Haven't done one of these in a while. Here goes. Also, if I played you and you're out there reading this, feel free to send me your racks and I'll add them to the Quackle files, if you so desire.
I had a relaxing afternoon on Friday after teaching in the morning. I sat around and read for a while and worked on some classwork (crosswalk), then eventually cleaned up my place and took a quick nap.
jigsawn arrived around 7 pm and we headed down the street for some pizza and beer with my roommate, Chris. The bar was already quite crowded with rabid Penguins fans, except for the one guy walking down the street in a Red Wings jersey (who was heckled from all sides), so we got our pizza to go. We rushed back to my place so I could let in all of my friends who had showed up to watch the game. The hockey went pretty well, I daresay, as did most of the "that's what she said" jokes that came up (that's what she said). A good time was had by all, and we eventually settled in sometime past midnight with high hopes for the next day's Scrabbling.

Rebecca and I are still yet to have an evenly-drawn tournament game!
Lunch break: We didn't have much time, but Rebecca and I were eager to introduce Dave to Primanti's, so we got directions to the nearest one from the hotel front desk and went our merry way. Service was prompt and we scarfed down our delicious slaw-and-fry-laden sandwiches and made it back to the tourney in time.

It wasn't the opening day I was hoping for. In our carpool, Rebecca and Dave and I combined for 9 wins. Before the tourney started, I was thinking about going to the Warhol Museum to catch a concert by Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips, and after our disheartening peformance we were looking for a good time to take our minds off of the Scrabble so we decided to go. First, we stopped at my place for a drink and some anagrams. Some cool steals that I can remember included Dave's VERBOSITY + DII = BIODIVERSITY and SOFTWARE + DR = AFTERWORDS, and my FORWENT + ART = WATERFRONT. We then headed to Mad Mex in Oakland where I had the Angry Hippie burrito, heh. We made it to the Warhol a little after 10 and got to see Dean & Britta strum their guitars and sing while, as Dave already pointed ut, all of us white people tried to look not uncool. It was a good show, and having listened to Luna and Galaxie 500 and their duet stuff a lot recently I was quite happy to catch them in person.
I was a bit groggy on Sunday morning, but the coffee and omelette definitely helped. My goal for the day was to salvage a decent tournament and gain some rating points, if possible.

So a winning record after all that. Looking back, I'm fairly pleased with how I played. I need to review a lot of words and solidify what I "know" already, I need to drastically improve my board vision (identifying hot spots and finding candidate plays), and I need to practice working out endgame sequences. Ultimately, I think I just need to play more, both in person and online.
