dragonfly_lily who asked for Harry and Draco getting a new puppy, a Boston terrier. Information on the breed was culled from
this website.
Summary: Draco and Harry argue about what kind of dog to get, and then argue over what to name it.
"Let's get one of these."
"Are you mad, Potter?" Draco cried. "We are getting a dog, not a horse."
Harry gazed one last time at the picture of a regal Irish wolfhound and sighed before turning the page. He spotted a black Lab and opened his mouth to comment when Draco beat him to it.
"No big dogs!"
Harry scowled. "Fine. What do you suggest then?"
"Something small, I should think," Draco replied tartly, taking the book of dog breeds from Harry's hands. "I would like a dog I can take for a walk, not one that will take me for a walk." He flipped some pages until he reached the section on small breeds.
"No poodles," Harry warned him.
Draco huffed but otherwise held his tongue. Instead, he located a picture of a suitable dog and showed Harry. "How about a Bichon Frise?"
"A bitching what?"
"It's a Bichon Frise," Draco said slowly, enunciating carefully.
Harry shook his head. "It looks like Aunt Petunia's feather duster," he commented.
Draco heaved a sigh and continued to leaf through the book.
"How about that one?" Harry pointed.
"A bulldog?"
"We need something fierce to protect our home."
"Potter, that dog looks like it's been chasing parked cars," Draco commented wryly.
"I think it's cute...in an ugly sort of way," Harry disagreed. "Plus, it has a short coat."
"I fancy terriers," Draco stated, his jaw set stubbornly.
Harry scowled and snatched the book back, finding the section on terriers. He flipped the pages quickly, then paused and went back one. "Ah ha!" he crowed.
"What is it?" Draco asked, half afraid of the answer.
"A compromise," Harry replied smugly. "Draco Malfoy-Potter, meet the Boston terrier!"
Draco took the book from his husband and gazed at the photos of Boston terriers. "They're cute...in an ugly sort of way," he admitted. He scanned the information on the breed and read some tidbits aloud: "It says here they're not actually terriers and were originally descended from English bulldogs...gentle, intelligent and lively...do well indoors...moderate shedders..."
"I think a Boston terrier would be perfect," enthused Harry.
Draco took one look at his husband's excited expression and caved. "Very well," he sighed.

"What are we going to name him?" Harry asked, smiling at the antics of their ten-week old Boston terrier. The puppy was alternating between playing with the toys Harry and Draco had bought him and bounding over to gnaw on their feet. "And we're not naming him after a star or a constellation, so you can forget about Alpha Centauri One, or whatever you were thinking," Harry added.
"For your information, I was thinking of Orion," sniffed Draco.
"Well, you can just unthink it," Harry warned him.
They argued back and forth while watching their new black and white bundle of energy romp about the living room. Harry leaned back on the sofa and scuffed one foot forward, startling the puppy.
"Roof roof!" he barked, bristling at Harry's foot.
"How about Rufus?" Draco suggested tiredly.
"Rufus," Harry repeated thoughtfully. "I like it," he said, sitting up straight. "It's a good, strong name. What do you think, Rufus?"
The pup cocked his head at him and woofed his agreement. "Roof roof!"
