Summary: Prompt from
tabitha666- Draco's favourite pet dies, he's distraught and holds a funeral for it. Harry thinks Draco is adorable. Narcissa is upset that Draco's so upset and Lucius awkwardly eulogises the pet.
"Where are we going?" Harry whispered to his boyfriend.
"To the Malfoy family cemetery," Draco answered, finishing with a sniffle.
Harry was sobered by that. "Who died?" he asked, glancing at Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy, who were marching ahead of them.
Draco sniffed again and swiped at his eyes. "Alonso," he said.
Harry's brows furrowed. He didn't recognize the name. "Er, was he a...cousin, or an uncle?"
Draco turned to glare at him. "Alonso was my toad, Harry. He was my first pet, and he was very near and dear to me."
Harry fought a grin. He wished Draco was not so unhappy today, but he found it utterly adorable that his boyfriend was in tears over the loss of his pet toad.
Narcissa glanced back with a worried frown. "Draco?" she called softly. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine, mum," Draco told her, reaching for Harry's hand.
Harry gave his boyfriend's fingers a comforting squeeze.
Eventually, the small party arrived at the cemetery. They gathered around a freshly-dug hole in the ground, and Lucius somberly set a small box in the grave. Draco made a soft, distressed sound, and Narcissa immediately elbowed Harry aside to enfold her son in a matronly hug.
Lucius waited until Draco had composed himself before he cleared his throat and began the eulogy. "Alonso was a wonderful toad," he said. "He was a fine familiar, and a loving companion."
Here, Draco broke down, and this time it was Harry who leaped to comfort him.
Lucius' eyes darted nervously from his distraught son to the box in the ground to his wife. Narcissa gestured for him to go on. "Ahem. Alonso was a brave toad who was more than willing to tackle any insects that invaded the Manor."
"Oh Merlin, I can't believe he's dead!" wailed Draco.
Harry tightened his arms around his boyfriend and patted Draco's back while tears and snot soaked his shirt.
"He brought joy to all who knew him," Lucius forged on. "May he rest in peace."
"Father," Draco whined, sniffling again. "You can't leave it at that. Tell an anecdote or two."
Lucius took on the expression of a bunny in a basilisk's glare. He tugged at the collar of his robe. "Er, ah, I remember the time that Alonso escaped his cage, and we spent two days searching for him. Draco was so relieved to find the toad under his bed."
Narcissa leaned close to her husband and whispered in his ear.
"That was not amusing, Narcissa," hissed Lucius. He quailed at his wife's fierce scowl. "Yes, well, your mother has reminded me of when we first got Alonso, and I was showing you how to hold him, Draco. You stroked his head, and he, er, peed in my hand. Yes, that...that was quite funny."
Draco chuckled weakly through his tears and beamed at his father.
Lucius seemed to relax, and he scooped up a handful of dirt to sprinkle on Alonso's grave. "Until we meet again, dear, beloved Alonso, we bid you a fond farewell."
Draco burst into a fresh round of tears, but he stoically scooped up his own handful of dirt to add to Alonso's final resting place. Harry did the same, and he even conjured a small bouquet of flowers.
Draco thanked him with a sloppy kiss before using his own wand to conjure a small marker. On it, he wrote:
Here Lies Alonso, a Good Toad
