Summary: A friends' holiday leads to something more.

Harry stood on the expanse of sandy beach and gazed out over the sea. He took a deep breath, let it out, and grinned. "Isn't this fantastic?"

Beside him, Draco Malfoy nodded in agreement. "It's tremendous."

As teammates for the Ballycastle Bats, Harry and Malfoy had taken advantage of the summer off-season to go on holiday on Antigua. Neither of them was seeing anyone at the time, and they'd agreed on a friends' holiday.

Harry marveled that he and Malfoy were even friends. Things were tense when Malfoy first joined the team, but he had been signed on as a Chaser. He was brilliant at the position, and he could always step in as Seeker if Harry wasn't able to play. They gradually warmed to one another until their childhood rivalry was a distant memory. They often roomed together when the team was traveling, and Harry now counted Malfoy among his best mates.

"Come on," urged Harry. "Let's set up our beach blanket and umbrella."

Harry arranged a surprise for Malfoy that evening. He left his friend snoozing in the bungalow and went to their private section of the beach to get everything ready. He heard the shower running in Malfoy's en suite when he returned. Harry took a seat at the small table in the kitchen area and adopted an air of nonchalance.

Malfoy joined him, and they shared a platter of fresh, sliced fruit that Harry had ordered from the staff.

"Let's go out to the beach before it gets too dark," Harry suggested when they'd finished their lite repast.

Malfoy agreed and went to change to swim trunks. He returned a few minutes later, looking carefree and fit. Harry reined in his wayward thoughts; they were friends, nothing more. He led the way out of the bungalow, trying to block Malfoy's view for as long as possible. Harry stepped aside, made a sweeping gesture with his arm, and said, "Behold!"

Malfoy's expression was almost comical as he got his first glimpse of the 'Happy Birthday' Harry had written in the sand. Next to it was a hastily wrapped gift.

"What is this?" asked Malfoy, clearly bewildered. "My birthday was weeks ago!"

"Yes, but I was in Australia with Hermione and Ron and wasn't able to help you celebrate."

"I, well, thank you," Malfoy said with a smile. He scooped up the gift and raised a brow. "May I?"

Harry nodded, and Malfoy tore the wrapping from the gift. He laughed when he saw that Harry had given him a small snow globe with Quidditch figures zipping to and fro inside of it.

"It plays music, too," said Harry. "Something classical and highbrow. There's a winding mechanism in the base, see?"

"Thank you, Potter," said Malfoy. "It's delightful."

Harry was glad his answering flush wasn't noticeable in the waning daylight. "How about a campfire?" he asked to change the subject. Without waiting for a response, Harry lit a pile of firewood with a wave of his hand. He and Malfoy sat beside it, gazing into the dancing flames and making small talk.

Malfoy shivered and scooted closer. Harry cleared his throat. "There's, erm, there's a birthday cake in the fridge, if you'd like to go inside," he said.

"Later, perhaps," Malfoy murmured. "I'm enjoying myself right here."

They settled into companionable silence. Harry would have found it relaxing, were it not for the fact that Malfoy pressed even closer until they were all but snuggling by the fire. He tried to make light of it. "We, ah, we should probably go inside for that cake before I embarrass myself."

Malfoy sighed. "Potter...Harry," he said, "I'm weary of pretending to be just friends. I want more, and I hope you do, as well. If not, I'll leave tonight and we shall never speak of it again."

Harry's jaw dropped, and his mind froze. He was utterly speechless. He felt Malfoy...Draco, withdraw. Harry reached out to snag his arm.

"Wait. Don't go. You surprised me, is all," Harry blurted. "I'm the Gryffindor; I'm the one who's meant to be the brave one, but I was too scared to tell you how I feel about you. I didn't want to ruin what we had--our friendship."

Draco smiled at him, teeth gleaming in the firelight. "Let's go inside," he suggested. "We can save the cake for later."

Harry grinned back at him. "Let's," he agreed. He liked the idea of there being a later.
