so everyone was pretty pumped to go to Philly for the Kent vs Temple game. We were supposed to board the busses around 3:30pm, get to Philly by around 11, then leave Philly to come home midnight sunday to be home around 7am, in time for the people from concert band to get some sleep so they could perform later on sunday.
This is not what happened.
So first of all the busses ended up being 2 hours late because of a bad accident on the freeway. Thats ok. Well the busses pull in.. they look like shit-especially bus 2. Bus 2 had circular headlights and looked pretty retro--in an uncool way. I hopped on bus 1, only to get off because there werent enough seats..though i signed up for that bus. So i found a seat on bus 2. We pull out of MSP and the bus started making odd noises and was rough.. i blirted out "does this driver know what he's doing?" jess replies "of course he does, hes a bus driver"... it turned out our bus was so old it was a stick shift.
So we're crusing along on the highway and pull off at our first stop..turned out the busses were going the wrong way and we had to turn around. We did. we stopped the second time, meanwhile having some fun with the ppl sitting around me. got our dinner, and started going on our way again. After the third stop (it was around 12-1am), we pull off the side of the road. we at first thought we forgot someone. not the case. right away, a scary looking man with a santa clause type beard and an orange coat came running by our bus and a couple trucks with flashling lights came as well. turns out our bus's headlights would not work and there was no electricity on the bus either. we sat there on the side of the road for a good hour. so after that, we got escorted to the next exit. the guys had to stay behind at the truck stop and the girls were driven to the hotel, 2 hrs away, then they were to come back and get the guys. i felt horribe... i would of definitly stayed as well.
we got to the hotel at 4:30am. the guys didnt get there till 8:30am. we got about 4 hours of sleep, and the guys got even less and had to sleep either outside or on the broken bus.
we had to get shuttled to the stadium, and the busses had to go back and get the guys, who had time to shower and such at the hotel. they ended up coming after the game started.
the one lucky part of the trip: Kent beat Temple, w00t
afterwords, after changing, we waited around for another hour because my bus was supposedly fixed. we were bussed to the historic district of philly and we had a blast--me and my friends took a horse drawn carrage ride and got a tour of all the important buildings. then we explored south street, including the now famous to the band "condom kingdom". we ate dinner then went back to the meeting spot..the busses were supposed to be there at 10:45
11 passes, then 12. still no busses. Mr Curfman kept calling the bus drivers...they never answered their phones. finally one bus shows up, the one with the no headlights. the headlights were not fixed, they had taped cheap taplights above the real headlights which was both absurd and hilarious at the same time. the other bus was broken down. so we were stranded at that street corner in philly. the 2 vans we had went to where the broken down bus 1 was and got all the luggage and brought it back to us. the wind ensamble ppl then left on the van since they had a concert today.
we lay around outside on chesnut street in philly from approx 10:30-3am waiting for instruction. finally, we were transported via taxis to a church (my first time in a taxi..what an interesting experience) and we spent around 3 hours sleeping in the auditorium of the church..not knowing how and when we were going to get home.
we were woken up around 7am and were told the busses were on the way. they finally arrived around 8 and all i saw were those circular headlights of the retro bus..i thought the worst--you gotta be kidding me, the same busses are driving us home??! actually they were from a different company..this company took care of the busses and were actually knowing what they were doing unlike the first bus drivers. we finally made it back to kent at 5:30 this afternoon. The concert band concert had to get rescheduled since a lot of concert band was stranded with us in philly.
who would of thought any of this would happen? no one. however, Mr Curfman did an amazing job despite everything, from finding a place for us to stay that wasnt the streets of philly and getting us busses back to school so quickly. if it werent for the awesome people and band director i was with, who knows what would of happened. this trip also was an awesome bonding experience and i got to meet several new people which was cool :)
it was a very eventful weekend. and now im exhausted.
