Yo Joe!
Still having comics on the mind this morning from Comic Con I decided to go watch GI Joe this morning. I surprisingly had a lot of fun watching it. It's a campy fun popcorn movie not to be taken seriously at all.
I can't in all honestly recommend it though. The acting is cheesy at times (the villains were pretty interesting, though) and the action was over the top and exaggerated but I guess I was kind of expecting that. The movie seems like it was written by an imaginative 12 year old or something. CG and design work was excellent.
I did watch a lot of GI Joe growing up so I was still familiar with all the characters but other than that I don't remember much about the series so I went in with no expectations regarding storylines. I do know that they rewrote the background story to some of the characters so I know the movie isn't 100% loyal to the series but I really didn't care this time around although I was disappointed that the Baroness didn't have the Russian accent lol.
I think it does well as a kids' movie and the redesigns were necessary especially if they plan on revitalizing the franchise, but if you're looking for a tribute to the 80's series you may or may not be disappointed. I know there are some devoted GI Joe fans that are really upset and some that enjoyed it regardless. I know I did and if anything it at least got me interested in revisiting the original show.
