Summary: Draco treats Harry to a Halloween devoid of tricks.
Harry stepped out of the house and into the garden, a piping cup of tea in hand. Ground fog swirled in lazy patterns at the bottom of the garden, mimicking the steam that rose from the cup. Harry seated himself on a wooden bench and took a sip of tea. He was determined to enjoy this moment. It was peaceful in the garden--quiet and relaxing. Later this evening, he knew that Draco would want to go to the Halloween party hosted by Blaise and Pansy.
Harry wasn't in a partying mood; he never was on this date. His parents had been murdered on Halloween, which left Harry in no frame of mind for hedonistic revelry. Harry heard the door open and close, followed by Draco's measured footsteps as he approached.
Draco joined Harry on the bench with his own cup of tea in hand. "It's quiet out here," he commented.
"That's why I enjoy it," Harry responded. He sipped his cooling tea, and they sat in thoughtful silence for several moments.
"It's going to be a decent day for once," said Draco. "The sun will be out most of the day. We should do something."
Harry refrained from heaving a sigh and asked instead, "What did you have in mind?" No doubt, Draco would want to go shopping in Soho or visit a string of museums.
"What would you do, if I asked you to plan your perfect day-date?"
Surprised, Harry turned to look at Draco. "Well, I've been wanting to visit an apple orchard and pick my own apples. After that, maybe take tea in some quaint, small-town coffee house and see if there's an outdoor market."
"Let's do that, then."
"Are you sure?" asked Harry. "That's not something you're normally interested in. I usually just invite myself along when Hermione and Ron take their children."
Draco rested a hand on Harry's leg, above his knee. "Harry, I know this day is difficult for you. That's why I want to do something that will create some happy memories. Picking apples sounds like...fun."
"No, it doesn't, you tosser," Harry said with a smile.
"Not my idea of fun, precisely," Draco admitted, "but I can supervise while you pick apples. How does that sound?"
Harry's smile broadened. "It sounds fantastic."
"This one?"
"No, the one above it, to the left."
Harry stretched as far as he dared on the stepladder and grasped the large, red apple. "This one?"
"Yes! That one is perfect," said Draco.
Harry plucked it from the branch and tossed it to Draco, who set it carefully in their basket. "They don't have to be perfect, you know," he said. "I plan to make apple sauce with them."
"I want at least one to eat as is," said Draco. "This one will suffice."
"Good, then I'm just going to pick some others to fill our bushel basket," said Harry. He put words to action, stretching to pick several more apples that were within his reach. Once they had a full bushel, he jumped nimbly down from the ladder, leaving it for the next person to use.
They paid for their apples, and Harry secured them in the boot of his car. He and Draco then bought cups of steaming apple cider to drink. They sat on a low stone wall that separated a flowering garden from the orchard to enjoy their treat. When the cider was gone, they binned the cups and returned to the car.
"Where to now?" asked Draco.
"Let's head south," said Harry. "I saw a sign for a small town, and I'm certain we can find somewhere for tea and nibbles."
They found the village, and as an added bonus, it featured an open-air market. Harry happily waded in, and Draco followed him indulgently. They bought some late-season produce, as well as a dozen cider donuts and some iced biscuits.
After storing their latest purchases in the boot, a happily weary Harry led Draco to a cozy tea room on the corner of a cobblestone street. They sat at a small table near the windows.
"This is nice," said Harry, looking around the space.
"And mercifully devoid of pink," drawled Draco.
"Hush," Harry scolded as a young girl bustled up to take their order. He requested a pumpkin spice flavored tea, while Draco ordered an elegant Darjeeling. Once they were contentedly sipping tea, Harry set his cup down and smiled across the table.
"Thank you, Draco."
"Don't thank me," said Draco. "You're buying."
"I meant for doing this," said Harry, gesturing with one hand. "For spending the day humoring me like this. It was just what I needed."
"I've enjoyed it, too, Harry," said Draco. "Picking apples was surprisingly fun."
"You didn't pick any apples."
"No, but I ogled your arse while you did."
Harry barked out a laugh. "Git," he said fondly. He drained his cup and set it on the saucer. "I reckon we should get going. We still need to get ready for the party tonight."
"Harry, we don't have to go to that," said Draco. "I know going to a party is the last thing you want to do tonight."
Harry reached across the table and covered Draco's hand with his own. "It's okay," he said. "Truly. This has been a fantastic day, and you were right when you said I need to create some happy memories on Halloween."
"Somehow, I doubt that attending a party with my friends is your idea of creating happy memories," Draco pointed out.
"Maybe not, but I am looking forward to seeing you in that sexy costume you bought."
Draco chuckled. "You are incorrigible," he said as he stood up. "By the way, what will you be wearing this evening?"
"I thought I'd go as a sexy Auror," Harry replied.
Draco quirked a single brow. "Isn't that your every day attire?"
"Yeah, but I know how much it turns you on."
"Mm, yes, there is that," said Draco. "We may end up staying home tonight, after all."
