Hmmmm....I knew something was up with the trunk but for some reason I couldn't actually tell what it was *smacks head* Good going. I think I'll blame it on the a.m.
Personally I think the Trickster is in cahoots with Ruby and it doesn't have to be because Ruby has something on the Trickster. Maybe he just doesn't like whatever this 'other power' is? Maybe it is powerful enough that it could take away his mischief autonomy. Messing with Sam was just their way of training him without having to actually spend time on it. Think about all those things Sam killed by himself while Dean was gone. Maybe physically he's back where he started but now he knows what he is capable of when really pushed and all it took was two days at max.
Watching Sam pull the bullet out of his side (btw: Why did that little piece of metal stay so shallow and not puncture an organ? Is he Superman now too?) and stitch himself up again was all kinds of squick but kind of awesome at the same time. And I cracked up and almost woke up my roommate laughing at Sam and Dean's synchronization at the diner.
Regarding the shallowness of the bullet, I assume it hit a rib. It's not like Sam's got a whole lot of padding over his ribcage - it's all smokin' hot muscle and sinew.
Good point on the possibility of the Trickster's motivation, but I have to wonder what could be so powerful as to render a god's powers/autonomy invalid?
Very true, but it looked a bit low to have hit a rib. Though that could just be my (most likely unfounded) bias towards the idea that Sammy's powers were his own and only augmented by the demon blood. Telekinesis shield for the win.
Other than the actual existence of the demon's god-figure Lucifer, and maybe direct progeny aka the antichrist (and not the anti-antichrist which is what Sam is shaping up to be) I can't really think of anything powerful enough to keep the Trickster on his toes like that.
Double-checking the scene in question, it almost definitely hit a rib. This assumption is based on the position of said wound and the shadowing available in the scene indicating where potential!Sam's ribs lay.
