Summary: As Harry ponders his future, Luna gives sage advice.
"What are you doing out here alone, Harry?" asked Luna. "You should be in the Great Hall, celebrating with everyone else."
Harry mustered a smile for his odd friend as she folded her legs and sat beside him at the edge of the Black Lake. He picked up a stone and skimmed it across the surface of the water. "The others all seem to know what they want to do once we leave Hogwarts," he sighed.
"And you don't?" Luna pressed.
The corners of Harry's mouth drew down in a frown. "I thought I did," he admitted slowly. "Now, I'm not so certain." He had been certain, once upon a time: join the Aurors, marry the girl, and raise a family. But, that was before a smirking Slytherin had sauntered onto the scene.
Luna shrugged and tossed a pebble into the water. "Go where your heart takes you," she said.
Harry turned his head to look at her sharply. Had Luna guessed his secret? "What does my heart have to do with it?" he asked her.
Luna smiled at him. "You should be with the one you love."
Harry was starting to sweat. "What makes you think I'm in love with someone?"
"You have all the symptoms, Harry," Luna giggled. "Don't worry," she added, patting his hand. "Love is like a virus. It can happen to anybody at any time. Still, it's precious, and not to be treated lightly. Who knows when or if you'll ever love another?"
Luna stood up and brushed at the back of her skirt. "I need to go back," she said. "Neville is waiting for me." With a wave, she skipped away, hair and skirts swishing with joyful abandon.
Harry took a moment to ponder what Luna had said. Everyone expected him to continue being their hero. Only one person wanted him to simply be Harry. Two, if he counted Luna.
Go where your heart takes you, she'd insisted.
Harry's heart was urging him to take Draco up on his offer to accompany him around the world, cataloging and collecting rare potions ingredients. It sounded like fun, but Harry had waffled over the decision as he thought of how many people would be disappointed in him. Harry's jaw firmed. He was tired of living his life for everyone else; it was time to do something for himself.
Harry stood up and dusted off his jeans. He headed back to the castle, steps and heart light as he went in search of Draco.
