The first weekend of June brings a new JMDC.
This month, the prompt is animal. You may use it any way you wish: actual animal, reference to an animal, the word 'animal', etc. Feel free to write/draw any fandom, pairing, threesome, gen fic, original fic, or what have you. Combine it with other prompts, if you like. Please post your entry in your own journal (unlocked!) or a community of your choice, and leave me a link in the comments below. You have until Sunday, June 30, at 10:00pm CST to submit an entry. At that time, I'll post links to the entries and draw a name from among the participants to receive a drabble from me. Below is my entry for June:

Summary: Draco and Harry visit the shelter to adopt a cat.
Draco stayed close to Harry as they opened the doors and entered the shelter. He disliked dealing with Muggles, and Harry had insisted Draco leave his wand at home. Draco was relying on Harry to protect him.
They were here to adopt a cat. Draco had initiated the discussion about getting a pet. From there, it had turned into an argument. Harry wanted a dog, while Draco wanted a cat. Draco had employed Slytherin tactics to get his way, as in, he'd sucked Harry off. Harry, however, hadn't surrendered without demanding a concession. He insisted they get a homeless cat from a shelter. Draco was aghast at the thought, as all of his dreams of a beautiful Persian or an elegant Abyssinian had gone by the wayside.
"May I help you?"
The question startled Draco out of his grumpy musings. A matronly woman had approached them and was smiling benignly.
"We're here to adopt a cat," said Harry.
"Wonderful!" the woman exclaimed. "Did you have something specific in mind?"
Draco opened his mouth to ask if they had any suitable cats, but Harry chose that moment to lean back and step on Draco's foot. Draco closed his mouth to stifle a yelp.
"Why don't you show us the cats who have been here the longest?" suggested Harry.
The woman's face immediately brightened. "Why, bless your hearts!" she cried. "Right this way." She led them to a bright room, where large cages lined the floor.
Draco frowned. "You keep the poor things in cages?" he asked.
"They're allowed out each day for some exercise and socializing," the woman responded. She stopped in front of the only cage that housed two cats. "These fine fellows are Stan and Ollie," she said. "Their owner adopted them as kittens from this very shelter. When she passed, she asked that they go to the same home, as they're quite inseparable. Unfortunately, most people are looking for a single cat."
Draco leaned close and peered at the cats. One was solid gray, and the other was white with gray spots. There was nothing remarkable about them, but they were handsome cats. "How long have they been here?" he asked.
"Two years," said the woman. "The poor boys. Now then," she continued, leading them to another cage. "This is Snowball."
Draco smiled when he saw the beautiful cat. She was pure white, with long fur and blue eyes. "She's a beauty," he breathed. "Why wouldn't anyone want to adopt her?"
"Snowball is deaf," the woman replied. "It's a bit of a handicap, to be sure, but as long as she's kept safely indoors, it shouldn't deter anyone from giving her a home. So far, however, no one has wanted her."
Draco wanted her, but he couldn't help but glance back at poor Stan and Ollie.
"Here is Ralph," said the woman, stopping next to a third cage. "He's been here for four years. Nobody wants the homely old devil."
Draco leaned close for a better look. Ralph wasn't merely homely; he was ugly. He had one cauliflower ear, and the other was battered. His muzzle was scarred, and his coat was a muddled shade of ginger. He yawned widely, and Draco saw that Ralph was missing one front canine.
"He'll probably end up spending the rest of his life here," said the woman. "He may look like a grizzled warrior, but he's a real sweetheart. Too bad everyone seems to want a cute kitten or a pedigreed cat."
Harry shot Draco a look, but Draco ignored him. "May we have a moment to decide?" he asked.
"Oh, certainly," said the woman. "If you'd rather see some of the other cats or kittens, just let me know."
After she left them, Harry returned to Snowball's cage. "I suspect she's the one you want, yeah?" he asked.
Draco nodded slowly. "Yes, but..."
=^o^=
Draco sat on the sofa, smiling as he gently stroked Snowball's back. She might be deaf, but she had no trouble vocalizing. At the moment, she was purring up a storm on his lap. Ralph's large body was draped across Draco's lower legs, threatening to cut off his circulation. He, too, was purring, but Draco couldn't quite hear him. He could feel the vibration, however.
Harry had his favorite armchair in the recline position, and he was currently wearing Stan and Ollie. Harry winced as one of the cats kneaded his ribs.
"Draco?"
"Yeah?"
"We went to the shelter to adopt one cat. How did we end up bringing home four?"
Draco grinned. "Don't pretend you could have chosen just one," he said. "Saving people, and cats, is in your nature."
"We'll have to buy more food and baskets and toys," Harry said.
"Splendid," said Draco. "We'll shop for supplies tomorrow."
Cat Yoga June is "Adopt a Shelter Cat Month" in the US. If any of you is thinking about a pet, please consider adopting a cat (or a dog!) from a shelter. Thank you.
