Summary: Harry's minions can't save him from his own folly.
Draco put the last jar of homemade plum jelly in the cupboard. He and Harry had bought a peck of plums from a neighbor, and Draco had busied himself making jelly. He was looking forward to enjoying plum jelly on toast points in the weeks to come. Draco peered out of the window, hoping for a glimpse of Harry. His boyfriend had gone out to tend to the fountain in the garden. Now that Autumn was here, it was time to shut it off and cover it before winter arrived. Knowing Harry, however, he was probably playing with the cats.
Draco washed his hands at the sink, dried with a tea towel, then he opened the door and stepped into the garden. One of the tabbies dashed over to wind around Draco's ankles. It was Louann, a favorite of Harry's. Draco drew in a deep breath of the brisk, Autumn air. He loved the smell of the season, the crisp leaves, the subtle scent of smoke in the air, and the sweeter fragrance of late-blooming flowers.
Draco turned his head from left to right, but there was no sign of Harry. That could mean only one thing: Harry had adopted his Animagus cat form and was quite likely sunning himself on a bench. Draco began meandering through the garden, searching for a particular black cat among half a dozen black cats. He smiled when he found a large black cat reclining in a patch of sun, only to sigh when he realized it was William. Draco had insisted on putting a collar on William after he mistook the surly tom for Harry one too many times.
Draco crossed his arms against the slight chill in the air. "Harry?" he called.
A small gray cat bounded over and stood on her hind legs, hooking her claws in Draco's trousers.
"No, Becky," he scolded, giving her paws a tap.
She dropped to all fours and meowed at Draco.
"Harry, get over here and save me from your minions!"
Soft laughter from the right caused Draco to turn his head. He saw Harry approaching him, with his specs in his hand.
"Why aren't you wearing your glasses?" asked Draco.
Harry looked embarrassed. "I tripped over Ernie, and my glasses slipped off. I accidentally stepped on them and broke them."
Draco's eyebrows rose slowly. "You tripped. Over Ernie. The only ginger cat out here. Are you certain you were wearing your glasses at the time?"
"Yes, you plonker, I was wearing my glasses," Harry grumbled. "I wasn't watching where I was walking, because I was admiring how the leaves on the trees are turning color."
Draco's lips twitched, and he gave into laughter. He drew his wand and waved it, fixing Harry's specs with a simple spell. "Perhaps you should carry your wand out here," he suggested.
"I don't need my wand," said Harry, putting his glasses back on. "My minions will protect me."
"When they aren't trying to trip you up and kill you, do you mean?"
"That's ridiculous," Harry snorted. He folded his legs and sat on the ground. Immediately, he was swarmed by a mob of moggies. Even William deigned to leave his sunny perch and wade into the fray. Harry needed more hands, as he tried to pet and pat each cat in equal measure.
Draco chuckled again at the sight of his boyfriend surrounded by cats. He was surprised that the rumble of their combined purrs didn't touch off a minor earthquake.
"Harry, quit playing with your pussies, and come inside."
Harry groaned at Draco's awful pun. His expression turned sly. "If I come inside, does that mean I get to come inside?"
Draco sighed and rolled his eyes. "That was even worse than the pussy pun," he said. "However, the answer is yes." With that, he pivoted on one heel and headed back to the house.
"Draco, wait for me!"
Draco neither slowed nor turned, but he snickered to himself as he imagined Harry trying to disentangle himself from a dozen clinging felines to chase after him. Draco opened the door to the kitchen, closed it, and locked it behind him. That would make things more challenging for Harry, and it would definitely teach him not to leave his wand in the house.
