I've given up trying to understand people, really, but this one drives me nuts.
Everyone is so concerned about global warming. We want to use less fossil fuels and be nicer to the environment. I'm all for this. Sounds great.
So, it's January. It's supposed to be cold. Personally I think the windchills reaching 0F and below are a sign that maybe we aren't so far gone we can't change things. But all I heard all day long was "It's sooooo cold out! I hate this! I wish I had someone to warm up my car for me. Why is it so cold? Why does it have to snow?" On the radio tonight they were hoping it would warm up enough to melt the snow tomorrow.
To avoid revealing my hippy/environmentalist/farmer-type personality and scaring off everyone I meet, I have refrained from pointing out some points about cold weather/snow but I have to share them so here they are in my journal.
-The longer the cold lasts, the longer the ground stays frozen. Frozen ground means fewer fleas, ticks, mosquitos, and other pest insects in the warm months.
-Temperature fluctuations can cause fall planted flowers and crops to bloom too early and then be lost to another cold spell. Better to stay cold all winter.
-Snow is full of nitrogen and other good minerals. When it snows, it puts those minerals back into the soil where the plants can use them. Healthier yards, flowers, gardens, etc.
-Cold air is great for killing all those cold and flu germs that are floating around in overheated, central heat buildings full of people (aka offices/schools/daycares/etc). Getting out in the cold is actually good for you!
Okay, now I'm going to go look at the seed catalog and decide what I'm planting this year. Tomatoes definitely. Sungolds and then a variety pack from Seed Savers Exchange. Probably some squash and zucchini. And basil maybe. I'd like to grow my own basil.
