Cotton Candy Bingo prompt of wooing
Summary: Draco has been ordered to seduce the Boy Who Lived.

When Rita Skeeter broke the news that Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived Twice, was bent, Draco Malfoy had been surprised and dismayed. Surprised, because he had expected Potter to marry the Weasley girl and produce dozens of ginger brats. Dismayed, because Lucius Malfoy had immediately seen the merits of the situation.

While Lucius had never forgiven Draco for confessing his own proclivities, he wasn't about to let such an opportunity fall by the wayside. Lucius had tossed the copy of the Daily Prophet, which contained the news of Potter's tendencies, at Draco and said only, "Seduce Potter."

In an effort to please his father, Draco had begun a subtle, skillful seduction of Gryffindor's Golden Boy. It hadn't been easy. Potter had resisted at first, refusing to let go of their school boy rivalry. Draco had persisted, however, and he had eventually broken through Potter's barriers. First, Draco had befriended Potter, and later he had begun wooing Potter in earnest.

Draco told himself he was only following his father's orders, but somewhere along the way, he had developed feelings for Potter. Draco had discovered that Potter was charming and witty and had a rather wicked sense of humor. He was possessed of a strong sense of honor, which Draco had originally scorned when they were young. Now, however, Draco found the trait endearing, and he took pride in the fact that people trusted Potter and relied on him.

As a result of Draco's deepening emotions for Potter, he allowed himself to be dragged along on visits to the Burrow. It had been awkward at first. The Weasleys were naturally suspicious of Draco, and he remained tense and alert in their presence. Gradually, however, the Weasleys had come to accept Potter's choice in boyfriends, and they had warmed up to Draco. He was now a welcome guest in their home, and for Draco it was a surreal experience. He had been raised in an austere household, where emotions were carefully kept in check. His upbringing had been strict and rigid and lacking in warmth. By contrast, the Weasleys were a gregarious bunch, given to sudden displays of rough affection. Draco had been subjected to hugging, bantering and pranking, and he was proud of the fact that he'd learned to hold his own. That Harry seemed proud of him as well had caused an unfamiliar tightness in the region of Draco's chest.

Draco's father also expressed pride in his son. He was pleased with Draco for wrapping Potter around his finger so thoroughly. However, Draco experienced no satisfaction at his father's hard-won praise. Instead, it left him with a rather hollow feeling in the pit of his stomach.

The time came when Draco felt compelled to confess his duplicity to Potter. He could no longer abide his own scurrilous treatment of the man he'd come to hold in such high regard. The entire story poured out of Draco over dinner at Potter's flat one evening. Once finished, Draco slumped back in his chair, filled with dread. Potter surprised him by chuckling softly.

"I suspected as much at first," said Potter.

Draco was astounded by this revelation. "Why did you allow me to befriend and seduce you, then?" he demanded.

"What makes you think I didn't befriend and seduce you?" countered Potter.

Draco's dismay vanished when he saw Potter's lips twitching as he fought not to smile. "Toss pot," he grumbled. Draco allowed his eyes to linger on Potter's face one last time before he sighed and pushed his chair back. "I'll tell father you threw me over," said Draco. "It will enable you to save face with the public and put me firmly back in the role of nasty Death Eater."

Potter cocked his head to one side. "Are you breaking up with me?" he asked quietly.

"I can't imagine you still want to see me and be seen with me after what I've just told you," said Draco. His heart was beating too fast, and something suspiciously like hope was trying to take root within him.

"Does it matter how we came to this point?" asked Potter. "The important thing is, we're together, and I enjoy spending time with you," he added. "In fact, I feel very strongly for you, and I suspect you feel the same. Am I right?"

Draco almost couldn't believe what he was hearing. He'd been ordered to seduce Potter, and he'd lost himself in the process. Now, just when he'd been willing to give it up to salvage Potter's pride and emotions, Potter was offering forgiveness and a new future based on trust. Draco didn't deserve this; he didn't deserve Harry. He opened his mouth to tell Harry that, but all that emerged was a heartfelt, "Yes."
