A Suite InconvenienceSummary: Hermione gets an opportunity to visit with Felecia.
Hermione arrived at the office early on Monday morning, eager to get busy. She and Helena had a report to work on in regards to the tracking spell they had developed, which had allowed the Aurors working on the Worthington case to track the man all the way to Spain. She was also looking forward to visiting with Felecia Franklin at St Mungo's later that day. Hermione reached her office and flicked on the lights, pausing to set down her handbag and her lunch before watering the plants. She finally settled behind her desk and opened her notes on the tracking spell. Hermione was so absorbed in her reading that she didn't realize Helena had entered their shared office until the other woman greeted her with a breezy hello.
Hermione passed over some of the notes, requested different sections from Helena, and the two women worked in companionable silence for most of the morning. Occasionally, they engaged in small talk, but for the most part, they concentrated on their report. Shortly before lunch, Hermione left the office to obtain more parchment. When she reached the supply room, she realized she'd left her wand at her desk. Stifling a sigh of irritation, she pulled a box of parchment from the shelf and began lugging it back down the corridor.
Dalton came around the corner, heading in Hermione's direction, and as soon as he saw her, he rushed forward to take the box of parchment from her, exclaiming, "You shouldn't be carrying that! Let me help you."
Hermione surrendered the box with a puzzled frown. "I thank you for your assistance, Dalton, but I'm not an invalid, you know."
"Of course, you're not," he said in a placating tone. "Where do you need this?"
Hermione directed the Auror to her office and thanked him once more. Before he left, Dalton turned and admonished her to let him know if she needed any other heavy lifting done.
When he had gone, Helena looked at her suspiciously and asked, "What was that all about?"
Hermione shrugged her shoulders. "Who knows?" she sighed. She worked for another half hour, then she and Helena took a break for lunch. The other woman left the building, but Hermione took her lunch to the break room to eat. She found herself missing Harry, as he often ate with her, and she wondered how he and Malfoy were getting along in Spain.
After lunch, Hermione and Helena completed their report, making note that the spell had already been used successfully and promising further information as they received additional feedback. Hermione gathered her things and delivered the report to her supervisor, then traveled by Floo to St Mungo's. There, she checked in and was shown to Felecia Franklin's room.
"Hello, Felecia. How are you today?" Hermione greeted. The young witch didn't move, but her eyes tracked Hermione as she moved into the room. A medi-witch sat silently in the corner, observing them quietly. Hermione perched on the edge of Felecia's bed and took the girl's hand in her own, speaking to her in low, soothing tones. Hermione wasn't sure what to discuss with a catatonic patient, so she settled for talking about the lovely weather they'd been having, and she rambled on about the tedious report she had worked on at the office.
Hermione eventually ran out of things to say, and she finished her visit by merely sitting with the girl and commenting on things she saw out the window. As she stood to leave, Hermione patted Felecia's hand, and she swore she felt an almost imperceptible answering squeeze before releasing the girl's fingers.
Hermione and the medi-witch stepped out into the hallway, and Hermione told the woman she had felt Felecia gently squeeze her hand.
"That is good news, to be sure," beamed the medi-witch. "The poor dear definitely responds to you. Normally, her eyes stare straight ahead, but she actually watched you as you entered and left her room. This is very encouraging, and I thank you for taking the time to visit Miss Franklin."
"I am pleased to help in any way I can," Hermione assured her. As she left St Mungo's and headed home, Hermione wondered if she dared ring Harry's mobile to ask how his day had gone.
