Monthly Book List

Mar 01, 2007 09:47

For a shorter month, there's more or less the usual number of books on the list (and a few on the way to being on the March list).

The Arcadian Cypher by Peter Blake and Paul S. Blezard
Non Fiction
The fifth book in the Bible Codes boxed set. This was an interesting if unprovable read. There is one major problem though. Evidently in one edition there are plates of illustrations for the paintings which are discussed in depth in the book. However, those plates are not in this book. Whether this was a printer's error in this copy or true of all the copies for the Bible Codes box, I can't say. Still, the conclusions the authors came to are amazing. The other four books in this set are on last month's list.

A Kiss of Shadows by Laurell K. Hamilton
Fantasy/Romance
The first book in the Merry Gentry series. She's set up an interesting world to play in with this series. However, the storyline is more or less a guilty pleasure to read.

A Caress of Twilight by Laurell K. Hamilton
Fantasy/Romance
The sequel to A Kiss of Shadows. In some ways this is a better story than the first book. Probably because she didn't have to spent as much of her time setting the world up. Still this book fits the category of a guilty pleasure.

Mistral's Kiss by Laurell K. Hamilton
Fantasy/Romance
Part of the Merry Gentry series. A book that cries out for a sequel. In it, it seems that nothing is resolved. In addition, this is far too quick a read, taking only three or four hours at most.

The Free Bards by Mercedes Lackey
Fantasy
Three books in one, this volume contains the entirety of the Bardic Voices set: The Lark and the Wren, The Robin and the Kestrel and The Eagle and the Nightingale. I'd wanted to reread them for a while and finally got the chance. It's an interesting world which does raise some thorny questions. However, I find the religion a bit jarring. It's a bit too much like our world. For some reason, the Gypsies and other things fit the fantasy structure, while the Church doesn't. I'd love to know more about the background of Alanda. The author has left some extremely tantalizing hints.
