I stared at Cal for a long moment. He knew I didn't like it when he traveled by ripping a gate in the fabric of reality. It's not that I didn't trust his ability; he'd proven how capable he was at that uniquely Auphe mode of transport. I didn't like it because it was a stark reminder that he was not fully human.
When he'd been younger, traveling via gates had ramped up his Auphe genes, leaving him teetering on the edge of being out of control while unraveling all the work I'd done convincing him he wasn't a monster.
