Summary: All of Harry and Draco's careful preparations go for naught.
Draco was putting the finishing touches on the chocolate pudding when Harry sidled past him to take the roast ducks out of the oven. Tonight, they were hosting a Christmas dinner for Draco's parents and an entire herd of Weasleys.
Harry conveyed the ducks to the stove top and turned the oven off. He smiled at Draco and said, "Isn't it nice that we can bring in the holiday together with our families?"
"Ask me that later, once everyone has gone home," said Draco, a worried frown creasing his brow. He exited the kitchen, levitating dishware behind him. Draco swept into the dining room and began setting the table with swishes of his wand.
Rufus, their Boston terrier, trotted in and sat at Draco's feet. He was wearing a festive red bow for the occasion. "You need to behave yourself tonight," Draco admonished him.
"Roof!" Rufus replied. He scampered out of the dining room, no doubt returning to the rawhide chew that Harry had provided him with earlier.
By the time the first guests arrived the table was set, with the roast ducks taking pride of place in the center. Ron and Hermione stepped from the Floo, followed shortly by Arthur and Molly. Dean and Ginny arrived next, and George and Angelina came a few minutes later.
Harry and Draco ushered everyone into the living room and began pouring drinks and passing appetizers. The Floo in the front parlor activated again, and they heard Lucius and Narcissa's voices. The elder Malfoys joined the others in the living room. Lucius was brushing at his coat, and Narcissa stilled his hand with her own. She smiled at Draco.
"Your father brought his new familiar to show you," she said. "It's a lovely Siamese cat."
"Cat?!" Harry and Draco cried at the same time.
Immediately, a frenzy of barking erupted from somewhere else in the house, followed by an enraged feline yowl. Everyone gasped at the sound of claws scrabbling across flooring, then cringed as they heard clatters, bangs and the noise of breaking glass.
Draco and Harry rushed into the dining room, followed by their guests. It was chaos. Lucius' cat had run the length of the table, spilling drinks, knocking over dishes and trampling Draco's perfect pudding. The cat was currently ensconced on top of the china cupboard, gnawing on a purloined duck wing, while Rufus barked and danced around on the floor below.
"My pudding!" cried Draco.
"My duck!" exclaimed Harry.
"My grandmother's crystal!" shrieked Narcissa.
"My mum's fine china!" wailed Molly.
"My cat!" bellowed Lucius.
Hermione cleared her throat. "I'll, erm, I'll just ring for take-out, shall I?"
