hp_coffeehouse Prompt No. 42 - ___: The answer to everything!
Summary: Draco is outmaneuvered by the twin terrors.
The morning edition of the Daily Prophet featured a lurid headline about an Auror love triangle, just as Malfoy had predicted. Harry decided he needed to drown his sorrows in coffee. He marched into Dragon Brew an hour later, his glare daring anyone to test his temper. Malfoy was manning the counter and seemed to be holding it together, but Harry was convinced he saw Malfoy's lips twitch. He thumped his to-go cup on the counter.
"I need coffee, and I need it now," he muttered.
"Dragon Brew coffee: the answer to everything!" Malfoy chirped, taking the cup. "One Long Black, coming up."
Harry heard the bell over the door jangle behind him. Please, please, please not Ethel and Mabel, he silently entreated.
Malfoy returned and handed Harry his cup. "Miss Ethel, Miss Mabel, how are you ladies this morning?" he asked cheerfully.
Harry wished there was a spell to create a hole in the floor where he could disappear.
"For shame!" tutted Ethel.
Harry steeled himself for a lengthy scolding.
"If you would cease giving Auror Potter the cut direct, he wouldn't need to cast his attention elsewhere."
Malfoy's mouth fell open. "Sorry?"
Harry barely refrained from laughing. "You have wounded me deeply, Malfoy," he said, voice as grave as he could manage.
Mabel tsked and shook her head, while Malfoy floundered for a rejoinder.
"I am willing to overlook your transgression, should you agree to have dinner with me this evening," said Harry, reckoning he may as well stir while the cauldron was hot.
"That would be splendid," Ethel cut in, beaming from ear to ear. "Mr Malfoy would be delighted to join you. Isn't that correct, young man?"
"Er, um, yes?"
"Wonderful!" Harry exclaimed. "I shall drop by to collect you promptly at seven."
"I am positively giddy with joy, Potter."
Harry recognized sarcasm when he heard it, but he wasn't going to look a gift unicorn in the mouth. "Fantastic," he said. "I'll see you then. Ladies," he added, tipping his head to Ethel and Mabel. They tittered as he sauntered past them. Harry had the good sense to wait until the door closed behind him before he whooped in glee.
