready. The next time Vanitas appears, his personality finally begins to shine.

He has a complete derision for Ventus, claiming that the boy ‘ain’t gonna cut it’ in regards to creating the X-blade. He continues further with a desire to break Ventus in, appearing before the boy in his bedroom and giving him the ‘incentive to leave home’. Xehanort’s secret reports give further insight into this as well, revealing that Vanitas can feel what Ventus does, and so has knowledge of his weakness and sore points- in particular, those regarding Terra and Aqua. He shows no indication to rising against Ventus’ baiting of him towards anger, instead concentrating his words and actions into upsetting Ventus and making him irrational, actions that do lead to Ventus leaving home.

His method involves two things, showing his clarity and knowledge in regards to confusing with multiple misunderstandings, rather than the one. As he pushes Ventus with the knowledge that the ‘Terra he knows will be gone forever’, he also accentuates the point of how little Ventus knows- reacting to his behavior with ridicule against his childish nature and letting him know that if he doesn’t get out into the worlds himself, then he’ll never know anything. Adding this into account means that whilst its his need to find Terra that drives him away from home, it’s a want to learn and travel and to show others that he’s fully capable of caring for himself that keeps Ventus from listening to sense and returning home, even after being denied the companionship of both his friends.

With Ventus persuaded, Vanitas then travels to each world himself, causing chaos as he releases the Unversed in each location with the hopes of causing Ventus to grow stronger. His appearances to Aqua also only occur when Ventus is currently within or has just left the world Aqua is currently located in, with examples to both Radiant Garden and Neverland. This gives some debate as to whether his own travels are often in synch with Ventus’, ensuring that his other faces the trials needed to grow stronger. Despite words of the contrary to Aqua, his actions show a clear dependency to Ventus and Ventus alone becoming stronger.

As mentioned prior, however, he also shows an impatience and a willingness to change the situation to how he feels it should end. Upon his first fight with Ventus in the Keyblade Graveyard, Vanitas deems the boy utterly worthless, preparing to deal the final blow upon him despite Xehanort’s plans. Without knowledge of Mickey’s sudden interference, its easily seen that Vanitas is serious in his threat. He shows a complete disregard for Xehanort’s wishes in this, playing the game for his own sake and relenting only once Ventus has shown some capability when fighting alongside another. Still not satisfied, he leaves through the dark corridors with only one more voice of acknowledgement.

”Consider yourself on probation.”

Whether this can really be called a defeat, rather than a change of heart is completely up to interpretation.

It’s not long before he shows his face again. However, this time it is not to Ventus. With the flush of an inadequate victory behind him, and concern for his best friend’s plight, Ventus rushes off after Terra during a very tense moment, leaving Aqua to catch up with the two. Before she can, Vanitas is stepping in her way, as cool and mocking as usual. When she answers his questions over Ventus with one of her own, his reply is simple, but adamant. He is the only one whose questions should be answered, as he’s the only one who will be leaving the conversation alive.

The fight that follows is intense, and though Vanitas is the first to fall, Aqua herself is winded, barely capable of walking over to his prone form in an attempt to find out who he is. Before she can take his mask off, however, Vanitas laughs. When he stands, its with little difficulty, exhibiting that his vulnerable state was nothing more than a ruse. Through this and the previous fight, we get to see that Vanitas is clearly the type of person who enjoys toying with victims of particular interest- in the situations shown, predominantly Ventus and Aqua. It’s curious to note that not once does he interfere with Terra’s journey before the final battle, but this may have to do with Xehanort’s plans, rather than a lack of interest on Vanitas’ part.

With a sadistically gleeful tone in his voice, Vanitas congratulates Aqua on her win and tells her that he might just keep her around, after all. His tone then reaches a darker level, stating that it ‘never hurts to have a backup’. This shows a willingness to throw aside Ventus for a more compatible tool, though whether such a plan would be successful or not will never be seen. It does cement the fact that he is well and truly able to think for himself, not only reacting on cue with what he needs to do, but forming loopholes and plans for himself for if he decides something should go wrong.

Yet another period of time passes with little to be heard of Vanitas. Its easy to state that he is still around, for no matter what world Ventus, Terra and Aqua find themselves within, the Unversed are surely there as well. Even the sanctity of Disney Town, with all its indications of being protected by the Corner Stone in Kingdom Hearts 2 seems to have little defence against the Unversed that plague its streets. In this way, Vanitas is the predominant source of darkness within this timeline, as without him, the Unversed would not exist, either. He is the predominant driving force against every source of what is wrong with the worlds during this time, with the Heartless making a singular appearance within a world known to be on the cusp of both light and darkness.

Vanitas makes it very obvious with his next meeting with Aqua that he has been paying close attention to both her travels and Ventus’, reappearing with the same wooden keyblade Terra gave Ventus during their training within his grasp. He tells her quite simply that Ventus has outgrown the childish toy, snapping with with brute strength and quite obviously going for an impassioned reaction from the keyblade master. He gets exactly what he wishes for.

Another virulent fight takes place- both giving their all, and receiving it. Once again, Vanitas is the first man down. However, Aqua faints before further revelations can be made, and he is gone once again when she wakes. Its difficult to say if he was play acting at this time, or honestly hurt, as he shows up quite soon afterwards to hound Ventus upon Destiny Islands.

Vanitas insists that with Ventus finally strong enough to forge the X-blade and the other now fully aware of his purpose within Xehanort’s schemes that the two should merge and finally fulfil their reason for being. When Ventus shows signs of rebellion, stating that he won’t fight, he shows little qualms in telling him that he ‘used to be too broken to talk back’. The words prompt Ventus into a painful recollection of his time as Xehanort’s apprentice, and it is here that we finally see the cause of Vanitas’ creation.

With no pity or leeway towards a temporary reprieve, Vanitas goes on to threaten the lives of both Terra and Aqua.

”Then we’ll see how long you play the pacifist.”

He then takes his leave, Ventus on the brink of following him, all pawns in their place, and a prolific plan about to come full circle. It’s a shame, truly, that it actually never will.
