I awoke from an odd dream in which I was leaving Promise to join Cal on a job. She handed me a mummified kitten. "Take this with you," she said, concern in her violet eyes. In dreams it made sense that this was the offspring of Spartacus and Salome. In reality mummified cats could not reproduce.
Spartacus woke me when he bolted from the nest he'd made of my hair, taking several strands with him. I drew the knife from beneath my pillow and rose to my feet.
"Spartacus! You're alive. You didn't kill Nik, did you?"
Cal was home.
