Harry withdrew a special ornament from its protective layer of tissue paper. It was a plush heart decorated with red sequins, which the children at the orphanage had made.
"I remember that one, Dad," said Carolyn, smiling brightly.
"Would you like to hang it on the tree?" Harry asked her.
Carolyn took it from him. "I'll put it next to these other red Christmas ornaments."
From the corner of his eye, Harry saw Draco twitch. He took trimming the tree very seriously, claiming that the decorations and ornaments needed to balance. The children, however, hung baubles in a haphazard fashion, uncaring of balance. Harry thought it was brilliant; Draco managed to tolerate it.
"Why don't we take a break from decorating for now?" suggested Harry. "We can have some hot chocolate and those gingerbread biscuits your Aunt Ginny made."
"Biscuits!" cried Jasmin. She did a little twirl, her blue and white tutu flaring around her.
Harry turned to his husband. "Would you like to help me in the kitchen, or would you prefer to stay here and have a nervous breakdown?"
"Just for that, you can prepare our treats all by yourself," said Draco. "The children and I will wait here in the front parlor and admire our stockings."
Harry's eyes were drawn to the mantel, where the family's stockings were hanging. There were seven in total: one each for himself and Draco, their three children, and the dog and the cat.
"I'll help, Dad."
"Thank you, Carolyn," said Harry, pulling a face at Draco when he made a production of dropping onto the sofa and putting his feet up.
"Do you want me to help too, Dad?" asked Ben.
"No, you stay in here and keep your father out of trouble," Harry replied. Ben giggled while Draco made a shooing motion at Harry.
Harry smirked and escorted his daughter to the kitchen. Together, they prepared mugs of hot chocolate and arranged the biscuits on a tray. Carolyn led the way back to the family room; Harry trailed behind her while levitating the tray.
"Treats!" Jasmin exclaimed, rushing forward.
"Careful, sweetie," said Harry. "Sit down and let Daddy help you."
Jasmin clambered onto the sofa and sat on Draco's lap, squashing the back of her tulle tutu. Harry knew it would bounce back when she stood up again; he'd spelled it himself to do so.
Once everyone was settled on the sofa with a drink in one hand and a biscuit in the other, Harry felt his heart swell with contentment. "Isn't this nice?"
"Yummy," said Jasmin, crumbs tumbling from her lips.
Draco twitched again but let it go.
"The tree is pretty, isn't it, Dad?" mused Carolyn. She dunked a biscuit in her hot chocolate and took a bite.
"It's almost as pretty as the Pink Tree in your father's shop."
Draco's left eye twitched, and he glared at Harry over the children's heads.
Harry turned back to admiring the decorated Scotch pine in front of them. Draco had managed to relegate the Rainbow Tree to the play room on the upper floor, but he hadn't been able to escape the horror of the Pink Tree.
Pleased with his victory, Harry took stock of the ornaments on the pine. There was a mix of handmade ornaments, along with glass baubles. Harry frowned when he didn't see the glass ball he considered his.
"Where is my Gryffindor ornament?" he asked. "The red one with gold glitter on it?"
"Dad told me to bin it," said Ben.
"Draco Potter-Malfoy!"
