hp_coffeehouse Prompt No. 37 - coffee quarantine
Summary: Harry comes back from the dead (again!) and becomes a daddy.
Harry got caught up in the middle of a difficult case, culminating with his entire team being exposed to some dangerous, illegal potion ingredients. All of them, Harry included, had to remain sequestered for two days to be sure they suffered no ill effects. As soon as Harry was released from quarantine, he went to Dragon Brew.
"Auror Potter!" cried Lynsey. "We thought you were dead!"
Harry rocked back on his heels as he beheld her concerned face. He was distracted from Lynsey, however, when Malfoy dashed out of the kitchen. Malfoy slowed to a more even pace as he strolled up to the counter. Lynsey wisely surrendered her position and retreated to the kitchen.
"Auror, how nice of you to grace my lowly shop with your presence again."
Malfoy sounded cool, and Harry wasn't having it. He leaned in, grabbed Malfoy by his I ♥ Harry Potter apron, and hauled him into a hot, frantic kiss. Harry didn't release the barista until he heard an approving cheer from one of the other patrons in the coffee shop.
Harry felt a giddy grin split his face, but he had no regrets. "I missed you," he murmured. "Were you lonely without me?"
"No," Malfoy replied. "I got myself a kitten."
Harry blinked. "You're having me on."
"I'm quite serious," said Malfoy. "Lovegood foisted him off on me. You may wish to avoid her for a week or two until she manages to find homes for his littermates."
The thought of Malfoy with a kitten secretly delighted Harry. "Don't tell me," he said. "The kitten is black, and you named him Coffee."
"On the contrary, he's a mongrel tabby, and I named him Bean."
Harry laughed. "Bean is as good as Coffee, I reckon. Speaking of coffee, I am dying for a Long Black. I've spent the past two days in quarantine, and I missed your coffee."
"Quarantine?" asked Malfoy, turning to get Harry's drink. "Have you been visiting rent boys?"
"Of course not!" snapped Harry. "I was exposed to a noxious potion ingredient during an arrest."
"What did you get arrested for, if not for visiting rent boys?" Malfoy teased as he handed Harry the Long Black.
"Very funny," grumbled Harry. He took a sip of his coffee and sighed in pleasure. "Ah, that hits the spot." Harry reached into his pocket for money, but Malfoy stayed his hand.
"This one's on the house, Auror Potter," he said. "We appreciate all you do to keep us safe. By the way, the next time you're in quarantine, send me your Patonus. I'll make sure you have enough coffee."
"Coffee would have made quarantine more bearable," Harry remarked. He heard the bell over the door jingle and moved aside to allow the couple who entered to step up and order.
"Auror Potter!" exclaimed the young man. "We thought you were dead!"
Harry's brow furrowed. "Why does everyone think I died?"
"It was in the Prophet," the young lady replied. "You and your entire team were killed in an explosion, and the Ministry has been trying to keep it quiet."
As Harry considered how best to address the rumor, Malfoy spoke up on his behalf.
"You shouldn't believe everything you read in that rag," he sniffed. "Besides, Auror Potter has an immunity to death. Now, what may I get for you?"
Harry wandered over to the display of merchandise while he waited to flirt with the barista some more. The door opened again, and Luna came in.
"Hello, Harry. I thought you were dead. I'm glad to see that's not the case. I have a kitten for you."
Harry's mind raced as he tried to keep up. He settled for responding to Luna's last statement. "I'd love a kitten, Luna, but my schedule isn't conducive to caring for one. I never know when I may be on a case for days at a time."
"That's okay," chirped Luna. "Draco can take care of your kitten for you. Isn't that right, Draco?"
Malfoy blanched. "Er..."
"You already have a key to Harry's, so it will be easy," Luna plowed on.
"What?"
"Sorry?"
"I've just come to collect the donations in the jar, Draco. Thank you again for allowing me to place it on your counter. Harry, do you have anything to add?"
Wordlessly, Harry reached into his pocket and handed Luna several Galleons.
She giggled. "I meant to the conversation, but thank you for the donation. I'll drop your kitten off later this evening. Bye now!"
Harry could only stare after her in bemused silence when she exited as rapidly as she'd entered. He'd come in for coffee and kisses and somehow ended up a cat daddy. Behind him, Malfoy snickered.
"You can name your kitten Coffee if you want," he said. "And, I reckon you ought to give me a key to your place so I can feed it the next time you die."
