What We're Reading

The Enchanted Inkpot is excited to bring you a new regular feature. Once a month (or whenever we get around to it), a few of us will share what we’re currently reading. In turn, we’re hoping to hear back from you about what you’re reading, how you found it, and what you think! Of course, our booklist might be heavy on Young Adult and Middle Grade fantasy, but we all enjoy a wide variety of genres, and know you do as well.

So, here’s what we’re reading this month…

Carmen Ferreiro (“Two Moon Princess”): I just finished CORONETS AND STEEL by Sherwood Smith which I describe in my review here as “a delightful combination of The Prisoner of Zenda and Xanadu with a strong female protagonist who fences like Douglas Faribanks Jr. inthe 1937 movie, and waltzes like a well-bred princess in the royal ball.”

Not surprisingly my next book in my To Read pile is its sequel: BLOOD SPIRITS. I'll let you know how I like it next month.

Anna Staniszewski (“My Very UnFairy Tale Life”): I recently read (and fell in love with) UNEARTHLY by Cynthia Hand. I picked up the book because it was by a fellow Elevensies author. I was afraid it might be “just another angel story,” but I needn't have worried. Each page was filled with tension, and the characters felt like real, vibrant people. Even though I was desperate to find out what happens at the end, I read the book slowly so I could savor every word. It's been a while since a story sucked me in so completely. I can't wait for the sequel!

Marissa Meyer (“Cinder: Book One of the Lunar Chronicles”): I've just started SO SILVER BRIGHT, the third book in Lisa Mantchev's Theatre Illuminata trilogy. I can't wait to see how it ends!

Ellen Booraem (“The Unnameables“): Most of what I'm reading right now is research, but the book that's been getting me through my daily penance on the exercise bike is GREGOR AND THE PROPHECY OF BANE, the second book in Suzanne Collins' Gregor the Overlander
series. I love books in which fantasy meets real world: Gregor's an impoverished New York kid who keeps getting dragged to the Underland to join humans and giant bats and cockroaches in their war againstgiant rats. He's forced to be a hero, but he never loses his identity as a normal kid. And it's always his heart that wins the day.

Leah Cypress (“Nightspell“): I'm currently reading ULTRAVIOLET by R.J. Anderson. I've been looking forward to thisbook since I first saw the cover and blurb, and so far it does not disappoint. Very intriguing!

Jennifer Nielsen (“Elliot and the Pixie Plot”):  Through a great deal of schmoozing on my part, I got hold of a highly coveted ARC for our own R.L. LaFevers’ forthcoming novel, GRAVE MERCY (Book 1 of the His Fair Assassin trilogy). It’s the story of Ismae who learns she possesses some dangerous gifts, and along with them a destiny as a handmaiden of death.  I absolutely cannot put it down, nor can I wait until April 2012 when this is released and the rest of the world gets to share in this amazing story.  The picture shown here is an ARC - the final cover will be available soon!

Okay readers - now it's your turn.  What are you reading?
